I would dearly love to know which lunatic performed the operation on Tubby Hayes that cost him his life. Such an incredibly talented man dying at such a young age. Absolute tragedy.
I found it a bit strange watching this and reading the comments : my grandparents ashes are there, so it's always been a special and personal place to visit, but also a bit odd because of it's almost cult status as a celebrity crematorium ! Still I guess there are lots of places that mean different things to different people. They used to give out a list of the famous people there - lots were described as "entertainers" "musicians" etc, but Marc Bolan is shown as a plain old "70's Pop Star" !
Don't people who are cremated usually have their ashes taken away by relatives to be taken to another place that they like? I was wondering why they were pointing to the grass for Sid James? Is it just a sign for him?
I used to see Marc Bolan at Implosion gigs at the Roundhouse. Then, passing here on my way home, I saw his funeral with a flower guitar by his coffin. Couldn't believe it. RIP Marc.
visited here several times; its nice..also they have a tiny and quaint cafe for a cappuchino and a scone..It felt good just to sit and know where Marc Bolin's ashes are..just a closure I think
It seems to be a beautiful serene resting place. It does not make it any less sad but at least it is beautiful. Several people that l care about rest there. Thank you for posting.
@Paulph04 Yeah your right 1902, just had read up, few days ago and put it this way, it would take you, till Christmas to read out the list famous people, who are in there.
@sidjames1976 That's hell of lot, also speaking of your name, i know Sid James was cremated there, he's one of my all time comedy favourites, absoloutly loved him.
When I was in Golders Green Crematorium one year, they gave me a list of famous people who had been cremated there, such as Bram Stoker(Author of Dracula),Eric Coates(Composer of The Dam Busters March),Paul Kossof(Guitarist with Free)and Sigmund Freud(Father of modern Psychiatry),to name but a few.
Marc Bolan:30th September 1947- 16th September 1977 Sadly Missed!!!
It is a wonderful place to work at regularly, just about every cremation my company has is at Golders, the staff there are always happy to help. For anyone attending a funeral there, may I recommend a local pub called the refectory?
Thanks! The gardens are open everyday of the year. Some of the columbariums are locked and require a member of staff to open them, therefore these are only available during office hours.
Beautifully put together and such a thoughtful soundtrack. My mother and grandparents were cremated and their ashes are at GG,which is a place of peace and happy memories. Well done.
I thought that I recognised the one with the swans. Did you spend any time in the building looking at the multiple storeys of urns sitting on their little shelves?
When I took a picture of Bram Stoker's urn, the operator fellow told me that he had the same as a desktop picture on his computer.
Bram Stoker and Sigmund Freud are also there. I saw their respective urns. And Anna Pavlova also. I can't remember who else. I sought it out because I wanted to see where H.G.Wells was burnt.
I visited there the first trip to London. One of the operators showed me around the crypts. He even told me that he could get me a horse drawn hearse for if I wished to be cremated there some day. That's probably my ideal place to be cremated.
Many people believe it to be but its all denominations. Golders Green is considered the hub of the Jewish faith in the UK so the area is home to many Jewish people. Given that many notable people are Jewish also and the fact the crematorium sits in Golders Green means that many Jewish people end up there.
I have to say that I wouldn't normally be looking out for a Crematorium on youtube!! But hey! this is of great interest & top marks to the person who has posted this. I saw Ronnie Scott & Tubby Hayes several times in concert over the years but never together & so its' good to see them reunited here. Saw Phil Seamen too. Its' amazing all these famous names in one place - may decide to take a trip there sometime. Thanks for this.
Thanks for the comments. Its well worth a visit. Allow a couple of hours and you'll be surprised at some of the names you see. Phi Seamen was a family friend of ours. If you have any stories to tell then we'd love to hear them!
Thank you for sharing this with me, I enjoyed it very much. I know 95% of the names you showed but I never realised Charles Rennie Mackintosh was at GG. I read a bio of Vivien Leigh by Anne Edwards and she says Vivien was cremated at GG but I cannot find any evidence of it anywhere else. Can you help?
No problems..really liked your video too. Yes Vivien Leigh was indeed cremated at GG but her ashes were scattered on the lake at her home. There are so many names at GG I hope to do more videos soon. Thanks again!
Yes, and their plaques are only a few feet away from eachother and their ashes are both scattered in the same area too. Also at Golders Green is Phil Seamen, drummer with the Jazz Couriers and resident at Ronnie Scott's club.
great video, as a guy who used to work in a cemetery digging graves, i love these kinds of videos. very tasteful.

Many more not listed here like Hughie Green, for example.
I only visited The Jewish Crematorium but next time will cross the road and visit the other "All-Faiths" side.
The Jewish people were all in White Tombs on the ground which is quite a sight.

@MeBenHalpin - Yes, its certainly one of the oldest in the country. The oldest is Woking Crematorium, built in 1885.

@Paulph04 Really, how old is this one then, few famous names, that have been laid to rest on these grounds.
MeBenHalpin 1 year ago
@MeBenHalpin - Hi Ben. I think this one was built about 1902. There's probably more famous names at rest here than at any other.
