Amazing tune, soulful...but I can never keep a straight face when ol Crosby comes sauntering on over to the piano, looking half lost, flying high...then just snaps into back up vocals.
@DaFreakingNapzter Good questions require good answers: It is probably the video quality uploaded that is not to be liked, else, Nash's deep introspectoin, feelin' and talent just can't be disliked nowhere in the universe..
That song, 4 and 20, if I don't remember bad, was sung by Stephen Stills. You cand find it in a record named "Stephen Stills Live" (I suppose nowadays you will find it in CD). That was an interesting live record with one acoustic side (with a beautiful version of "Everybody's talkin") and an electric side (with a non less spectacular version of "Rocky Mountain Way")
@fernandodelatorre: The original 4 +20 song was on the second album when the group became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The name of that album in Deja vu. CSN and CSN & Y were the early super groups.
@pmoyer50 . Yes, you are right. I still have those old records that I bought in the 70's. But my prefer version is that one Stills sung by himself in his alive record. Anyway both versions are great, as all those records they made alone or with the group
@fernandodelatorre: I'll have to check out the live version you're talking about. Did you ever listen to any songs played by Chris Stills - the son of Stephen Stills nonetheless? Some talents are inherited. I remember buying "Songs for Beginners" when it first came out in vinyl. I recently downloaded it onto my ipod. It brings out great memories in very turbulent times.
@pmoyer50 I never heard about Chris Stills. I will try to listen something from him, I'm really curious about that. I really recommend you that "Stephen Stills Live" with an electric side and an acoustic one. This is an old record, from the 70's.
I bought "Songs for beginners" in London in 1972 and I felt so lucky as that L.P. was never released in Spain. Those songs (and that wonderful first "G.Nash & D.Crosby with "Southbound train" and "Immigration man" ) influenced me deeply even in my own music, I remember that time as if it was yesterday, it was a great time (maybe because I was only 18?)

@surferrandys They DO listen believe me- my kids and friends do listen and love it all - as well as RAP country drum'n'base which i as an old hippy love too. we and it all needs eachother to balance x
oh my goodness man, this song is so sad so touching especially on the opening scene of REIGN OVER ME...so sad to think of the people that lost their families or loved ones in 911 or to ANY unforseen tragedy...thats what this song means...that scene will make you cry if you have a true heart
well seeing how american idol aint about music i dont know Graham nash crosby stills and young let their unique qualities personalize the pure origion of music which is a gentle fragile thing and it takes real people who are ready to open their minds and hearts american idol is about who has the best disguise and who can make their fake music sound intresting to robots some might call them people
@JG00DE1 Definitely agree with this guy, i would prefer the blindness too. Hearing at music like this bring us peace to our souls, wich every time gets more filled with torment becouse of the shit that our eyes show us.
I created an account just to comment on this tune, after asking Hippie1944 to put it up as the feature on his channel, where a lot of my original music resides. This is a song that has had a large influence on me. Over the last week I think I've listened to it 25 times or more. @MrMoshe65 Nope. It's well-known and well-documented by Mr. Nash himself that this was written for Joni Mitchell. Yes, he was involved w/Rita Coolidge in 1970, after the breakup w/Joni. See the David Crosby song "Cowboy Movie" from his solo album "If I Could Only Remember My Name." Rita, who was involved w/Stills and was then "stolen" by Graham, is "Raven," the "sweet young Indian girl" character in the song.
He wrote this song after he broke up with, dang, can't remember her name but she was a singer also. He also wrote a few other songs about her. He really loved her.
@JohnnyJoe yea you're prob right my friend. Have killed a few brain cells since he wrote that song so sometimes my memory is there and sometimes it's on cloud 9.
This song discusses a hard-to-describe feeling very simply and eloquently. "I wish that I could see you once again across the room" sums up the way I feel about my losses. *sigh* I'm sick of emotion
OK, here's one I'm looking for, if any of the Graham Nash fans out there can hook me up. Does anyone out there have the video for a mid 80's song he did called Innocent Eyes? I remember seeing this video on MTV, John Ritter from Three's Company was in the video. Can someone out there post it?
Often a mark of a great song is the fact that when stripped back to just an instrument or two and a couple of voices it still retains every ounce of poignancy.
One of my favorites from one of my favorite artists. Graham is a vocal talent from his days singing three part harmony with the Hollies and helping write all their early hits, to being the high harmony vocal in CS&N, to tender, well written and well performed ballads like this as a solo artist. Check out Chicago from that first album as well.
yeah I know how it feels-wanting to be with someone so bad but knowing they dont dont feel the same about you, and wanting to go back to the beginning. great song though

This song was used over the opening credits of "Reign Over Me."
It's just another song that makes me think of the woman I will always love, and how much I miss her.
