What is sad is that England stood almost alone against Germany and helped win the war for freedom, democracy and the chance to be free. Today, like most of Europe, it has become a socialist liberal country near economic collapse . America is following rapidly in its footsteps. I wonder now if all those lives we're wasted. What would all those dead veterans think of today's England and America?
The first simple, two-pole magnetron was developed in 1920 by Albert Hull multi-cavity resonant magnetron had been developed and patented in 1935 by Hans Hollmann in Berlin
In 1940, at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, John Randall and Harry Boot produced a working prototype similar to Hollman's cavity magnetron, but added liquid cooling and a stronger cavity. Randall and Boot soon managed to increase its power output 100 fold.
Instead of abandoning the magnetron due to its frequency instability (which is what the Germans did), they (Randall and Boot) sampled the output signal and synchronized their receiver to whatever frequency was actually being generated. In 1941, the problem of frequency instability was solved (by the Brits) by coupling alternate cavities within the magnetron.
Even as an 18 year old boy in 2011, my heart fills with pride everytime i see the glorious sight of a spitfire, there is nothing quite like the feeling of seeing one of Englands most iconic achievements :)
You are no doubt referring to the wonderful American lend lease programme whereby Britain was able to rack up huge debts all of which were repaid in full with interest, the last payment being made in 2005.
We were not given them or loaned them we had to pay for them albeit payment was deferred.
It has been said by many that what really swung it - other than the courage of the pilots - was British pre-war planning and professionalism. A sharp contrast to Goering's romantic belief in the superior fighting prowess of the teutonic warrior. He expected a rout and had no new ideas or back up infrastructure to support and supply his airforce when he didn't get one.
ekuthenewble - against my better judgement I must comment... clearly you know little of history or aviation. The RAF didn't 'simply' do anything. It was a hard won battle; brave young men of both sides were lost . Its a well known fact that the victor writes history, and that's one of the reasons I prefer to read German accounts of the battle. However, to suggest the the RAF had 'home field advantage' and they used bases 'outside the 109's range' is grossly simplistic.
Thank Olfux you for this interesting documentary. Certainly fighter planes and their pilots played an important role during the Battle of Britain. In the end it was the decisions taken by their commanders that decided the result of the battle, in one side Fighter Command Chief Air Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding and Reichmarschall Hermann Goering in the other.
A truely British effort Designer of Spitfire English,Winston Churchill English Sir Hugh Dowding Scottish Sir Robert Watson Watt (Inventor Radar)Scottish, and not to mention New Zelander Keith Park.
lol the germans demonstated one a month before the brits, and the US 5 or so months before the germans (but the US one was very primative and used as surface to surface)
I say what is true, whether it is popular or not :)
@notsureyou Listen! me old shitter Scotsman Robert Watson Watt Invented Radar and the Cavity Magnatron was another massive British breakthrough for Radar Technology and when given to the Yanks they thought it was one of the biggest breakthroughs ever.Remember Great Britain has the two best inventive nations on earth. England and Scotland.
As early as 1886, Heinrich Hertz showed that radio waves could be reflected from solid objects.
In 1895 Alexander Popov, a physics instructor at the Imperial Russian Navy school in Kronstadt, developed an apparatus using a coherer tube for detecting distant lightning strikes. The next year, he added a spark-gap transmitter
During 1897, while testing this in communicating between two ships in the Baltic Sea, he took note of an interference beat caused by the passage of a third vessel. In his report, Popov wrote that this phenomenon might be used for detecting objects, but he did nothing more with this observation
The German Christian Huelsmeyer was the first to use radio waves to detect "the presence of distant metallic objects". In 1904 he demonstrated the feasibility of detecting a ship in dense fog, but not its distance. He received Reichspatent Nr. 165546 for his detection device in April 1904
and later patent 169154 for a related amendment for also determining the distance to the ship. He also received a British patent on September 23, 1904 for the first full Radar application, which he called telemobiloscope
Old chap, at some point you are going to have to realise that not everything was invented by the Britts :)
Alot of inventions cannot be put down to one person. One person may prove it, another will take the results and from their own view point (different thinking) make it better, or even come up with a massive break through. Just like with the cavity magnetron that you mentioned.
Ah yes, that bit around 6:38 where the Germans claimed they shot down over 3,000 British airplanes ...
last night I was reading a library book on The Blitz. This is not an exact quotation, but Adolf said to Hermann - You seem to have shot down more airplanes than the RAF ever possessed!
Hermann promised that his Luftwaffe would defeat Britain, but that didn't happen.
After the war, he was tried as a war criminal and sentenced to be executed. But he left early by taking a cyanide capsule.
@AppleSouffle the germans even today cannot stand to admit that the raf was far better then the lufwaffe the spit was the bedt fighter it was out numbered four to one
the german pilots were battle hardened and the raf still won thea speake volumes
LW had same amount of fighters with the RAF. RAF had GCI system and home field advantage: the 109 could only fly to North London. RAF simply used bases outside the 109s' operational range, and was still able to hit the bombers. As you know, most of Britains industry, and therefore the targets the LW wanted to hit, we not between London and Dover.
