Wow, that is awesome to see that someone made a video of the U boats, Even if some of the units in there are Dash 7's, that's still close enough cause there aren't very many left
what memories ! , my brother and i would run to see these U-Boats come down the tracks . the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad , (P&LE) used the U25B units . the Chok-a-block thunder of the engines and smoke and some times sparks and flames made these a real sight to enjoy . i miss the Railroad and all the sights and sounds it offered . Ray in PA
@piesior I'm from Holland, it made me confused as well. Took me a while looking for the connection with German U-boats; Was it the appearance? The used diesel engines? It was just the U I think...(and a bit of resemblance maybe) We call the Citroen 2CV an "eend" that is duck instead of Escargot (snail) or deuche, and the DS a "snoek" (pike) instead of shark, tiburon, squalo, boca de sapo or padde . Often nicknames are not obvious to non natives. Greetings, Jan
The last U Boat I saw was a CSX MOW U boat in Charleston, WV sometime back in the late 90s. After that it was the Dash 7s and now the Dash 7s are starting to suffer the same fate as their predecessors
All time favorite: U36B. First Bicentenniel unit introduced was SCL 1776. They may have had their teething problems, but it seemed so cool how a pair of SCL U-36Bs could outpull a trio of GP40s. Yes, the EMDs had the "get up and go quickly" abilities, but when it came to yanking a 100 car drag freight out of a phosphate mine, those old U-Boats handled it well.
I miss seeing these lovely engines! When I went to high school, there was a rail line right next to the school, and every once in a while I would see some U-30B's pulling a coal train =) Everytime I was in class and I heard those U-30B's going by I got so excited to see them in action!
'Super 7s' are different locomotives. They looked nearly identical, but the dash-7 series was the replacement for the Universal series (1959-1977). Dash-7s were only produced from 1977-1985. Most 'U-boats' were gone from the class 1s by the 90s, Conrail had some until 2000. So they are different but look very similar.
I travel the whole country(truck driver) and see a few of these in south western US thou they are wearing the markings of Mexican railroads. Not a lot of time, but enough to make you smile.
Absolutely not. I've haven't seen it in probably 10 years. It's call 'Erie-Lackawanna Legacy' by Mark I Videos. They have a website and still sell it if you're really curious. I don't remember which volume (there's 3).
They used mostly E8's and Erie Stillwell coaches on the Port Jervis line until 1974 when most of the new equipment was in place. But the EL Push-Pull service ran in NJ before it made its way up to Port Jervis.
Interesting consist on that Port Jervis passenger train, with EL logo on front engine and a NJ Transit unit bringing up the rear. This was the first commuter line with push-pull service, starting with delivery of the black and silver NJ Transit coaches in 1971.
The Hoboken - Port Jervis commuter service didn't have the U34CH's and the Pullman-Standard Comet I coaches at first in 1971because the N.J.D.O.T. purchased them for the Erie Lackawanna to save the commuter service that the EL wanted to drop. All EL Commuter trains using the former Erie Mainline and the BCL terminated with the newer equipment at Suffern, NY just across the NJ/NY line and was used on the NY&NJ for the full route.
You'd be hard pressed to find many more U-boats in service in 2008. You can forget about class ones because they've scrapped their U-Boats. Branch line service on the other hand.. good luck!
Very true. These days it takes some luck just to find a Dash 7 in mainline service. At least they sound like U-Boats and are about 97% identical in appearance. ;-)
I own a copy of this video and I can attest to how interesting and entertaining it is. Any fan of GE locomotives, or vintage diesel locomotives of any kind, is sure to enjoy it.

Blueticecho, GE didn't stop making these units. Over the years GE progressed to the Dash7, the Dash 8, and the modern Dash 9 and GEVO units.

That proves that GEs can last longer if their is enough effort into rebuilding them.
kmothersil 11 months ago
@kmothersil
some of the u boat in Indonesia use AC to DC transmission (Class CC 204) road number 01-07 rebuild from U18C added them with Brightstar Sirius Dash-7.
road number 08- 26 was a brand new locomotive.
nowdays still total of 160 units of u boat with DC to DC transmisssion in operation.
and yes it is a durable and reliable Traction equipment, even at extreme condition
