I note on this project you solder the bolt to another sleeve and then bond that onto the bolt when setting the camming up towards the end, thanks for the reply.
I had Williams rebuild all my Remingtons as soon as I bought them..
Have you ever built a 6,5X284? I have one built on a 06 action from a Remington, there is only a few rifles I love as much, as for Deer? HU! if I can see them I can shoot them. It has a MOA of 3/8 with 3 shots. At 100 yards. It will drop a Derr so fast you think the Deer is playing possum.
look into getting training as a toolmaker, then work and earn money, buy ALL the books on gunsmithing u can get, and read them carefully. Do gun work in evnings, and work up a reputation. Boring advice, but ive done lots of mistakes, so u can have it for free! :)
I've been looking into getting a lathe for hobby work and I wanted to know what your opinion is of Grizzly gunsmithing lathes? Have you worked with them or know anyone who has?
The Grizzly lathes are not the quality that for example the Jets are. Jet has been in this country for some time and has a good parts backup where Grizzly does not. I would go with Jet as a starter unit.
you do realize that grizzly, jet, enco, and the Harbor freight lathes as well as a few others are all made by the same people and only have a small amount of differences in them
Yes, I understand that. But there still is alot of difference in quality between them in the ones that I have seen. For example the Grizzly is really bad unless they have improved some by now.
what lathe is being used I really like how it instantly stops. I have an enco 9x20 and it is a little better than the Harbor Freight but I just thought that it was the age of it they were built better when they still had us competition
I have a Clausing Lathe 14X40 It works well and is very accurate. I also have a second operations lathe which is a early Jet and that is a 13X36. The Clausing is used only for barrel work and smithing operations.
yeah I need a left handed bolt and it needs new threading

are you using loctite retainer to bond the sleeve to the bolt? Wont this bond be destroyed when you silver solder the handle back onto the bolt?
silver760 2 years ago
I use JB weld and have never had a sleeve come loose. The bolt handle is silver soldered on first and then the sleeve is glued onto the bolt body.

Sir,
I don't know what the laws are up there. I would think getting in contact with a smith would be a starting place.
