Do you have Lighten Up the Load live anywhere on video? Justin sang it in the mid 90s for me in Chicago after I asked him for a week's worth of shows in a row. I have the B side of it, but would love to find it live.
if anyone wants a copy of 'drowned on dry land', send an e-mail to: dnldslvstr@yahoo.com and i can send it to you. it's a quality electro-acoustic radio version. no cost, no signing up to anything. just want to spread the love to dels fans.
I loved Del Amitri, their songs just fit with the times I was going through, saw them play a few times, and sitting watching this just brings everything back. So the bus is pulling out and grounded here with you.. sigh.
This song will forever remind me of a 7 year bitter/sweet affair. The lyrics perfectly describe the desire and guilt of an adulterous relationship - so good and so wrong. Del Amitri was the soundtrack to my life with her - then it ended. Saw the Justin Currie at ULU not long after the breakup and when he played this it was emotional to say the least.
It's so weird...I have been listening to their music for a few years now (thanks to Scrubs...the soundtrack to that show is amazing, no matter what season) and I never bothered to look up their videos on youtube till now. They look different than what I imagined...not bad, just different lol.
I love their sound though and their lyrics always hit home for me:).
Del Amitri does not exist anymore. Singer/songwriter Justin Currie is stil active though. He has made two solo albums ( What Is Love For and The Great War). Justin is currently touring, see his "My Space"
Especially She Cuts Her Own Fringe which would have fitted right into any Dels or Justin Currie record. It has all the Justin trade marks, excellent melody and lyrically I guess the title sais it all.
I do have the Aberdeen show on VHS, though. It was packaged as an extra on the 'Hatful of rain' hits collection. There is Macrovision protection, which stops it being transferred to DVD.
Saw them perform in Utrecht (the Netherlands) in the beginning of the nineties. Their songs never bore me. Especially this one! What an amazing band. Thanks for this video!
I fully agree, well put rob5413. Have you heard Justin’s new record? It’s available on Spotify. Could have been Dels album, then again Justin wrote the vast majority of their songs.
"Drowned on Dry Land" was a b-side that is no longer available, although I'm sure you could find the original recording somewhere online. I encourage Del Amitri fans to explore their world of b-sides. Good stuff.
I have just started to upload some old B-sides and rare recordings I have. They will come with lyrics, in lack of videos. So keep an eye on JustinCurrieFan, there will be some good stuff coming.
One of my favourite Del Amitri songs - but play the acoustic guitar and I go weak at the knees anyway! To this day, he's still a handsome dude - well for an old git (LOL - joking)...Gosh, wish I had a Downfall tonight :-)
Del Amitri songs and Justin's talent (both vocally and lyrically) are unquestionable. Songs that speak to your heart and soul. Look at his performance right now, how can you not admire the fact that he sings his heart out to he audience. I have nothing but great respect for the man, his work and the bands work.
absolutely stunning. justin currie is a fantastic lyricist. the two songs fit together seamlessly in this performance. i was lucky enough to see del amitri at preston guild hall quite a few years ago. at the time, i was only really familiar with the radio played, singles. i have to say they were fantastic and prompted me to listen to them in more depth. be my downfall is now one of my all time favourite songs thanks for posting this clip.
I am close to removing this comment on Iain Harvie, just based on this clip. He was after all the second founding member of Del Amitri. I am Swedish but I believe I know enough English to understand how rude this comment is. waterdoggz, consider yourself one foul language comment away from being blocked.
@waterdoggz Don't get your panties in a bunch!!! Del Amitri's a great band, but Justin's the genius. Ok so Iain a founding member he still look's like some premadonna jerk off, so block me! like i give a shit, go get a job douche bag in stead off policing comments on the tube....
I dont care too much about comments on the tube in general. But when it comes to my tiny far off JustinCurrieFan corner of cyber space, I rule and I cant help wondering which one of us is being out of a job.
@JustinCurrieFan I'm all on your side here, JustinCurrieFan and I think you said all that needs to be said in your reply to waterdoggz who seems to get his kicks from insulting people he doesn't know.
Fantastic . At last I've found/seen "Drowned on Dry Land". As Celtic Ghirl says,it should have been a single or at least on an album as it's just brilliant. Got to go now - I've got a special evening planned...............
Great! Wish that this outstanding concert was issued on DVD in the US, or anywhere! Love the thing that Justin says about the Pasta Bella restaurant before this: "Air conditioning - that's handy here in Aberdeen...OPEN THE F!*%$#g WINDOW!!"
I just read where this footage is from. The TV station probably edited that bit out since Justin said some bad words. I have a dodgy tape copy made from a UK tape transfer to VHS. This band was pretty impressive and Justin's songs are still incredible.
I have the Video for this concert and he defo does say it , i should really get it converted to DVD......I forget about drowned on dry land .......so good
Does your video contain more than the seven songs that were in my posted Swedish broadcast? I am surprised that Swedish TV has edited out a little cursing, you have never ever heard a bleep on SVT. Either -The Foul Language Censorship Office-? at SVT did not believe we knew the meaning of the f-word anyway, or better yet they did not ;-)
I guess that is too much to hope for, but maybe another solo album from Justin would be more realistic. If the songs on his MySpace hint what is to expect we are in for another masterpiece to follow up "What is love for" and Justin has outdone himself yet again.
The TV footage also edited out the original ending to 'What I Think She Sees'. I used to have a radio version where it went on longer. On this tour Del Amitri used to extend the song 'What I Think She Sees' to make a kind of tribute to Dylan's 'It Ain't Me Babe' which is a lyrically similar song. Good to see these vids again. Thanks
One more thing. I dont know where youre from, meaning if you have access to Spotify or not, but please note the Spotify link just below the clip information (top right corner). Here you can listen to the original song shown in the video. Thus contributing to the wellbeing of the best song writer ever around (Justin Currie)

does anyone know what tuning they use for this song?
Farjamed 1 year ago
@Farjamed
This is as close as it gets to the tuning Justin uses in the video.
Just Google: the5thfret/chords/change/be_my_downfall and it will come up as the first hit.
JustinCurrieFan 1 year ago
@Farjamed
Hi man I play this in standard e a g b d e tuning without a capo (or a capo on the first fret depending on the pitch of your voice)
Played in G. try playing a C shape on the third fret for the D major. Sounds great.
You could also try dropping the top E string to a D and play that open. See what you think and let me know how you get on.
Happy New Year to you - Steve
