First off wanted to say Thank You for your service to NSW and the fitness community. 14 days ago I started you pullup routine. First day did 10 dead hang for my "Max". That day including the next 13 I did 6 sets of 7 reps. (Yes 42 not 40...) Each day I made sure to make each pull-up as quality ones required at past PST's. Today I "re-tested" and my max went up by 70%. Total of 17 dead hangs, thats impressive being 5' 11", 185lbs.
@5graffitiartist5 hey I'm at 16 to and i stared this yesterday and what I'm doing (i heard its what you do also) is start at half your max so 8 for us then keep doing sets of 8 as long as possible and once you get to tired to do that many you go to failure so what i did exactly was 8 8 8 5 4 4 4 (break) 7 7 5 4 hope this helps
Hey Stew Smith, right now this is my turning point towards the end of high school and I've been fascinated with the SEALs since then. I'm fallowing your training tips and it has been very useful. On the other hand, even though I'm preparing myself physically, I don't how to prepare myself mentally. I know that BUD/S is one of the most physically demanding military training in the world, but I really need some useful tips on how to stay motivated if I were to go through the program
@myemail987654321 Unless you're using enhancers, your body will always retain the strength and endurance you have accumulated. The reason for this is your body is toughening up to deal with this new found stress it's receiving so that it won't be damaged by that same level of stress again. If you stop your physical training abruptly, your body will eventually lower it's "defenses" as it's no longer necessary in the absence of stress. You'll need to continue training for the effects to stay.
Ok, i love your workouts and i have a question i have been doing this for the past 2 1/2 weeks and i went from 20 push ups to 50 and from 15 pullups to 20 pullups but i wonder can i just do this over and over until i get my over all goal
Great video. One thing about supercompensation that is important to understand is that since you are putting off the full recovery of the muscles for a longer period of time, it is VITAL that you warm up and stretch properly throughout. This helps prepare you both mentally and physically for continuous work. It will also ensure that your muscles get proper blood circulation in advance of the work, so they recover faster, perform better, and protect your ligaments and tendons.
ty for responding stew i just did 23 pull ups military once a few days ago perfect form im going to 30 and then 40. so one i should be ready for CSOR in 3 years and then jtf2 in 5 JTF2 and navy seals work side by side sometimes i hope to meet you one you are one of my idols. oh yeah i watched super soldier im u tube and saw your performance after 1 hour in a freezing tank......B E A S T.
@IceDragonsify do YOU feel good about yourself that you can do 'em? if yes, then yes. if no, then do what makes you feel good about yourself. only compete against YOURSELF.
I did this prgram at the begininng of summer (June) and I didnt see a notable incrase. I could only do 50 (struggling) at the time. ANd after the 3 day rest 50 was still a challenge.
Ive been doing 100 morning warmup pushups everyday though when i wake up. Usually 50, brush my teeth, 25, pee, and 25 more. Now I can do about 60-75 (MAX) in two minutes.
After intro music audio is gone, is there another place to watch this video with the audio. Looking to buy one of Mr Smiths ebook, just picking up some of the tips off here
No - I have been doing this workout since 1995 when I was an instructor at the Naval Academy. I like Pavel's stuff and his "grease the groove" is similar and a great concept. Never borrowed it though...SS
@stew50smith Hello sir. I have a question about the pst test. When you are doing your pushups or situps, does it have to be continuous or can you manage your two minutes the way you want? for example, If i do 45 pushups and then bridge for five seconds to rest, (knees don't touch obviously) is that illegal? does it have to be nonstop movement? same for situps. I guess the general question is, without touching the ground, can you use a few seconds to rest as you please on the pst? thank you, Troy
@stew50smith So for the initial set to see where i'm at, is it only how many push ups I can do without stopping? or say going for 2 minutes using the rest position?
So you really shouldn't workout the couple days before your PST...because I have a SWCC PST coming up in less than a month...so should I stop even without this workout a couple days before the PST?
It's called supercompensation. Definitely not something to do frequently, but it can be very effective. I think it's originally a concept from eastern european weightlifting protocols.
Ever work with Air Force TACPs? I was thinking of using TACP as "gateway" for CCT. I hate radios, but whatever... it's a good way to get combat dive. I was a 24 day non select at SFAS due to lack of Army experience back in 2006. I've been in a Long Range Surveillance unit in the NG, but they never deploy or use us for what we are supposed to be used for. I figured I'd go TACP, get some deployment time and radio experience, then move on.
Mr. Smith, I'm about to head off for either West Point or the Naval Academy at the end of June. Because I am a female, I was not required to do an actual pull up for the CFA. My question for you is (and I'm sorry if people have asked you this a bunch of times already) how do I get to one pull up? Which exercise should I do so I am at least able to do 3 or 4 pull ups when the end of June rears its ugly head? Thanks for any input you may have!
@kakashihatakegirl I went from being able to 0 pull ups to 20 in about two months. If you are still looking for an answer, private message me and I will explain how I did it, I'm sure it will help you too.
@kakashihatakegirl if you have a membership to a gym you could do pull downs. where you have a bar over your head thats attached to weights and pull the bar towards you. its like a pull up but you move the bar to you rather than yourself to the bar. you can do those with this same workout hes showing in the video until you get strong enough to do pull ups
