i cant stop watching this video man, its way too cool. very well put together and some awesome hunting, i wish we had visibility like that where i live
u queensland boys watch out lol lot of sharks there i live on christmas island w.a. one of the best places for spearin my parents always in qls so yeah love it asweel nice vid!!!
Yep they're bloody good value! I've got the latest HD version which takes phenomenal video on land, but doesn't seem to focus underwater...quite vexing! I'm going to send them an email to see if I've missed anything.
I'm thinking about getting a HD Hero myself. Did you hear back from them about the auto-focus underwater?
Also, how did you attach the camera to your head? I emailed the guys at Go Pro and they said they would be releasing the wrist mount for the HD soon. But if there's a good way of attaching to your head then I think that'd be much better than a wrist-cam!
Cheers mate! Yeh I'm dead set frothing for the season to open again...we've been doing a fair bit of exploration for new ground in the down time. Let me know if you're up in Geraldton way and I'll tee up a dive! Cheers, Tim
Yeh mate, the mackies are about...but its pretty hard to see them due to the wind/poor viz. I've been meaning to join the BWFD club, but no one can give me a straight answer on what the insurance actually covers. Seem like it doesn't cover all the critical stuff you'd actually need.
Very well put together vid an instant hit. Just wondering what was the average depth you are diving to in the vid and roughly what sort of time would you spend under water to make a comfortable ascent. cheers and post more. Represent W.A :)
Thanks mate! Depth varies between 5 and 17metres. Based on video footage, I estimate the average dive time varies between 1 - 2 minutes, however I don't own a dive watch and make a point of never rating my performance on bottom time. For me, it's all about listening to my body on the day. Hope this helps, Tim
i just went pole spear fishing a coupple days ago 4 the first time. it was the most beautiful thing ive done in a while. so pritty . ive wanted 2 do it 4 years ever since i started body boarding and bodysurfing a cupple years back, and just now did it. i need a fishing license cause im 19 , but once i get it ima go fish every time in in the water 3 times a week,, crescent bay in southern california is where i went and will be going for a verrry verryyy long time.
farrr out best spearfishing video out there YET! im new to spearfishing, curious question arnt u guys scared of attracting sharks?? because when i go for a spearo i get really nervous and scared..
Hi Jeff, if it makes you feel any better sharks still make me a little nervous when I'm diving by myself, and i still remember how I was REALLY nervous when i started out spearing. I would recommend starting out in 4-10m ground with a good team of mates. Diving the same ground helps you to become comfortable with your surroundings and having a good team around you gives added piece of mind. I really think it comes down to doing the time in the water, and if all else fails, buy as shark shield.
Depends mate on where you're diving. In Exmouth I saw sharks on every dive. However, in the mid west of W.A, I've only seen 3 sharks in about 2 years of diving. In all of the encounters I've had with sharks, I've never once felt as though they saw me as a source of food.
G'day mate, I'm glad you like the video! It was shot with a GoPro Wide angle camera, head mounted. I think head mounted gives a much better perspective to spearfishing and immerses the viewer more in what the diver sees...plus you don't miss the spear impact from the recoil like you get being gun mounted. Good luck!
Fantastic awsome vid Head mount great idea so true about recoil . We have being thinking about rubber mounts etc BUT head mount to good thanks for the idea, and while this sht weather hangs around nothing better to do.Any help appreiciated
Cheers mate! The head mount setup I'm using is the stock standard that comes with the GoPro. It's basically a head torch strap with a small plastic mount at the front. I think you'd be able to buy a cheap head torch and make a similar mount from fiberglass for you camera of choice. The GoPro is okay, but its not HD. I've ordered a ContourHD with a water housing, and I recommend you check these out over a GoPro if you intend to put your footage on the TV. Good luck!
I'd stick with the 16mm band, unless you have a 18mm band with a medium to long band length. Yesterday I tried my HF with a 20mm band and 6.5mm shaft and it was totally inaccurate due to spear whip. I'll be switching back to the 18mm band.
I tend to agree on more power doesn't equate to more fish, however the problem we have over here is VERY thick fish. A lot of the time you can shoot a Dhufish or Baldchin from close range with a 6.5mm shaft and the spear will only just penetrate the other side of the fish. As a result, I'm changing to a 7mm shaft for more inertia and thus travel through the fish.
first fish i ever shot with a speargun was a massive shaws cowfish (mitaken for a leather jacket) and it almost broke my shaft it was like shooting a rock.

Regarding the continuing questions on which gun I was using and what depth we were diving - please refer to the video description.
Estimated fish sizes: Maccy 32kg (bleed & gutted), Dhu circa 12-14kg, trout circa 7kg
Cheers for all the positive comments and interest!
Kind regards, Tim

nice.i have a rob allen sparid 900 with one 16mm band and 6.6mm shaft. would it be better with one 18mm band or 2 16mm bands?need reply asap.
sikig221 2 years ago
I'd stick with the 16mm band, unless you have a 18mm band with a medium to long band length. Yesterday I tried my HF with a 20mm band and 6.5mm shaft and it was totally inaccurate due to spear whip. I'll be switching back to the 18mm band.
timayliffe 2 years ago
6.6 shaft with a 16mm is fine. anything more is ridiculous
more power doesnt mean more fish, the truth is u just need to get closer to ur fish.
2 16mm will just be overpwoered and innacurate.
18mm is hectic, would go through a car door with that. its alot for a 6.6 shaft
StupidKunt09 2 years ago
I tend to agree on more power doesn't equate to more fish, however the problem we have over here is VERY thick fish. ifishanyweather 2 years ago
true. i didnt consider that you guys were shooting bigger fish.
be personally i like longer shafts @ 7.5 with 20mm because of accuracy and penitration.
but on a 900 i dont rekkon its worth it.
all in all i love my 1m RA reel gun. 7mm with 1x 16mm band, does wonders for comps and caves.
but i have lost a few big fish because of the lack of penetration, but im talkin bout 20kg+ kings
most fish it does the job
