The decoder starts in diesel mode when started for the first time. The model will be limited to 25mph or less in diesel mode.For main line operation you have to switch to turbine mode.
I just got mine from Ulrich Models with upgraded led lighting.
Actually, the locomotive was used to move the turbine and lender around the rail yard to get it into position to pull its load, the turbine was always operational due to start-ups it would blow a 30 foot flame out the back until it warmed up, also, these were primarily used in rural areas due to the turbine high pitched "whistling", in populated areas, it was known to break windows up to 3 miles away
@tmlafrance I agree that sounds nothing like the prototypes did that has a sound like a regular EMD diesel and the whistle is wrong they had RS3L horns hell bought a bigboy model once and the soundboard had a whistle from the N&W 1218 talk about upset
We will be carrying some in may, Athearn Gas Turbine Veranda's. They sound great.

@BudSmokerPBH
did the real ones have back up diesels?
tpvalley 1 year ago
@tpvalley yes, from what I know the turbine was only used at cruising speeds and the diesel prime mover to get it up to speed.
therealsnow 1 year ago
@therealsnow The diesel was for hostling, the turbine was fully on line when in service.
