I caught the original in London, believe it was early 1990. I thought it was one of the the best works I'd seen in a long time but I pretty much knew this was a work well ahead of it's time, especially for more conservative American audiences. Very happy to see some revivals bringing it back.
Saw this in New York years ago. Some below have called it "vapid" and some love the music. I think both are correct. There's some great music, but pretty bad plot.
@SongsJerome Yes, I really miss those ones. Beautiful, poignant, classy, melodies that really touch you on so many levels. The closest I've come to it, of late was the Lestat musical and Wicked, I didn't get to see them, but had the pleasure of hearing and seeing the performances via YouTube and other sites. It's time they brought back things like this, so far they are making a very good start of it!
The night I saw this on Broadway, the man behind me was farting for the whole show. That was the best part of the evening. What an utterly vapid, stupid show. The New York Times called it "2 hours and 45 minutes of actors running from scenery". It was so overproduced but nothing could cover up that it was just garbage.
the times critic did hate it when it came out in new york, but clive barnes the previous times critic loved it. i was enraptured by it. i remember i was in the throes of a passionate love affair at the time and the breathless highs and loves of my affair were captured by this production. i still listen to it. it remains my favorite ALW show, and it is his favorite. i am tempted to fly to london to see this production. unfortunately, i can't imagine it coming to new york for a long while.
I saw it in London & unfortunately the lead male was replaced by his understudy who made a rubbish job of this song which was the only decent tune in the entire show.
oooh thanks for posting. I might be playing a part in this (i reckon its the older version of Jenny) and there are hardly any videos to help me with jenny's part. but THANK YOU!
Ann Crumb and Michael Ball blew me away in 1990 in London.Magic together.
Anything But Lonely IS Ann's song.Cant find it on Youtube. All other ladies - sorry, she is the best with that haunting number.Thankyou Andrew and your fine lyricists!
seeing the original on broadway,I feel it's the most overlooked musical and I look foward to a revival.( Brava Ann Crumb; she is a gracious and talented Lady.)
Thanks so much for posting. I was a member of the original stage crew in London and worked on it for a year. Many years ago now. Was fantastic to see it performed again by Michael, Ann and the rest. Loved it. Woulderful.
i agree! i absolutely love this musical. the music and the singing are A+! apparently there is a dvd of this show, according to imdb...but how would one acquire a copy?

At the end of the day, Lloyd Webber's best work, say what you want, be he is the master of melody.

One of my favourite shows. More like a chamber opera overall than a musical (don't know how I feel about this version of this song, though...)

Saw the Original Broadway Cast in New York years ago. My opinion is that the show contains some of ALW's best music, but the show (plot) was weak.