LW had superior(against Hurri) or equal(Spit) fighters, superior tactics and training. Without fighter range, they achieved same the RAF did 40-43.
@tomato6999 "the germans even today cannot stand to admit that the raf was far better then the lufwaffe the spit was the bedt fighter it was out numbered four to one"
That's because it's absolute rubbish. The Germans were better trained. The British had the advantage of a home game. The aircraft, while very different, were remarkably equal.
@bmused55: I can´t deny cherry picking statistics. Sure, fightercommand had only half size of two german airfleets, but this was compensated by the home advantage. And bombercommand? on vacation? or fighting on a different planet?
some more facts: between juli and oktober ´40 Britain lost 1034 fighters (631 Hurricanes and 403 Spitfires) and Germany 845 (610 Bf109 and 235 Bf 110). and: during the whole war bombercommand had higher losses than fightercommand, during the battle of britain too.
I was shocked at how low the aircrew losses were compared to Bomber Command losses later in the war. During the massive raids it was not unusual to lose 500 aircrew in one night.
roughly was US Marines total Casualties was 75,000 men..... USAAF was 78,000 men.....RAF Bomber command over 80,000.....only German submarine corps had worse....
I get the impression that EasyYankDick thinks Americans are a "species" as he said, not an accumulation of immegrants from many of the countries he thinks he is superior than. Bet he lives in a trailer and bangs his sister!!
Having had plenty to do with both Americans and the English, I must say Americans are very poor Humans in comparison to the English, and the Idea of an American being Humble and considerate....well now we know you have no idea.
Russell was born in New Zealand, but we forgive him for that, Nicole is a red head and as they say "Better of dead than red" and she married that retard tom, Kate well she is OK, My type of Aussie was Steve Irwin. (R.I.P) and if there is one thing you must learn about Australians is Culture can GET STUFFED, we are convict stock.
Compared with Americans, yes. Compared with English, Americans are more considerate, generally better looking and more humble - just kinder and better folk.
TheXXXXBitter: just ignore him. Easy is a well known lying troll whos whole schtick is to go on WWII site and try and stir up a ruckus with his made up BS.
The Spitfire was real purdy, but not a serious fighting plane. The war was won at Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Midway, not a dinky little battles like this.
If the Battle of Britain was lost, then Germany would have struggled to go any further. They still had to contend with the navy and the Scottish part of the airforce. Even if Britain was conquered, the Germans would have left the USA alone. There is no way at all that the Germans could ever beat the USA in any battle. Their fleet was non existant and would have been entirely sunk.
Given that USA would have been left alone, Europe and Africa would have been definitely lost. without England there´s no platform for strategic bombing, this means no freedom from the nazi regime, resulting in USA alone on the other side of the ocean. I cannot tell what the destiny of Russia could have been, but I don´t want to think what could have happened in the following years with the oncoming nuclear power! I deeply respect all those that contributed to the end of the war!
Disagree. Africa lost? Do you know how big Africa is? I am sure that Germany wouldn't have invaded anyone else. India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and of course Africa (Rhodesia and South Africa) were too far away. We are really only talking about the destiny of Britain here.
Even the invasion of England itself could have been and endless struggle, the point is how much longer would the war have gone on? I really don´t see how it could have been shortened by loosing another country. People were dying in europe during nazi occupation, go tell them it was just about Britain, go tell my grandparents or those that made it out of the concentration camps alive
voodish. I am only talking about the Battle of Britain here. Naturally in the overall scheme of things, it was small. A lot of countries came to help out Britain. If it was beaten, they would have gone back home, and a lot of the British higher ups would have relocated to the United States.
Sure. Mine was a remark to a statement, which I´d rather not comment, about the IIWW being won at Guadalcal, Iwo Jima and Midway. Yes it was, on the pacific theather, against an enemy whose influence on the european side was still present, but uncomparable to the nazi reality. Comparing the BoB to a "dinky little battle" is not far from saying that El Alamein, Kursk and Stalingrad were irrelevant.
OK. I agree these other battles were big, like Kursk etc. The thing is that people in Europe often don't understand that the Pacific theater was huge. The European theater determined the outcome in Europe, the smallest continent. The Pacific war determined the fate of Asia, the Americas and Australian. This is a much much bigger population and area.
The death toll in Europe was over 40 milions, of which 12 milions from the nazi atrocities. In Asia 30 milions people died, of which 20 milions caused by Japanese occupation of China since 1937. Huge numbers that left a deep mark... I don´t want to judge about this or that theather.
voodish. I think we can concentrate on numbers killed too much. The thing is that European Commanders tended to descend into wars of attrition, thinking you win by the numbers you kill. The US objective is to win the war, and then fix everything - they are much more into surgical strikes. That way, the enemy can surrender without being killed. When the Americans came, the war changed in Europe. The US detailed planning made the diff. They took millions of prisoners instead of killing them.
