This is probably the very last song I would ever expect Julee to cover...but she makes it work. It surely won't replace the original, but I like it just fine. Right? (whisper)Right(/whisper)
Sounds worse than bad. It sounds boring. It sounds lukewarm. not good, not bad. Just *there*. Hmmmm, what would I have rather seen her cover...let...me ....think.... how about a less well known cover of REM? Cruise kinda missed the boat with covers, she was a shoe in for the Naouvelle Vauge vogue a few years ago...anyways, how about that one song, "My Penis" that came out in 1989?
You know. . . I can see why someone might not like it. But. . . I gotta say I don't think it's that bad. I might like it more it if she changed the lyrics a bit. The choppy stream of conscious works better with the frenetic pace of the original; this slow, moody cover should have lyrics that cohere a little more tightly.
IMHO it feels like the mellow vibe brings out the lyrics a little more vibrantly and clearer to understanding the message of the song. Her voice has an hypnotic quality to add as well. I loved it. Shes great on Handsome Boy2.
This is absolutely horrible. The original is a patter song, it rushes headlong and breakneck speed to get itself out and explains why there is so much urgency in the chorus. This on the other hand is a travesty. It keeps the same verbal cadence, but then slows it down, which robs the song of two things. Its urgency, and its sense of humor at its own expense. Instead of a complex song, we're left with a song which relies completely on the pretty, but soulless, vocals.
somewhat reminiscent of a Nick Cave song with some chick touching upon cities "burning with the flesh of men" and the seas boiling and other likewise discomforts :)
A very different feel to REMs version. Despite having the same lyrics I don't think it would be fair to compare them as they both evoke very different emotions successfully.
Must agree completely my friend. I've had admiration, bordering personal obsession with both, but that is not to say that if I like ice cream and pizza, I'd like to have them both at the same time :) Nevertheless, that has been somewhat a succesful mix, I rather like it but will not discard the original.
The difference between the effect she has on this song vs. Madonna's on American Pie: This one worked very well, and I was able to listen to it the whole way through... Madonna's American Pie? Could not listen to it. Still won't. Putrid.
Like Madonna's cover of American Pie this also helps to focus on the lyrical content in a way I just can't put my finger on, maybe it's the simple act of another artists interpretation causing the listener to listen to the words rather than the whole ensemble.

like it or not is subjective.

@pigallewunder your face destroyed humanity as we know it, yet we survived, didn't we? So, music will survive Julee's unique interpretation.

Love Julee Cruise, hate this. It sounds cheap , rushed and nasty. Not her voice of course but the instrumentation is shit awful. Piss awful.
