  • Thats who Hendrix learned to play with his mouth from.. I asked him at the 2008 SXSW when I was working backstage and also filmed him. He is married to Jimi Hendrix sister and said Jimi used to come watch him all the time and picked it up,

  • Playin at Harvelle's in Santa Monica Sat Aug 6th

  • Harpgrinder, Wagman is back on the air at KJazz weekends 2-7pm after too long a hiatus and often plays Shorty

  • The man rips it up live, and I've seen audiences just lose it as he wades the crowd playing solo. He is a treasure--Guitar Shorty! Living and playing in the So Cal area these days so I understand.

  • Estuvo en el Costa Rica Blues Fest, increible el derroche de energia de Guitar Shorty, es puro sentimiento, INCREIBLE !!!, Thanks Shorty

  • I was listening Nuthin But The Blues about 10 yrs ago when Wagman was interviewing Shorty. He asked him if he still does the backflips an summer sauls (however you spell that) and he went on to tell the story of him hitting the edge of the stage and breaking his shoulder .......during a show! Shorty finally made enough money several years ago to buy a tour bus. He should be a dang millionaire for his mastery of the guitar and not talentless freaks like Britney Spears.

  • THanks Jamaal Forts....Sometimes people can't tell a piece a glass from a diamond. Thats why we get some old school macs that slip through the cracks. So many cats I am getting hip to later in life that have been there all along. Going to catch this gent at the Big Apple BBQ Festival this year. I am so excited. Great on the street shots. Good luck with all your hopes and dreams.

  • four ppl dnt knw the the meaning of true blues

  • Tried and true bluesman. Awesome!

  • i dont understand how someone could dislike this?

  • Love ya Shorty!!

  • YEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!

  • Shorty (David) is one of the most kind and most humble people you will ever meet

  • You Damn' Right i'got the blues....wonderfull shorty who's inspired another guitarist named "jimi hendrix"???who's he ?????looooool

  • What's the name of the song?

  • @Wolfslawyer IT'S A HARD LIFE. Find the video HARD LIFE BABY that someone posted. You'll recognize they are one and the same. If you get a chance to see Shorty live, DON'T MISS IT. He'll play this tune and walk through the crowd; indoors or outdoors, it doesn't matter. I've seen him perform a half dozen times and I'll see him twice this summer. He always gives it all he got.

  • @Stoplightcity TY, he should come to Portugal someday xD

  • What is the name of the song?

  • I thought I saw a Guitar Shorty doing backflips at Eli's in Oakland in the early 90's. Is this the same cat?

  • @FtMyersDon Yes sir. Shorty was big into back flips in his early career.,

  • He should play that gut punch blues with Joe Bonamassa!

  • man,affenstarke mucke

  • Lefy Diz used to do this at the Kingston Mines in the 80's.. with a 100 ft. cord.. LOL

  • I loved the show I saw in Sherman Oaks years ago. The band just vamped, I thought , whats up here? Wheres the big deal. Then from the back of the club came a sound that changes you ..well you know the rest of the story.

Cant wait for his Santa Fe gig July 09

  • Dude, guitar shorty is awesome. He blows me away.

  • Ive said this before...I cant believe how underrated this guy is.....we went to this blues festival and nobody from the 5000 people that where there knew who the old man with the hat was...then we heard him play....IIt was like some sort of epiphanic experience....when he finished and the other musicians came to stage....we didnt even heard them....we ALL wanted Guitar Shorty to play again...the videos of him here at YouTube cant be compared to the real thing...

  • I just discovered Guitar Shorty while looking for a place to celebrate my wife's b day and he will be in Houston on May 16th at The Big Easy . We will throw it down along with the man on this day!!!

  • ill see you at memphis in may hopefully just playing your guitar walking down the street lol;/

  • He plays

  • We miss you Guitar Shorty, please come to Salt Lake City !!! its been too long

  • I just saw Shorty today. He was AMAZING. THE BEST guitarist I've seen on stage.