@tinmanism I don't think you fully understood my statement buddy. I'm not trying to show off here by saying how much I can do. I am simply asking for an opinion because as I can recall, I wrote "...for starters?" and "doable in 3-4 month". Read over the comment again. Learn to give proper advice, or don't give none at all, you may end up offending somebody.
Thanks for the tip Stew. I am doing around 13 dead hand pullups and 73 push ups right now. I will try the pull ups first and post my results. I assume you are not going to failure on any give set during the 10 days of 4x your max?
I'm gonna try this. I can do 50 in about min 20 and then i really start to slow down b/c im getting so burnt out. but i can do 8-11 dead hang pull ups.
I have two best friends. One is a Marine, the other is in the Army. Both serving for a little more then a year now. I would like to become a Navy SEAL.
I can do 50 pushups in 1:30 min. 60 situps in 1:30 min. 5 pullups (dead hang).
I guess it's not bad for starters. Only problem is, i don't run (at all) i do get to stand a lot at work, and i don't swim.
I guess i have a long way to go before Boot camp and ESPECIALLY PFT?
P.S: Is getting ready for PFT doable in 3-4 month? That's my goal.
@crims111 I dont want to dampen your motivation but 50 pushups, 60 sit ups,.. they dont mean anything if you want to join the Navy SEALs. especially if you dont run. i can do much much more than you do and i still dont consider myself fit enough for SEALs.
search for Bud131 from youtube for more advice about this!!
Depends on where you started too. If you could only do 10 pushups that is pretty good inprovement. If you could get 60+ when you started you are not going to see that massive of an increase. I have seen people double from 40-50 to 80-100. How did you spend your 3 days recovery period?
@arjont by survive he is more than likely refering to surviving bootcamp not surviving a life threatening scenario.
In the SEALs it is said the people who are just trying to survive BUD/s are the 1st ones to wash out. And the people who are Competing to be the best of their class or just to be the best overall are their to collect their trident on graduation day.
@5graffitiartist5 on the off days you are breaking up the reps throughout the day so you have some rest inbetween then after the 10 days you take 3 days off and let your body recover.
pushups went from 50- 100 in 2 minutes but i could continue to 130reps total after the 2 minute time period, situps went from 50- 80 in 2 minutes but i could continue all the way to 115 after the 2 minute time period without failing, and my pullups went from 6 to 13. during this training i also built up to a 5k run in 24minutes.
i never ran 2 consistent miles straight through and now i can run 3.1 and even get under 15minutes in my 2 mile timed runs because i build up the mileage throughout my weeks of training.
@0587dave ..Hey, Im training for Accelerated OCS and I have a record PFT in July. My last PT scores were 54PU 59SU 14:24RUN. I want to know the specifics of how this worked for you eg your height and weight, how did you break down your sets through out the day, and an overall insight of what seems to be a very challenging regimen....Thanks in advance ..
would this convert well to sit-ups also? very interesting... i have a pft this wednesday but ill use that as the start of my max and ill be sure to let you know how it works out.
I can do 60-70, not 80. It's just upper body strength I guess. I don't see how you can do 8 pull-ups. And there's people who are weaker than me (lost to me in a arm-wrestle match) that can do 15 pull-ups.
@anthcybo biomechanics man. arm wrestling mechanices and leverage vary from person to person and thats something you really cant compare to pullup strength because they are 2 different movements. you could possibly test the activation of the fibers being worked and compare them strong biceps doing always mean good pullups and it doesnt always mean good arm wrestling.
@richardm80 I did a calesthenics circuit pushups/pullups/situps for a month so, pushups i started doing 4 sets of 15, my max being around 40 at the time, then made my way to 4 sets of 35, now i can do 82 in two minutes :P pushups have always been easy for me though..i only could do like 4 pullups before i started doing the circuits..i hope this method pushes me up to 13-15
@Kiyobboy i used to train like that too doing multiple sets of the same number and always got stuck. i found i wasnt reaching my peak reps on any of the sets. so i started pyramind and it allowed me to build up to my peak reps then come back down slowly to continue hitting the muscles. once you hit peak reps its almost impossible to hit them on 3-4 more sets right after that.
@POWERJFROMLA x5 increase, awesome man. Keep up the good work. If you do it again you'll be doing 75, but hey, if you did it once then you can do it again. Keep it up my man.
I would not - I would only do this workout 1-2 times a year - after the 2 weeks do more of a split routine where you do pyramids, supersets, max rep workouts for time - so only 3 days a week max ...
@stew50smith i'm curious..how come you say you would only do this 1-2 times a year? is it because of possible muscle/joint strain or because it throws off your other workout schedules?
I was thinking of adding this concept to my workout routine, so I would only be doing a couple workouts per day but w/ many sets during that day plus running and swimming.
that can't be bad or strenuous for your body can it? as long as it is progressively kept up w/ a couple days off in between for recovery?
Hey Stew, I came across this vid. Im a Doc about to start the Marine Recon pipeline. I would love to increase my numbers. Would this same theory work for situps?
Stew do you recommend starting the program up again after the 3 days off, or is this more of a jump-start for those who are pretty low on the APFT scale? Thanks for all of your vids!! They are extremely helpful for those interested in the service.
Should I cut out lifting weights for these ten days?