I´m really greateful for the american effort to end WWII and I don´t even dare to criticize the drop of the two A-bombs, which is often source of debate.I think we´re veering away from the point that started this discussion. Better end it here
voodish. I think we pretty much agree. WW2 is a complex subject. To me, it was when humanity went crazy. I do not blame any one nation. It was nationlism gone mad, and they were all at it. The smart ones were countries like Sweden and Switzerland which stayed out of it. I sincerely hope that countries like Russia, Germany and Japan have learnt their lesson. Let the USA and Britain continue the fighting now. They still need education. :)
Ok, we agree on that! Unfortunately the new generations are much likely to loose the meaning of what happened back then, it´s just the past that they´ve never experienced... hopefully they´ll get the education they need without more bloody events.
Unfortunately the old generation didn't learn either. The last time Britain lost heavily was in WW1. The USA has to go back to the ACW for real losses. Only the South knows the bitterness of defeat. The people in the Northern States have never tasted it. Britain also has never been defeated. Only by defeat like Russia, Germany, Italy, Japan and the Southern States of the US have gone through can you learn.
"The USA has to go back to the ACW for real losses. Only the South knows the bitterness of defeat. The people in the Northern States have never tasted it"
The US objective is to win the war, and then fix everything - they are much more into surgical strikes. That way, the enemy can surrender without being killed"
You talk total shit!! The yanks are brave men but just fired at everything!
paddy. The English are the ones known for straffing their allies. They were always arrogant and didn't care. The Americans always treated their allies with respect, not and "colonials" and worse (various racist terms).
No, paddy. Its true My father was staffed by them - the English. They lost around 200 men. It was the worst disaster suffered by his unit.
You wonder why I cant stand your arrogance. YOU are the troll - and I mean it. You are the first person I have ever called a troll. You vicious pig!!! You horrible nasty cur!!!
The English couldn't give a stuff about their allies. TRUTH. The Americans do.
I know what my father told me. everyone knows the score. The English are snobs and callous. You are typical of the English. People are afraid of your country, as you are so powerful. I am not. I stick up to you English bullies. The Americans are decent and polite people who are better than others but don't think it. The English are proven liars like you.
Yes. It does hurt me that people believe this. The truth is that the non-English were the key people won the battle. All the English did was play politics and take all the credit. Example of the heroes were Brand (South African), Dowding (Scottish), Park (New Zealand). The politicians were English, like Leigh Mallory who was jealous of the non English.
'EasyCompanyAirborne' - just remind us all of the nationality of Battle of Britain aces Douglas Bader, Teddy' Donaldson, Johnnie Johnson, Robert Stanford Tuck, Geoffrey Page, Al Deere, Peter Townsend and Brian Kingcome????
It's OK Easy, you're an Americunt therefore have had you're head filled with bullshit since day one - we understand and you have our sympathies.
reading your comments, it's clear you've got shit for brains pal!
Your complete revisionist take on History reads like something out of a North Korean school textbook! It's pricks like you who make the US the laughing stock of the world. Do your country and the rest of the world a favour and chop your fingers off, because you've clearly demonstrated that nothing of any truth, value or worth will ever be typed by them on here or anywhere.
Phoenix. Sorry. There is nothing revisionist at all. At the time, India and Pakistan were in the same country as India. Both parts helped in the war effort. Go display your ignorance elsewhere.
"Pacific theater was huge. The Pacific war determined the fate of Asia, the Americas and Australian"
Yes and it was india who did the most fighting and The yanks who made films saying how they done it on their own
the Indian Army became the largest all-volunteer force in history, rising to over 2.5 million men These forces included tank, artillery and airborne forces. Indian soldiers earned 30 Victoria Crosses during the Second World War.
The Indians did do a lot. Please include the Pakistanis also. They won 30 VCs. Let me point out that the brave men from America won far more Medals of Honor, a medal only given to heroes. The most famous MOH hero was Douglas MacArthur, the man who saved the Phillipines.
As for Vietnam, the US won this one. The North Vietnamese were pummeled into submission. They eventually agreed to the Paris peace agreement, brokered by the Americans who are lovers of peace.
paddy. You are the fool. I said to include Pakistan, as people forget they helped. Everyone knows there was no Pakistan then as a political country. You are displaying your narrow minded ignorance.
I said to include Pakistan, as people forget they helped. You are displaying your narrow minded ignorance."
No the ignorance is yours!!
You fucking retard how can you include something that did not exist as a political country OR as a people thats like saying thanks to Americans for their part in the norman invasion in 1066 as down the line their off spring will settle there! you retard!
As I wasn't born I'm not sure how I could do either thing, though I do have some very lovely German collaegues. I assume you are intent on intimidating people into not replying so that you can 'win' - surely it is bullying that the British went to war to stop. Oh and by the way - I believe that 'retard' as an insult is an American expression - maybe it would me more patriotic to call people 'Divs' - just a thought. By the way this is lots of fun please try to reply when you calm down a bit ; )
Oh I've upset you now havn't I - I realy don't want the last word knowing that you are still so angry and foulmouthed but maybe I would have to wait a very long time for you to behave decently in that way. Anyway if it is the last word no hard feelings from Scandinavia and say high to your mum from me next time you see her ;-) you could show her your Youtube comments too if your proud of them.
