Neighbourhood restaurants which had gas stoves allowed people in giving them hot food and drinks and heat! It was wonderful to see so many pull together and help one another out. I will never forget those days, what an experience, I have way more stories about that time!
I will never forget that storm! I lived in NDG at the time and we lost power for 3 days. But I was fortunate to have a gas stove, so I was able to wash, cook, and use it for a bit of heat! I remember walking at night out on the street in ice pellets nearly up to our knees and no lights to be found anywhere! It was surreal to say the least! The closed large parts of downtown due to ice falling off the skyscrapers! Salvation army had a truck out that served hot drinks and some hot soup!
@TheCroatiaKid The ice storm didn't hit Toronto. This is footage of Montreal/Ottawa. Your thinking of another event when they called in the military transports to act as ambulances cause they couldn't move in the snow.
I remember the whole family gathering at my grandparent's house, since they lived on route 148 and electricity wasn't always cut off. If was scary stuff, especially since I was only 7
Ah, many memories here...I was in Aylmer, QC (15 min. drive from Ottawa) when this happened. Missed two weeks of school and it wasn't even reason to celebrate. We got hit haaaaaard near my house, couldn't even go outside to play. I remember having to make sure you didn't start sliding down even the slightest hill cuz you'd be fucked. 5% incline = call for help if you're at the bottom.
I was among the few who only lost power for a few minutes during the whole 2 weeks, so I can't complain.
We were in Gray, Maine! Same thing paree. Out of power for a month. We had a wood burning stove. Took only gypsy baths. Kept the faucets dripping so the pipes would not freeze. Only candles lit the house. Daily, I attempted to walk to the local IGA and hope they had received a shipment of food, but too often the shelves were STILL as bare as Russia during Perestroika! HOWEVER, we were so grateful for everything. Life "After the Storm" was SO much better.
good job they did, funny how we get so ahead of ourselves with all this technology and we're all used to cars phones hydro,,when mother nature sends a beast down, we have it in for us. many dont even have a wood stove or the know how to feed themselves and keep warm in crisis like this with no power or modern luxury. Far out.
I remember this in Ottawa 98, i think i would have been nine. Two things, I was playing in our backyard when a couple large branches fell from the trees due to heavy ice on them and i got a concussion because one hit me on the head. Secondly, losing power for two weeks and having to stay in a shelter was loads of fun!!!!
It was, the Canadian Army went down to Ontario and Quebec to clear things up. I was 6 when it happened and I was/am living in Ottawa witch was also hit hard.