would this convert well to sit-ups also? very interesting... i have a pft this wednesday but ill use that as the start of my max and ill be sure to let you know how it works out.
slimthugga34 2 years ago
how did it work out?
ANZACJugger0 1 year ago
Right now, I am able to do 70-80 excellent push ups in two minutes. I should try this routine and see if I am able to blow past 100.
I cannot do as many pull ups. My max is 13 dead hand pull ups.
skyunlimited87 2 years ago
@skyunlimited87
I went from 14 - 16 in about 5 days time.
I would have made a video testimonial but I didnt complete the program for fear of
reaching a plateau due to overtraining. One
these days I might just say fuck it and do the full 10 days. I kept a log of all the days, what muscles felt sore,
how difficult it was, etc. Perhaps I'll post a
response of progress of 5 days for anyone with
the same concerns I had.?

13 dead? bloody hell i can only do about 8 :/
Niklagi 1 year ago
Thanks Stew Smith, you've helped me again, my max on pushups are 80, and pullups 30.

deathreeper265 2 years ago
I can only do about 25 push ups and 8 pull ups and I am 5'9, 140lbs. 23yr old male. lol
richardm80 2 years ago
i'm the same height and weight. i can only do 8 pullups as well..but 80 pushups :P shootin for 15 pullups before i go to marines boot camp though
Kiyobboy 1 year ago 10
@Kiyobboy How can you do 80 pushups in one go? I can only do like 25 and want to increase my number. I find them hard.
richardm80 1 year ago
@richardm80
I can do like 60 push-ups and like 2 or 3 pull-ups. Maybe it's because i'm 160 lbs.

@anthcybo How can you do 80 pushups in one go? I can only do like 25 and want to increase my number. I've never been able to do more than 40.
richardm80 1 year ago
@richardm80
I can do 60-70, not 80. It's just upper body strength I guess. I don't see how you can do 8 pull-ups. And there's people who are weaker than me (lost to me in a arm-wrestle match) that can do 15 pull-ups.
anthcybo 1 year ago
@anthcybo biomechanics man. arm wrestling mechanices and leverage vary from person to person and thats something you really cant compare to pullup strength because they are 2 different movements. you could possibly test the activation of the fibers being worked and compare them strong biceps doing always mean good pullups and it doesnt always mean good arm wrestling.

@richardm80 I did a calesthenics circuit pushups/pullups/situps for a month so, pushups i started doing 4 sets of 15, my max being around 40 at the time, then made my way to 4 sets of 35, now i can do 82 in two minutes :P pushups have always been easy for me though..i only could do like 4 pullups before i started doing the circuits..i hope this method pushes me up to 13-15
Kiyobboy 1 year ago
@Kiyobboy i used to train like that too doing multiple sets of the same number and always got stuck. i found i wasnt reaching my peak reps on any of the sets. so i started pyramind and it allowed me to build up to my peak reps then come back down slowly to continue hitting the muscles. once you hit peak reps its almost impossible to hit them on 3-4 more sets right after that.

i went from 3 to 15

How did you do?
partemisio 2 years ago
I have the swat workout and was wondering do you do this added on to the the push-ups in your daily workout or are those push ups included in the 200
droolyjack 2 years ago
Those push ups would be included in the 200.
partemisio 2 years ago

Would this same theory work for situps?
doccheezzy 1 year ago
Stew do you recommend starting the program up again after the 3 days off, or is this more of a jump-start for those who are pretty low on the APFT scale? Thanks for all of your vids!! They are extremely helpful for those interested in the service.