Knew there was still some spark in you ! Like the troll thing. I'm not sure you have quite understood why I got involved. I got involved because I thought it was a shame that people abuse each other so aggessively particularly over something so important as BofB. I respect your knowledge of the battle & EasyCo does seem badly out of his depth but I don't think he deserves abuse and I don't think it does you any good to get so worked up. Have a nice Sunday. Peace lol
Sure I get lots of comments from people like you. You are a racist. Your hatred of Islamic people means that you give no homage to them for helping out. The Pakistanis did contribute. They were part of India at the time. The people did exist. You would no doubt prefer they didn't. You are not ignorant. You are a clever racist - but a racist nevertheless. Everyone knows it.
Good, paddy. So why are you saying stupid things like Pakistanis not existing. We all know that Pakistan did not come into existence until after 1947. People often forget that Pakistanis fought in WW2, but under the Indian flag at that time.
Personally id thank the russians before the yanks for their contributions during the war. All the yanks were good for was cannon fodder on omaha beach. I personally loved the american movie road to burma, as far as im aware the yanks never set foot in burma didnt stop them making a movie claiming they were there though. Next they will be stating corsairs fought in the BoB.
fucking self praising yanks saved noone. Britain ensured it would never be invaded all on its own.
@grim0033 416,800 U.S. dead in WW2 tells a different story. The Americans didn't just show up on Omaha and die, they contrinuted 70% of the manpower and equipment for the whole European war after D Day. In the late 30's the German army trained in Russia and the German tanks and aircraft which overran Europe in 1940 were running on Russian oil. Russia also invaded Poland simultaneously with Germany in 1940. Yes Burma was a British/Indian effort but not relevant to the outcome of WW2.
@PimplyButtcheeks: "416,800 U.S. dead in WW2 tells a different story" - yep it sure does. You realise that the Soviets lost nearly a million in the battle of Stalingrad alone right, and over 500,000 just crossing the Oder into Germany?
For every single US soldier who was killed in WWII, the Soviets lost EIGHTY! And yet I've yet to see a single Russian on here acting like a prissy whiny bitch & going on about how they supposedly won WWII on their own, and yet yanks always do!
@Pheonixfromtheshale Agree with almost everything you say. I'm well aware of the huge Soviet contribution. (Also aware that they collaborated with the Nazis in jointly invading Poland, and therefore giving Hitler the confidence to trigger WW2). Agree about the distorted impression many (not all!) present day Americans have, and I dislike the crappy Hollywood re-writes of history. But a crap movie is a just crap movie, it doesn't outweigh the sacrifice of the 416000.
@Pheonixfromtheshale Also mate don't give me a hard time about my profile, if its a bit vague thats because I mainly use it to have fun with the Neo Nazi trolls who get on these ww2 vids.
@grim0033 416,800 U.S. dead in WW2 tells a different story. @Phobos1960 Sure, I mean the US is the one starting all the wars, and it is the US that the world hates. Terrorism against Britain is a by product of the US/UK alliance, so it works out better for us. Besides the EU is a lot more powerful than you porky yanks. Besides, you faggots only joined in the war because the Japs bombed you and the Germans declared war on you. You never helped out on any basis of morality so get the fuck off your high horse.
@grim0033 What a pathetic little moron you are...if you had a brain, you'd be dangerous...I hate to think, what the future holds for the human race, if they are all going to be as insecure as you...
@davelj1941 Is that so? What exactly have I said that qualifies me as a moron? Nothing I have said is incorrect, and your response seems to be sparked by your own nationalistic insecurities pal. The U.S. IS the biggest aggressor nation in the world, it even manipulates it's own *cough* allies. Try looking up a book and or a movie called 'The Eagle and the Snowman', or investigating why the French pulled out of NATO for a while... thats right the US threatened to destroy UK and French currency.
@grim0033 We've done some dumb things no doubt... but so has every other great power in history. I'm not refering to Austraila mind you as they've never been a great power, just a good cog in the allied machine. At least we never occupy other nations without the plan of giving them back. Hitler had no intention of doing this and the Soviet Union only did it when they couldn't afford to keep everything afloat.
@grim0033 Oh? The U.S. started WWI? WWII? More accurate to say the world hates the most powerful nation. That's just human nature. Remember when the world hated the British? And yup.. it took some prodding for us to involve ourselves with another European war after WWI.. being attacked was the prodding. Before that, don't forget about lend lease. Without it, those that held out against the Germans might not have. Your attitude is a bit down under. Australian? lol
@uknews Not quite. There's the whole accuracy thing and the North Koreans are still way behind. If they were to attempt to hit one of our beaches, I'd be worried no matter what beach I was on in the world. Then there's the matter of how much damage can they inflict? We could obliterate them many times over. The thought is total madness though, and I find it amazing that we all haven't blown ourselves up already. I hope we never do. It'd be so useless..
@grim0033 I'll agree that Americans can be embarrassingly self praising. I heard of a guy who traveled to Europe with a shirt that said, "Got Freedom? Thank America". Can you imagine?
