Well I never thought there were whippoorwills here in New Mexico , but a couple of years ago a bird flew into the warehouse where I worked . Immediately I recognized it as a whippoowill , since I spent a great deal of my childhood in rural Kentucky . I went into the office while the other guys were watching it and googled and printed a picture of one and showed it to them and they were identical . Come to find out NM is on the migration route for a couple of species .

Yeah, this is the southwestern Whip-poor-will, possibly a different species in the future. They sound very different from the eastern Whips.