  • Was it by any chance @ the Crawfish Blues Festival...in Augusta, NJ? Just wondering. I saw him there (my third time)on Sat., May 31st. Yes...I couldn't agree w/you more!! Please people...get out & see him when he's in your area...you'll be so glad you did!!!

    ;0)

  • No. It was in Maryland. I forgot the name of the festival, though. ;]

  • I just caught at the crawfish festival and just a couple of days ago at the turning point in ny he played for 3 hours and need I say more? I've seen and met many musicians and shorty by far has more class and gives his all on stage more than anybody else. Entertainers don't come any better!!! PERIOD..classyest ci yh

  • Those people are just walking by...man...I would have been following him...the whole way!!! Like he was the Pied Piper!!!!

    Love you Guitar Shorty!!!!!

  • damn it dont get more raw than that, walking the streets and playing the blues!!

  • Smooth and slick.... Guitar Shorty... is THE MAN !!!!

Not to mention his nephew (Mr. Jimi Hendrix). Who copped a whole slew of Guitar Shortys licks and tricks from THE MAN himself.

  • @rrwjw Jimi was his bro-in-law. Check out Guitar Shorty's website. He was married to Jimi's older sister.

  • I've seen Shorty 6 times; even held that G&L while he changed string one evening. You can't find a friendlier or more genuine "legend" to talk to.

    See him when you can!

    Brian

  • You are so right!!! I could not agree more. Guitar Shorty is the man!!! Let's try to spread the word...while he's still here with us...get out & see him & show our support. Plus that...he will blow your mind with his guitar playing!!! Jimi's brother-in-law at that...you can really see where he inspired Jimi!!! Love you Guitar Shorty!

    Peace & Blues in NYC,

    Barbara Butler

  • The man is absolutely incredible. Truly a living guitar legend, should be ranked right up there with Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. It's a real injustice that he's not much more widely known.......

  • I agree 100%. I've seen Shorty four or five times and I'm traveling two and one-half hours tonight to see him in Hermosa Beach. The best thing about the fact that relatively few people know of this living legend is that one can always get great seats at his performances, if you come a little early. Can you imagine hearing/reading his life's story! I've talked to him a few times and he is not a braggard, but he isn't modest either.

  • Saw in Ukiah twice, GREAT show Shorty

  • I love the blues

  • I saw him on friday in Ukiah, CA. it was amazing...you can tell who Jimmy hendrix learned some stuff from...if you got a chance to see him don't miss it...the bar I was was almost empty (better for the ones we've been there).

  • I saw Shorty again Saturday night at Harvelle's in Redondo Beach. I doubt there were more than 60 people there. He said he's thankful to up everyday and to have a chance to play for people. He said he'd play like it would be his last show and he did. He always does this number as one of his first few. For probably 15 minutes he went from table to table/booth to booth. He's always the same; he gives it his all. If you haven't seen him live you should.

  • Guitar Shorty paid his dues...should be ranked with the best of them.

  • people just walkin by like they don't see a thing.

  • Never heard Guitar Shorty until today.Loved the video and song.Guitar Shorty, you are now on my list of Guitar Gods!!!

  • worship guitar shorty!

  • did you know he was married to jimi hendrix's step sister? he could teach a thing or two

  • I just saw Shorty last night piermont ny and he was so damn good- as a lifetime rockfan I've seen many bigtime guitar gods and Shorty blows them all away.

  • i played HIS guitar today. =)

  • I saw Shorty at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival. Just plain awesome. Went up to get his autograph afterward and turns out he's a real nice guy to boot. I'm a deticated fan now. This strollin' around with the guitar has shades of Buddy Guy all over it.

  • Wow, what a tone this guy has - excellent! What amp does he use?

  • Two Fender Twins (Red Knobs).

  • I saw Shorty almost 40 years ago at an outdoor festival in BC, Aldergrove Beach Rock Fest, and he was doing backflips across the stage while ripping off riffs on guitar. Amazing player and entertainer. Glad he's still going strong.