But America's ace card was it's industrial power and skill. This was where America really kicked ass over everyone else at the time. At one point, America produced more war material than the rest of the world combined. Japan, for instance, lost the war the moment she started it. She never stood a chance.
@ronpaul2008rocks It's true - that's why Roosevelt forced Germany into declaring war by provoking him. No idea why Roosevelt didn't just come out honestly and declare war? I guess he wanted to keep his options open while rearming Britain ended the Depression in the States.
@grim0033 I wouldn't, they the soviet russia devided the europe between nazi germany in a so called secret part of the molotov ribbentrop agreement. Thus beginning the ww2! When poland was attacked by germany and finland by soviets. :L
@grim0033 I guess maybe you overlooked the other facts, spare parts, complete aircraft, tanks, trucks, tools, machinery, and MONEY that was LOANED to bloody ole' England. Let's not forget the the Canadian, Polish, and Americans (among others) who flew alongside their British brothers during the BoB. Let's be adults and present accurate facts to the trolls here, shall we? Thank you.
con. Don't make me laugh. The MOH is the highest medal you can be awarded. What General not involved in combat was ever awarded the MOH? What you say is rubbish.
The American people and the President are simple God fearing folk. All they want is to make the streets safe for wee animals, and mothers and babies.
Now hear this!
While US citizens are a simple folk, they are also the most intelligent species on the planet. Candidate! Did you know that 82 percent of the top Universities are in the US, and of the top 100 people in history, 89 are Americans.
"...for gallant defense against a tremendous superiority of enemy forces in men and arms. His utter disregard of personal danger under heavy fire and aerial bombardment, his calm judgment in each crisis, inspired his troops, galvanized the spirit of resistance of the Filipino people, and confirmed the faith of the American people in their Armed Forces. "
This brings tears to my eyes!!
He was subjected to "heavy fire and aerial bombardment". Better than a VC!
Finally the idiot realises he is wrong, and my point stands a General wins the highest bravery award LOL, don't worry about the troops in the front line facing the enemy face to face and then spending the rest of the war as a POW of the japs...unlike MacArthur.
con. Most people do not survive under "heavy fire and aerial bombardment". You said that MacArthur was not in combat. You could not be more wrong, and you know it.
Many VC winners were only subjected to light arms fire. Heavy fire is something else. Under aerial bombardment, nothing survives. MacArthur sustained both!! I can hardly believe a man can be so brave.
So, in place of name calling, name your general not involved in combat who gained the MOH. English! Sheesh!
Many VC winners were only subjected to light arms fire,,,LOL now I get to say "What you say is rubbish" but again we don't expect much else from a wannabe soldier, the Queen of England was under Aerial bombardment in WW2 as a child along with much of the English population,, truly shows what a hero MacArthur was.
He was near some artillery fire and some air attacks the same could be said of practically any front line soldier in any theatre of was are they all worthy of there countrys highest award?,it was a politically motivated award same as Nixons Silver Star was . You can cry about it as much as you want but thats the truth of the matter .
No just well connected enough to gain two service stars without actually seeing any actual combat . Nothing wrong with serving behind the scenes but a bit distasteful to gain decorations that you haven't earned .
'The Silver Star is a medal given for courage' - Okay then brainiac...tell me precisely WHAT feats of courage did Richard Nixon perform in WWII to earn them?
I didn't know it takes courage to run a Navy supply and logistics store on a pacific island, and you get a medal for it!?
iroscoe mentioned that Nixon got the Silver Star. You will have to ask him. I do know that Nixon volunteered for duty, even though he was entitled to be exempted. After many years service in WW2, this brave man with many military citations and awards was promoted to a very high rank in the USN.
I think that although the Battle of Britain was a small battle compared to others it turned out to be very important, because we were not invaded Britain was used as a base for the American forces and the subsequent D-day invasion, if we were invaded would the US have entered the war in Europe?
lol, and the american fellt was uber awesome, they lost most of it in the battle for midaw, and in pearl harbour, they had about 400 ships left, the crew cabins were overcrowded. the only thing america has in terms of military ordinance is numbers. its true, look at britain and germany, such small armies, but they went around the world and were victorious too many time to be considered tiny. numbers dont compare to bravery and honour my friend.
The USA power comes from large numbers this is true. The only good thing about the USA is that in the end they took sides with the UK and not Germany.
Apparently, Field Marshal von Runstedt, when questioned by the Russians in his cell at Nürmberg as to what he considered the turning point of the war , disappointed them by not saying it was Stalingrad but the Battle of Britain. I believe it.
What many people miss in this statement is a simple yet vital fact.
