Dean had a great deal of help from Kazan though. He really needed the nurturing. I do think it may be possible that Dean would not have done as well as he did without Kazan. If youll notice his tv performances, which are pretty rare..youll see that there is a very small gap inbetween his television performances and his first major motion picture here were Dean seems to get immensly better in a VERY short time! Even look at his scripted audition footage right before the shooting of East....

Two of my favorite actors of all time! This pairing would have been amazing to see for the entire "East of Eden" film (for which Dean should have won the Oscar for Best Actor). Seeing him in that film when I was a teen was comparable to hearing the Beatles for the first time. And as for Paul; he's been in some of the best movies ever (Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, & The Sting) not to mention his charitble soul, giving all of his Newman's Own profits to the less fortunate. Dean had a great deal of help from Kazan though. He really needed the nurturing. I do think it may be possible that Dean would not have done as well as he did without Kazan. If youll notice his tv performances, which are pretty rare..youll see that there is a very small gap inbetween his television performances and his first major motion picture here were Dean seems to get immensly better in a VERY short time! Even look at his scripted audition footage right before the shooting of East....

@obladalifegoeson yeah, it woulda sucked.,At this point Newman hadnt hit his stride. Dean wanted to be the best and while im sure Newman was hungry, Deans acting was his religion. MqQueen Newman and Dean were all up for the same parts in NYC when they were up and coming and Dean was always a step ahead of them both stealing all the parts...i dont think the film woulda been as good if Newman got the role. And i LOVE Paul NEwman. I think the looks thing is subjective obviously. lol

It is true that Paul Newman was better looking than James Dean but that is because Paul Newman had an out of this world face . I have to say though that Paul Newman being a wonderfull human being who helped the less fortunate does not have half the talent or charisma that James Dean had he does not come close. Paul Newman even said that he worked hard to get to where he was at while Dean seems to be one of those naturally gifted people.

James Dean was so damned good-looking... yet, Paul Newman leaves him in the dust. Just my opinion... I love them both.
Newman was not tall, and yet he has a good 2 or so inches "advantage" on Dean. Only mentioning this because they were both instrumental in changing the American public's perception of what it took to make a "Leading Man" in Hollywood. Finally, men didn't have to be tall and dark... just handsome.

Two of my favorite actors of all time! This pairing would have been amazing to see for the entire "East of Eden" film (for which Dean should have won the Oscar for Best Actor). Seeing him in that film when I was a teen was comparable to hearing the Beatles for the first time. And as for Paul; he's been in some of the best movies ever (Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, & The Sting) not to mention his charitble soul, giving all of his Newman's Own profits to the less fortunate. How cool is that?

I believe he was straight, according to his cousin and Natalie Wood said he was romantic and was waiting for the right girl to spend his life with.