  • I was also at that show last Saturday that featured Shorty along with Johnny Winter and Leon Russell. I has not heard of Guitar Shorty before that night. But as soon as I heard that guitar start singing, I was a fan. Beautiful tone. Beautiful playing. And a fun showman. I'm looking forward to seeing him again whenever he passes through this area.

  • I just saw him last night with Johnny Winter and Leon Russel. He was freakig amazing. He played Hey Joe, and even did the teeth solo.

  • Saw Shorty last year in a little dive in Bladensburg, MD. Going back to the same place TONIGHT to see him!!!

He pulled this same stunt, walked outside and around the street and stuff, came back in. My dad and I didn't know what to think. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Sabbath is playing tonight near my house, I'm going to she Shorty instead. That's saying something.

  • Guitar shorty is fantastic, I have seen him about 4 or 5 times...and he never has let me down. I have seen him on 2 occasions...playing in the middle of worthington street in springfield mass. and run...and do a flip.....never missing a note on his guitar! what a musician! If you have never seen him live...you need to!

  • Saw Guitar SHorty in North Lake Tahoe after hearing his Watch your Back CD. Not only was it the Best Show I've Ever Seen, Shorty and his Band are good people too.I Love this Video, it's how a Guitar Shorty Show really is...Too COOL !

  • hey now thats blues baby. shorty, this is your buddy

in detroit reminds me of all those times at siscos!!

hope you finally get your due you ARE the hardest workin man in show business,b.b. aint got shit on you!!

hope to see you in DETROIT soon love ya brother!!

    fred foley....

  • We saw him at teh Beale Street Music Fest here in Memphis a year ago, and he was awesome. Great tone on that G & L designed by Leo Fender. Played with his teeth and behind his back. Great blues all the way to Hendrix tunes, really puts on a good show!!

  • whatever guitar hes playing, great sound and great slow blues sound. Wish more newcomers would play the blues

  • A G&L Legacy Special is his main guitar. It has two G&L Blade pick-ups and a G&L Hot Rail in the bridge position. He often starts off his show with this number. He's a great entertainer and he's very personable. His last two ablums, Watch Your Back and We the People, contain track after track of this same style of seering blues.I could go on and on, but I'll just say now that you must see him for yourself. Arrive early and get a front row seat if you can. The first set is always his best.

  • in responce to drtdsararfa335 if you look at his headstock he's actually playing a G&L NOT a Fender ima a better made, better sounding g-tar. That and the fact that Guitar Shorty can kick some major *ss doen't hurt matters either.

  • hooooly shiot. The blues is definitely not dead.

  • saw him in jackson tn. in2005 at bluesfest , what a show. great guitarist.

  • I want to see him and buddy guy on the same stage.

  • well they played together at the one tree festival in bombay, india. killer show - though shorty was on as a guest for buddy's set and he ended up taking it over! :) i didn't mind at all, 'cept buddy was going to end with 'hey joe' with keith anderson guesting... was really looking forward to that...

  • Everyone...go see Guitar Shorty live!!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this video!!! Guitar Shorty is awesome!! I was wondering...if by any chance...you may have some video footage of Little Jimmy King. He was another awesome blues guitarist...that we lost way too soon. Thanks so much.

  • That is one bad ass sounding fender strat

  • well this is certainly where hendrix gets his style from, how ever, did hendrix aquire the high pitched screetching sounds for himself or was that learned from shorty too?

  • wow, this guy is good. . . with all that i know bout hendrix how did i not hear bout this dude?

  • hendrix actually learned some stuff from shorty

  • Who is this guy? He's heaps cool!

  • fantastic

  • Coooool sound and sightseeing tour around the block ... ;-)

  • Damn nice. Shorty playing slow blues without all those stinkin pedals. Hard to get much better than that.

  • it's quite good. that's for the great sound.
