It's like, you create a puzzle for someone else to solve, if you manage to find a really tough one, and you work on it hard and long, you manage to reduce casualty rates on your side to zero and on his side to all, thén you post it online, and thén you'll sit back and count the ammound of attempts made on the challenge you posted. It's an ego trip thing, some have challenges with a 1000 attempted and only 30 victories, now tháts an ego trip! Complexity kills those, ship desighn variëty..ah..yes
there is also another game, "star trek: birth of the federation", probably more strategic and with 3 dimensional battles. still this reminds me of it.
well, no... it's not free. but the demo is. and you really should get the full game, the current version of the game is WAAAAAAY better... but i still come back to this vid for the music. :D
Looks amazing! but i would like to have the choise to play it in RTS, and/or Turn based against other players, kinda like in "Shadow Armada" or something. But anyway 2 thumbs up! :D kickass!
Needs even bigger ships, which in turn leads to more guns going spazzydickshit on everything, which in turn leads to MORE EXPLOSIONS. And then it needs even more of all of that. Aside from that this looks like an absolutely perfect game.
Man, I hope that's not accurate. This game looks to be far more entertaining than a tower-defense clone. I'm definitely going to hold out for a demo now.
"Making you able to control the battles would just make it like any other RTS."
Not necessarily; the degree of in-battle control could be very low in effect compared to the importance of preparative strategy. Without something more to do than watching these battles play out, my worry is that the game could become overly repetitive and devolve into trial-and-error.
I've said more about this in the Rock Paper Shotgun comments.
Great, you've made your point. The game is still in development and a lot can change; worry about repetition when it actually happens in focus testing. Speculative design is useless.
I'm excited about this game, too and I'm looking forward to seeing more...
Like Halibut and others have said, it would change the nature of the game. I like the idea that I get to intricately plan out battle orders to see what happens, then adjust accordingly in a new battle. This game isn't going to be for the feint of heart.
As for trial and error, I guess you could call that "Guess and not learn" behaviour. For the rest of us, we'll be trying tactics and strategies and deployments, over and over, to learn. Then challenging our friends to beat us. :)
Now that I can see some interface stuff, I'm getting very excited about this game. However, I think it is a big mistake to have the player helplessly watch as battles play out once preparations are complete. No matter how gorgeous the game, that's a missed opportunity. It's fine to limit the types of adjustments that can be made to unit deployment, but how about on-the-fly tech research or support ship roles? In-battle narration or tactical orders? Players need more to do than watch.
Why? The whole point of the game is in the design and the preparation, then seeing how your plans play out as a result of that. Making you able to control the battles would just make it like any other RTS.
I love the idea of setting up and then watching how it turns out. I REALLY hope there is a PBEM option - does the battle turn out the same every time if you set it up the same way? that would be absolutely incredible. Even if the battle turns out different everytime, this game is on my short list of next to buy.
@TotalHalibut i agree, to do something unique is the way of indie games. they are pretty much the companies that comes up with new and intresting gameplays instead of just heaping up a ton of FPS or RTS that are pretty much the same in structure.
Impressive.

Anyone know of any games like this? Where you setup the battle but don't actually have any control once the fight starts.

Scha-weeet! If you want it to be HUUUUGE, add an option for modders to create their own ships for it.
I mean, if *modders* ended up enabling the Star Trek vs. Battlestar Galactica battle, it wouldn't be YOUR fault... :)
