You still are irradiating yourself. If you get xray film and place is where you normally stand then energize the tube you will find after getting it developed the film has been exposed. Not as strong as at the end but xrays are not entirely directional in your design. They radiate from the edges of your anode as well.
If enough voltage is placed across the tube, then it is capable of generating X-rays. This is, infact, how Roentgen discovered the,. It takes at least 5000V to generate x-rays from electron collisions with the glass.. The handheld Tesla coil I used to make this electron beam can generate voltages from 100,000V to 500,000V, so there are definitely X-rays being produced. It's why I never stand in front of the tube. :-)
