I've heard figures of 17% - 20% as to the percentage of American GDP spent on advertising and P.R. Just think if that money could be redirected to the manufacture of products or to social services; the truth is even big business hates advertising, it's an arms race, but it would be illegal for them to conspire as a cartel to agree that nobody can advertise.
Everybody wins, businesses, consumers and the politicians that enact such laws! Viva Sao Paulo!
Heard about this in 'greatest movie ever sold' and I'm somewhat torn about the whole thing. Yes, most advertising makes a city look ugly, especially if placed near old buildings but a modern city without colourful ads does nothing but remind me of communist utopia. Brrrr
I live here in Sao Paulo and I love this law, the city is beautiful! Congratulations for the documentary, it's perfect. And.. it's good to know that the world likes my city²
Parabens! It will be interesting to see what impact PDAs like iPhone's will have on the ability for businesses to advertise. I get more advertising through email than I do from billboards, that is, target advertising.

That is the stupidest shit i've ever heard. Seriously, how does that help the environment? I would commit suicide if this occurred here in Toronto! I mean seriously, i'd feel like i'm living in a fucking communist country like North Korea, youtube "Pyongyang". You'll see what i mean! So damn BORING and DEAD and typical of a COMMUNIST. Well fuck communism, long live CAPITALISM!!
As an aspiring political representative in the Netherlands I wrote in my election program that I want to outlaw advertising in order for capitalism to function more rationally. Let intermediairies, (friends, journalists, other users on website) recommend products rather than marketing do it. That is so much better for the planet. As a rule, one should not be allowed to buy attention. Something the state can find in the accounting of any company, just like VAT can also be imposed.
I was born in Sao Paulo, but I live abroad (5 years) - When I went there on holliday, I noticed how the city was transformed.
It's so much better !! Even the historical buildings had been "covered" by horrible adverts for decades, but now we can see all the shopkeepers painting the front of the building, choosing the right collor, etc. and the population can appreciate a little bit more of the arquitecture of the city.
And, most important, developed the sense of organization
Great piece, nice reporting! We at Scenic America are working to raise awareness on many of the issues broached in the story. We recently put together a visual essay about urban advertising in this country. You can view it by clicking on ScenicAmerica above and clicking on "A Visual Essay on Urban Sign Pollution" from our videos. Thanks!
Thanks for the video - I got to see it because it's posted at Alternet dot org today.
Thanks also for introducing me to the band whose music is used in the first half of the video, and whose leader is interviewed, Nacao Zumbi - I caught their name scrolling by in the end credits, and sure enough they have a myspace profile, in their name.
At last, there is a city passing a corporate graffiti ban. Now if they can only get a corporate littering ban passed, too, that would be major progress!
I think you should throw some more tags on for this video like- corporation - adbusters - globalization - corporate responsiblity- etc. I'd like to see this video get more exposure
this is great story. Why has it only got 100 views? I notice CNN has absolutly no coverage of this story. BBC has one article a year ago. Why the coverup? In a socialist society you can't talk back to the government. In a capitalist society you can't talk back to the sponser.

I'm from Metro Manila (Philippines) and I approve this video and wish for the same for my country. Less billboards; more trees!

It would be great if all ads disappeared everywhere, to be replaced by actual art that has no commercial ties.

It's an interesting idea to ban outdoor advertising, but it's no wonder the mayor got mad at the reporter -- that was a poorly-worded question.

Concordo com a Lei, ninguem merece se sentir vivendo dentro de uma revista, mas que esse prefeito eh grosso, tambem ninguem merece...

Great reporting, great video. Great idea to ban advertising.
Sounds like the politicians and businessmen in charge will let advertisements exist though where they see fit.

Good Idea.
i SEE that your right wing politicians have also become "not right but center", or so they tell us.
