  • Wow, that is awesome to see that someone made a video of the U boats, Even if some of the units in there are Dash 7's, that's still close enough cause there aren't very many left

  • csx has a few C40-8s roaming around

  • @alexander1485 C40-8's aren't U boats thought, but that would be a sight to see.

  • @railfanfromiantha true, but I just got off a train with a C40-8, CSXT 7645

  • what memories ! , my brother and i would run to see these U-Boats come down the tracks . the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad , (P&LE) used the U25B units . the Chok-a-block thunder of the engines and smoke and some times sparks and flames made these a real sight to enjoy . i miss the Railroad and all the sights and sounds it offered . • In Perú there was many "Uboats"

  • Why U-Boat Survivors ?

  • @piesior U as in (General Electric) Universal series built 1956 to 1998 still running maybe?

  • @Jan621117 I'm from UK,for me it's not so obvious.

  • @piesior I'm from Holland, it made me confused as well. Took me a while looking for the connection with German U-boats; Was it the appearance? The used diesel engines? It was just the U I think...(and a bit of resemblance maybe) We call the Citroen 2CV an "eend" that is duck instead of Escargot (snail) or deuche, and the DS a "snoek" (pike) instead of shark, tiburon, squalo, boca de sapo or padde . Often nicknames are not obvious to non natives. Greetings, Jan

  • the good old days before crap gevos came into existence............

  • cool,..here in indonesia using that engines to be prime over....

  • cool,..here in indonesia using that enginee to be primeover....

  • sounds like my votech ventilation lol

  • 3:12 what type of horn is that? It sounds extremely familiar!

  • @OdaConnProductions it has a Leslie RS-3L

  • long live the GE's!

  • TTI still has U-boats

  • Are the 2 Squaw Creek UBoats still around since the coal mine has stopped producing?

  • @generationll I dont think so.

  • What kind of horn does P&W 1801 have?

  • @Mcoov That's a Leslie RS-3L horn.

  • hey thats a prime 920 on the bn unit on the beginning

  • Comment removed

  • TTI!!!!

  • BEST LESLIE RS3L at 3:09!!!!

  • i would love to get behind the throttle of a u25b/c in an all ge u boat consist. that for me would be cool.

  • They are but railfans apply the term to General Electric's Universal series diesels as well

  • U-Boats are awesome! I have an HO Scale model of a Seaboard Coastline U30B.

  • The last U Boat I saw was a CSX MOW U boat in Charleston, WV sometime back in the late 90s. After that it was the Dash 7s and now the Dash 7s are starting to suffer the same fate as their predecessors

  • now thier all in mexico

  • All time favorite: U36B. First Bicentenniel unit introduced was SCL 1776. They may have had their teething problems, but it seemed so cool how a pair of SCL U-36Bs could outpull a trio of GP40s. Yes, the EMDs had the "get up and go quickly" abilities, but when it came to yanking a 100 car drag freight out of a phosphate mine, those old U-Boats handled it well.

  • u18b...my favourite

  • 3:00

  • I think G E stop making these units because theres more money in making War- Heads...................

  • Blueticecho, GE didn't stop making these units. Over the years GE progressed to the Dash7, the Dash 8, and the modern Dash 9 and GEVO units.

  • I like the U50s, even though I never saw them.

  • That is a nice chugging sound

  • COst of the video?

  • Check the website. Right now they are selling many VHS tapes for $9.95.

  • I remember the day when BN used U boats for coal.. Was cool watching them take off black smoke everywhere! Sure miss the sounds of them..

  • wow man....

    i tell you what..

if you want to see U-boat for the next 50 years

    come to my country

here in Indonesia the state railways use U-boat as their Main Fleet of locomotive

    from U18A1A , U18C, U20C, C20EMP, U18MMi

and still pulls all kind of train till this day

    Cheers

  • @cc201135

That proves that GEs can last longer if their is enough effort into rebuilding them.