Had Germany won the BOB, or the British sued for peace, Germany would have been fighting a one front war. Meaning no tanks, aircraft, or troops lost in Africa. Much smaller casualties in Greece, and the many other things that would have changed the situation for the Eastern front.
no it wasnt, that was the turning point in the battle of the atlantic, not the turning point in the war, this battle was the FIRST major victory against the nazi threat. europe owes the common wealth and the U.K alot for not simply giving up lkike the french (not being rude, i swear, but they surrendered.) do you think america would of stood a chance against the british fleet (which was the biggest in the world, and still is) under navy control, also the troops from russia if they were defeated
Kaboom. The important war was fought between the US and Japan. They were number 1 and 2. Japan conquered China in 1937. Do you think they were pushovers? No! You are right on one point. The Germans could never hope to beat Britain and the Commonwealth. Australia, Canada, South Africa and India were large countries, not to mention Rhodesia and New Zealand, which also had big forces.
Churchill: Hitler knows he has to break the people of this island, or lose the war."

ekuthenewble - against my better judgement I must comment... clearly you know little of history or aviation.

In the end it was the decisions taken by their commanders that decided the result of the battle, in one side Fighter Command Chief Air Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding and Reichmarschall Hermann Goering in the other.

you mean the inventor of the radar used by the Brits?
Since the Germans (Heinrich Hetz) showed in 1886 that radio waves could be reflected by solid objects.

lol the germans demonstated one a month before the brits, and the US 5 or so months before the germans (but the US one was very primative and used as surface to surface)

YARROWS 5 months ago
@YARROWS
ROFL......
The next year, he added a spark-gap transmitter
notsureyou 5 months ago
During 1897, while testing this in communicating between two ships in the Baltic Sea, he took note of an interference beat caused by the passage of a third vessel. In his report, Popov wrote that this phenomenon might be used for detecting objects, but he did nothing more with this observation
notsureyou 5 months ago
The German Christian Huelsmeyer was the first to use radio waves to detect "the presence of distant metallic objects". In 1904 he demonstrated the feasibility of detecting a ship in dense fog, but not its distance. He received Reichspatent Nr. 165546 for his detection device in April 1904
notsureyou 5 months ago
and later patent 169154 for a related amendment for also determining the distance to the ship.

Just like with the cavity magnetron that you mentioned.
notsureyou 5 months ago
Ah yes, that bit around 6:38 where the Germans claimed they shot down over 3,000 British airplanes ...
last night I was reading a library book on The Blitz. This is not an exact quotation, but Adolf said to Hermann - You seem to have shot down more airplanes than the RAF ever possessed!
Hermann promised that his Luftwaffe would defeat Britain, but that didn't happen.
After the war, he was tried as a war criminal and sentenced to be executed. But he left early by taking a cyanide capsule.

That's because it's absolute rubbish. The Germans were better trained. The British had the advantage of a home game. The aircraft, while very different, were remarkably equal.
Camerameister1 3 months ago
@bmused55: I can´t deny cherry picking statistics. Sure, fightercommand had only half size of two german airfleets, but this was compensated by the home advantage. And bombercommand? on vacation? or fighting on a different planet?

some more facts: between juli and oktober ´40 Britain lost 1034 fighters (631 Hurricanes and 403 Spitfires) and Germany 845 (610 Bf109 and 235 Bf 110). and: during the whole war bombercommand had higher losses than fightercommand, during the battle of britain too.

Dinky little battle !!! What an idiot you are. The spitfire is the best fighter plane ever built.
If the Battle of Britain had been lost then you'd be speaking German now and the USA would be under Nazi occupation.
westcoastusa 2 years ago
If the Battle of Britain was lost, then Germany would have struggled to go any further. They still had to contend with the navy and the Scottish part of the airforce. Even if Britain was conquered, the Germans would have left the USA alone. There is no way at all that the Germans could ever beat the USA in any battle. Their fleet was non existant and would have been entirely sunk.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Given that USA would have been left alone, Europe and Africa would have been definitely lost. without England there´s no platform for strategic bombing, this means no freedom from the nazi regime, resulting in USA alone on the other side of the ocean. I cannot tell what the destiny of Russia could have been, but I don´t want to think what could have happened in the following years with the oncoming nuclear power! I deeply respect all those that contributed to the end of the war!
voodish2 2 years ago
Disagree. Africa lost? Do you know how big Africa is? I am sure that Germany wouldn't have invaded anyone else. India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and of course Africa (Rhodesia and South Africa) were too far away. We are really only talking about the destiny of Britain here.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Even the invasion of England itself could have been and endless struggle, the point is how much longer would the war have gone on? I really don´t see how it could have been shortened by loosing another country. People were dying in europe during nazi occupation, go tell them it was just about Britain, go tell my grandparents or those that made it out of the concentration camps alive
voodish2 2 years ago
voodish. I am only talking about the Battle of Britain here. Naturally in the overall scheme of things, it was small. A lot of countries came to help out Britain. If it was beaten, they would have gone back home, and a lot of the British higher ups would have relocated to the United States.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Sure. Mine was a remark to a statement, which I´d rather not comment, about the IIWW being won at Guadalcal, Iwo Jima and Midway. Yes it was, on the pacific theather, against an enemy whose influence on the european side was still present, but uncomparable to the nazi reality. Comparing the BoB to a "dinky little battle" is not far from saying that El Alamein, Kursk and Stalingrad were irrelevant.
