HD DVD has a future as the next disc format for Nintendo Wii U.... they are using a slightly modified HD-DVD drive for the Wii U... everyone says its a blu-ray drive... but sony and pioneer wouldn't want Nintendo using a reverse engineered version of their blu-ray format... so Toshiba's left over HD-DVD format still gets a decent enough use in Nintendo's next gen system...after all they used a slightly modified dvd format for gamecube and Wii... makes sense to use HD-DVD for Wii U
1. Low capacity 15GB & 30GB is not enough of a jump for consumers
2. No Burners and recordable media on the market for consumers to take advantage of, tons of blu-ray burners, single and dual layer discs were available from the competition
3. No scratch resistant coatings for added protection of consumer disc purchases
4. Limited Picture and sound bit rates due to low capacity means less quality
5. Bad red colour makes the format look old and dated
Foolish movie companies jumping on to the Blu Ray ship. HD DVD was a cheaper medium and movies look just as good if not better. The German release of Terminator 2 is one of the best looking.
Toshiba had many other plans for HD DVDs future too which was a shame.
DVD upscaling is excellent on these players too. I luckily own a XE-1 and the build quality is the best ive seen on any electrical product.
Region free DVDs can now be played, but would be great to see Divx and more formats unlocked
i think that microsoft should've put an HD-DVD player in Xboxs since Microsoft sold alot of Xboxs that would've increase the number of sold HD-DVD Player. Sony sold alot of PS3s which included Blu-Ray players and so the number of sold Blu-Ray player increased.
I think that the reason that HD-DVD lose is that the special features were in SD,Blu-ray was in HD,Other its that it havent many Studios,(the consumers like movies from different studios like spider-man),It didnt have a protacted layer like the Blu-ray has,3-It takes about 3:00 minutes to open the slot,Blu-ray was faster.
frankly hd dvd could have solved the middle east crisis, fed africa, slimmed america and fixed britains broken teeth but - lol - blu ray won. ha ha ha ps3 rules!
well... HD-DVD lost. Just got announced on TV. By tomorrow 2-19-08 Toshiba and others will announce their deals off to HD-DVD. Blue-Ray won. I hope that Paramount now releases Transformers on Blue.
I haven't picked a side yet. It just looks like to me that blu ray isn't that superior to hd dvd. I keep hearing blu ray is so much better but I really don't get it. They both have great picture. and does it really matter about storage capacity when it come to movies. I think movies look about as good as they are going to get right now. Capacity is not going to improve the picture quality. I may be wrong
I asked myself the same question you will have to ask yourself now! Which system has the most movies I want to see in HD? You may find the answer to be heavily in favor of Blu-Ray and you will also find that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD movies by nearly 3 to 1. That's why I decided to go Blu!!!
im sorry but the truth hurts the cheapest blu-ray cost $234.07 blu-ray has java and it is the best in the picture and can storge more u are the one who should wake up hd dvd is the new Titanic
Wake up people. Or help me understand how paying 350 more dollars for a player that does basically the same thing as hd dvd is smart. What if hd dvd was backed by the companies as blu ray. Then would people feel the same about it. Would it matter that is doesn't use a blue laser to play movies. Why buy a player just because it's popular. I'm just going on what I see currently.
I had to decide which system had the most movies that I wanted to see in HD. After putting a list of 50 movies together, I found out that 7 out of 10 were in Blu-Ray. I went with the numbers because I knew that would be the deciding factor!
well we dont live in a financially sound country people. All you idiots loathing over gas prices and the anti christ you deem as George W Bush for ruining your all ready pathetic meaningless lives want to spend more money on a $500 or so on a blu ray player when you can get a hd-dvd player for $150, are incredible. "ya blu ray...now i can put my family into more debt...thats the american ahhh way...uhhh ya...*burp*"
What you're missing is the fact that some people really love to watch movies and most of the movies that people like are in Blu-Ray! HD-DVD is on it's way out even though it currently has more features! It's all in the numbers.
haha omg sell ur hd dvd player b4 its too late on ebay and i can't wait for beowulf and american gangster on blu-ray sorry but hd dvd is getting his ass kicked so hard by blu-ray like now new line and warner went blu-ray also sonic and target and others so looks like hd dvd players will cost $50 in this year xmas
actually their just getting started.and youll be happy.okay paramount and universal wont be leaving hd dvd.its main goal is to support hd dvd.and here comes the good part.wait for it.paramount and universal just realese beowulf and american gangster exclusively so yea the two major studios along with the studios that support are just getting started and yes i support it because i am a big fan of hd dvd.
the lady didnt say that, she was reiterating what critics said in the past and in recent time.
Hd dvd aint dead. Its just mindless blu ray hype thats cool at the moment. Clueless consumers that are band wagon hoppers are all like "ohh ahhhh blu ray is the best now, it beat up hd dvd...coooooolllll...and now ill have to spend 3 times more for a player. Awesome! im cool, that logo looks so blue and cool. BLU RAY!!!"
i would say thats the kinda of logic behind blu ray enthusiasts.
i smell propaganda, oh my bad its bullshit, blu ray fanboy forever. ever got an hd dvd player and never wanted too. 100% no one million% committed to blu ray.
Thats's my point. Toshiba focused in on the consumers way too much, disregarding what the studios and manufacturers want. People get $100 HD-DVD player with 5-7 free movies and final spec of HD-DVD from day one. Discs have no region coding or any copy protection other than AACS.
lol at first i thought she was going nuts, warner bros just went blu-ray hd dvdead is crap many ebay users sell their hd dvd players b4 it will be worthless
Owning a movie on a piece of plastic will become a thing of the past when broadband increases in America. Digital distribution will be the future , if there is one.
I agree, there are still a lot of people who still buy CD's just for the sake of owning them. Some people just love having a collection. Bragging rights, decor, etc...
I still hope HD DVD wins, because it still has more features and as she says, Toshiba has delivered on it's promises! But if HD DVD doesn't do something very soon, they will be dead.
Sounds like Jody is recycling the same press junket material from last year. How can Toshiba be proud of selling players to people that will have a fewer selection in movies?

HD-DVD failed for the following reasons.
1. Low capacity 15GB & 30GB is not enough of a jump for consumers
2. No Burners and recordable media on the market for consumers to take advantage of, tons of blu-ray burners, single and dual layer discs were available from the competition

did Microsoft send some of its people to Toshiba just to teach them how they should lie and say we are the only and the best to deliver this or that?
I mean this reminds me Kinect E3 presentation.
This is Kinect and it is literally another PSEYE but we won't tell you that, we will use 500 million dollars to tell you you are wrong.

How was it the best format?
The picture & sound quality was identical to Blu-Ray, and it could only hold 30GB max while Blu-Ray can hold 50GB max?