  • @kmothersil

some of the u boat in Indonesia use AC to DC transmission (Class CC 204) road number 01-07 rebuild from U18C added them with Brightstar Sirius Dash-7.

road number 08- 26 was a brand new locomotive.

nowdays still total of 160 units of u boat with DC to DC transmisssion in operation.

and yes it is a durable and reliable Traction equipment, even at extreme condition

  • @cc201135

That's some good information to hear.

  • I Like The R&N U-Boat.

  • I miss seeing these lovely engines! When I went to high school, there was a rail line right next to the school, and every once in a while I would see some U-30B's pulling a coal train =) Everytime I was in class and I heard those U-30B's going by I got so excited to see them in action!

  • you lucky bastard, i live in NJ and i didnt know about it.

  • i have this video, it's excellent. i'm glad all the u-boats and dash sevens are still racking up the miles in mexico, china and estonia.

  • i road on that njt train

  • omg! these tracks ... especially in the end, the crews must get seasick of them

  • gotta love that horn at the beginning

  • Are the Squaw Creek Southern U33C's still in operation?

  • didnt these antiques live on as super 7's Or was that in the 90's

  • 'Super 7s' are different locomotives. They looked nearly identical, but the dash-7 series was the replacement for the Universal series (1959-1977). Dash-7s were only produced from 1977-1985. Most 'U-boats' were gone from the class 1s by the 90s, Conrail had some until 2000. So they are different but look very similar.

  • I travel the whole country(truck driver) and see a few of these in south western US thou they are wearing the markings of Mexican railroads. Not a lot of time, but enough to make you smile.

  • The video does discuss the U50s and has some photos, but no video footage, unfortunately.

  • I've only seen one movie clip of a U50, it was still a demonstrator for GE running on the Erie-Lackawanna in New York.

  • Wow, that must have been a sight! I don't suppose that movie clip is available online...?

  • Absolutely not. I've haven't seen it in probably 10 years. It's call 'Erie-Lackawanna Legacy' by Mark I Videos. They have a website and still sell it if you're really curious. I don't remember which volume (there's 3).

  • They used mostly E8's and Erie Stillwell coaches on the Port Jervis line until 1974 when most of the new equipment was in place. But the EL Push-Pull service ran in NJ before it made its way up to Port Jervis.

  • now that's what a locomotive is supposed to sound like!!!

  • i do agree but, nothing compares to a LaGrange built EMD Locomotive in run 8!!!!!!!!!

  • Interesting consist on that Port Jervis passenger train, with EL logo on front engine and a NJ Transit unit bringing up the rear. This was the first commuter line with push-pull service, starting with delivery of the black and silver NJ Transit coaches in 1971.

  • The Hoboken - Port Jervis commuter service didn't have the U34CH's and the Pullman-Standard Comet I coaches at first in 1971because the N.J.D.O.T. purchased them for the Erie Lackawanna to save the commuter service that the EL wanted to drop. All EL Commuter trains using the former Erie Mainline and the BCL terminated with the newer equipment at Suffern, NY just across the NJ/NY line and was used on the NY&NJ for the full route.

  • I have the VHS copy- great tape. Worth every cent.

  • You'd be hard pressed to find many more U-boats in service in 2008. You can forget about class ones because they've scrapped their U-Boats. Branch line service on the other hand.. good luck!

  • Very true. These days it takes some luck just to find a Dash 7 in mainline service. At least they sound like U-Boats and are about 97% identical in appearance. ;-)

  • U-Boats have nice horns. Good camera work!

  • Excellent Job Pentrex!! Some nice horns on those U-Boats!!

  • This DVD should be on the website today, even be on sale

  • Hey Pentrex,great job and awesome choice!!(U-Boat)

    JPilot2 :)

  • I own a copy of this video and I can attest to how interesting and entertaining it is. Any fan of GE locomotives, or vintage diesel locomotives of any kind, is sure to enjoy it.

  • nice shot at the Blue Mountain & Reading.

  • Great Job Pentrex! Good Choice!