voodish2 2 years ago 2
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
The death toll in Europe was over 40 milions, of which 12 milions from the nazi atrocities. In Asia 30 milions people died, of which 20 milions caused by Japanese occupation of China since 1937. Huge numbers that left a deep mark... I don´t want to judge about this or that theather.
voodish2 2 years ago 2
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
I´m really greateful for the american effort to end WWII and I don´t even dare to criticize the drop of the two A-bombs, which is often source of debate.I think we´re veering away from the point that started this discussion. Better end it here
voodish2 2 years ago
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Ok, we agree on that! Unfortunately the new generations are much likely to loose the meaning of what happened back then, it´s just the past that they´ve never experienced... hopefully they´ll get the education they need without more bloody events.
voodish2 2 years ago
Unfortunately the old generation didn't learn either. The last time Britain lost heavily was in WW1. The USA has to go back to the ACW for real losses. Only the South knows the bitterness of defeat. The people in the Northern States have never tasted it. Britain also has never been defeated. Only by defeat like Russia, Germany, Italy, Japan and the Southern States of the US have gone through can you learn.

The U.S. IS the biggest aggressor nation in the world, it even manipulates it's own *cough* allies. Try looking up a book and or a movie called 'The Eagle and the Snowman', or investigating why the French pulled out of NATO for a while... thats right the US threatened to destroy UK and French currency.
grim0033 1 year ago
@grim0033 We've done some dumb things no doubt... but so has every other great power in history. I'm not refering to Austraila mind you as they've never been a great power, just a good cog in the allied machine. At least we never occupy other nations without the plan of giving them back. Hitler had no intention of doing this and the Soviet Union only did it when they couldn't afford to keep everything afloat.
JaleelJohanson62 1 year ago
@grim0033 Oh? The U.S. started WWI? WWII? More accurate to say the world hates the most powerful nation. That's just human nature. Remember when the world hated the British? And yup.. it took some prodding for us to involve ourselves with another European war after WWI.. being attacked was the prodding. Before that, don't forget about lend lease. Without it, those that held out against the Germans might not have. Your attitude is a bit down under. Australian? lol
JaleelJohanson62 1 year ago
@Phobos1960
Hmmm you have a slightly old fashion way of thinking.
There is no such thing as our beach and your beach.
A intercontinental nuclear missile from North Korea or Iran puts a end to you dated way of thinking.
Its simply Democracy v Dictatorships.
uknews 1 year ago
@uknews Not quite. There's the whole accuracy thing and the North Koreans are still way behind. If they were to attempt to hit one of our beaches, I'd be worried no matter what beach I was on in the world. Then there's the matter of how much damage can they inflict? We could obliterate them many times over. The thought is total madness though, and I find it amazing that we all haven't blown ourselves up already. I hope we never do. It'd be so useless..
JaleelJohanson62 1 year ago
@grim0033 I'm glad to hear all the American bashing. It means you're still at the bottom looking up at our greatness and attempting to mock it. LOL
JaleelJohanson62 1 year ago
@grim0033 I'll agree that Americans can be embarrassingly self praising. I heard of a guy who traveled to Europe with a shirt that said, "Got Freedom? Thank America". Can you imagine?
But America's ace card was it's industrial power and skill. This was where America really kicked ass over everyone else at the time. At one point, America produced more war material than the rest of the world combined. Japan, for instance, lost the war the moment she started it. She never stood a chance.
ronpaul2008rocks 1 year ago
@ronpaul2008rocks It's true - that's why Roosevelt forced Germany into declaring war by provoking him. No idea why Roosevelt didn't just come out honestly and declare war? I guess he wanted to keep his options open while rearming Britain ended the Depression in the States.
blueray1969 5 months ago
@grim0033 I just scrolled down the comments and I see you offended a lot of Americans. LOL. Pretty funny.
ronpaul2008rocks 1 year ago
@grim0033 I wouldn't, they the soviet russia devided the europe between nazi germany in a so called secret part of the molotov ribbentrop agreement. Thus beginning the ww2! When poland was attacked by germany and finland by soviets. :L
Kekkon3n 1 year ago
@grim0033 I guess maybe you overlooked the other facts, spare parts, complete aircraft, tanks, trucks, tools, machinery, and MONEY that was LOANED to bloody ole' England. Let's not forget the the Canadian, Polish, and Americans (among others) who flew alongside their British brothers during the BoB. Let's be adults and present accurate facts to the trolls here, shall we? Thank you.

That's why the value of the MOH is nothing compared to the VC, A General not involved in combat wins it.
con2477 2 years ago
con. Don't make me laugh. The MOH is the highest medal you can be awarded. What General not involved in combat was ever awarded the MOH? What you say is rubbish.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Hello Easytwat, still here spouting your Xenophobic nonsense I see?!
Talking of the MOH, I got one last week - it fell out of a box of cereal.
Pheonixfromtheshale 2 years ago
Candidate!! Down. Give me fifty!
...now listen up...
Candidate! Do you hear me, Candidare.
The MOH is awarded to Americans.
Are you listening, Candidate?!
Candidate! You will worship the Unted States Medal of Honor and those select heroes who wear it. Hotdamn, I am so proud of these heroes!!!
Candidate! Dismiss!
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Easytwat....
Why don't you read back carefully what you've just written on here....then go away and ponder this question:
'Why does the rest of the world regard the US as a nation of remedial dicks?'
I look forward to your findings.
PS: any joy on getting a girlfriend, a job or a life yet?
Pheonixfromtheshale 2 years ago
Candidate! You need to be trained, boy!
Give me fifty!
Right!
Now listen up!

Medal of Honor awarded to General MacArthur, 1942.
con2477 2 years ago
MacArtur's MOH Citation:
"...for gallant defense against a tremendous superiority of enemy forces in men and arms. His utter disregard of personal danger under heavy fire and aerial bombardment, his calm judgment in each crisis, inspired his troops, galvanized the spirit of resistance of the Filipino people, and confirmed the faith of the American people in their Armed Forces. "
This brings tears to my eyes!!
He was subjected to "heavy fire and aerial bombardment". Better than a VC!
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Finally the idiot realises he is wrong, and my point stands a General wins the highest bravery award LOL, don't worry about the troops in the front line facing the enemy face to face and then spending the rest of the war as a POW of the japs...unlike MacArthur.
con2477 2 years ago
English! Sheesh!
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Many VC winners were only subjected to light arms fire,,,LOL now I get to say "What you say is rubbish" but again we don't expect much else from a wannabe soldier, the Queen of England was under Aerial bombardment in WW2 as a child along with much of the English population,, truly shows what a hero MacArthur was.
con2477 2 years ago
He was near some artillery fire and some air attacks the same could be said of practically any front line soldier in any theatre of was are they all worthy of there countrys highest award?,it was a politically motivated award same as Nixons Silver Star was . You can cry about it as much as you want but thats the truth of the matter .
iroscoe 2 years ago
Thank you for that information. I never knew that Nixon won the Silver Star. That truly is a great achievement. He must have been a very brave man.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
No just well connected enough to gain two service stars without actually seeing any actual combat . Nothing wrong with serving behind the scenes but a bit distasteful to gain decorations that you haven't earned .
iroscoe 2 years ago
Richard Nixon is nothing but a swindling crook and cheat, with the blood of Innocent Vietnamese and Cambodians on his hands.
Silver Star!? pfft - all he deserved was a brass bullet!
Pheonixfromtheshale 2 years ago
The Silver Star is a medal given for courage. They did not just hand them out. I knew a colonel who also had the English DSO.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
'The Silver Star is a medal given for courage' - Okay then brainiac...tell me precisely WHAT feats of courage did Richard Nixon perform in WWII to earn them?
I didn't know it takes courage to run a Navy supply and logistics store on a pacific island, and you get a medal for it!?
Pheonixfromtheshale 2 years ago
iroscoe mentioned that Nixon got the Silver Star. You will have to ask him. I do know that Nixon volunteered for duty, even though he was entitled to be exempted. After many years service in WW2, this brave man with many military citations and awards was promoted to a very high rank in the USN.

I think that although the Battle of Britain was a small battle compared to others it turned out to be very important, because we were not invaded Britain was used as a base for the American forces and the subsequent D-day invasion, if we were invaded would the US have entered the war in Europe?
musicbruv 2 years ago
lol, and the american fellt was uber awesome, they lost most of it in the battle for midaw, and in pearl harbour, they had about 400 ships left, the crew cabins were overcrowded. the only thing america has in terms of military ordinance is numbers. its true, look at britain and germany, such small armies, but they went around the world and were victorious too many time to be considered tiny. numbers dont compare to bravery and honour my friend.
Kaboom62 2 years ago
The USA power comes from large numbers this is true. The only good thing about the USA is that in the end they took sides with the UK and not Germany.

Apparently, Field Marshal von Runstedt, when questioned by the Russians in his cell at Nürmberg as to what he considered the turning point of the war , disappointed them by not saying it was Stalingrad but the Battle of Britain. I believe it.
mulbrogue 3 years ago 2
What many people miss in this statement is a simple yet vital fact.
Had Germany won the BOB, or the British sued for peace, Germany would have been fighting a one front war. Meaning no tanks, aircraft, or troops lost in Africa. Much smaller casualties in Greece, and the many other things that would have changed the situation for the Eastern front.
swdw973 2 years ago
mul. von Runstedt was probably winding them up. The turning point of the war was Midway.
EasyCompanyAirborne 2 years ago
Yep, the tooth fairy and santa claus agree with u on that one
mulbrogue 2 years ago 3
no it wasnt, that was the turning point in the battle of the atlantic, not the turning point in the war, this battle was the FIRST major victory against the nazi threat. europe owes the common wealth and the U.K alot for not simply giving up lkike the french (not being rude, i swear, but they surrendered.) do you think america would of stood a chance against the british fleet (which was the biggest in the world, and still is) under navy control, also the troops from russia if they were defeated
Kaboom62 2 years ago
