Very nice work for especially only 18months back in the game.

You do come across a bit bitter in my opinion and to say Golden Demon isnt judged correctly or fairly I think simply adds to how bitter you come across.

Keep up the good work.

I am not saying this to bash you or anything but I feel you are a way away from the usual Golden Demon standard, the way you handle your minis only accentuates this.

I really liked your model, though I do think the models that won, won deservedly. And you think you had problems with your model getting noticed? Mine was directly under the Slayer Sword winner!! It got completely overshadowed, literally. All the light was blocked off it. Not that I'm comparing mine to the masterpiece that won. Its just a shame that many of the winners tend to be the same people who have won in the past.

Your painting technique is excellent and im sure that if you continue practicing you will be more than good enough to at least make the cut next year... My advice to you is that you should perhaps work on conversion techniques/scratch sculpts and so on to make your minis stand out from the crowd that little bit more. Look at the demon winners on any year and you can see that the vast majority have at least a simple but effective conversion and also excellent composition. Goood luck :)

Fran great Vid. My wife and I said exactly the same thing regarding the games day. I think the way that games day was done was not half as good as it should have been for £30 each... I too expect an entry fee but we didnt even get any free stuff? or announcements or talks etc like you suggest.. Oh yes thats right I could have got a talk if I was a subscriber to there magazine. Ruck sack monkeys need a slap I agree!

I really like the colour scheme on the Nijal.

I am really surprised you didn't get finalist, especially with those scouts.

One thing which you may want to improve on is the bases and maybe a plinth as the reason people use plinths is they make the model stand out and make it look like a 'serious' entry to the staff so they put it on a better shelf.

I have to agree with the bottom shelf thing, I just felt sorry for those that got stuck there, unless they at eye level or higher I don't think they got a good look at, I was lucky with both my entries being placed on the top shelf. And I also agree that some entries that didn't get through should have.

Still another year of prep for the next golden demon. And yes the forgeworld stand was horrific! My girlfriend was pushed all over the place and yes there needs to be a better judgeing system.

Personal review of games day. Judging was horrible. I wasn’t their but I know allot of GD worthy entry’s that deserved to win and didn’t even make the first cut. It was ridiculous because there were allot of people who got a pin and did not deserve it. Now not to say many of the winners were not up there with the greats but there somespecific rules now because the GD randomness hit us again this year. Nothing about were the entry’s were placed, theirs "rules" people believe now.

Gw however went old school this year with many retro legends won awards and deservedly. It’s not luck seriously fran, they look at the bottom shelf’s. You cannot blame it on that. there are rules you follow for gd and there are many things. you have to follow. I.E Recent release’s always get a boost. About the EM popping thing. They believe every miini can always pop. You got to love them. Good work though fran it is a vast improvment from were you were... GD horriably over priced.

If you didnt enter i dont see how you can say what and what wasnt done right in terms of judging? im sure they did look at what they can but thats not the point i was agreeing with Jedifran on, if it was on the bottom 2 shelves they did not get looked at, and if they were pushed into the centre again they didnt get much of a viewing. There are many ways they could make it fairer without huge expense

I also know several formner members of GW/citadel both on the business end and members of the older Eavy Metal teams and one current GW game designer who i was at Uni with and they all agree that GD and GW have so much potential but as so badly organised and run, any other company would of gone under long ago, to quote Jeff Carroll Warhammer and 40k is an amazing hobby "IN SPITE" of gw, made great by the gamers who pay and paint it

I have noticed that minis based for gaming do worse than those on display bases as well. I loved my first Games Day in Baltimore, but I heard it has gone down considerably since I went. I think Canis looks great albeit a bit flat in some areas, but I think that is the result you were wanting. Lol - Hordes of Chaos. :)

Bad luck Franny. I'm pretty sure I saw your entry though. I absolutely understand the contention of bottom shelf bias. In fact I was banging on to my friend about retail psychology as we were inspecting the entries.

Did anyone see that Imperial Guard 'photo moment' diorama? I wasn't around for the awards sadly, but that deserved the Slayer Sword as much as any other imo.

Don't mention price! As if £30 wasn't enough, my friend and I then had to contend with £8 parking.

And yes, the parking was a bitch. I had to pay too.

Ridiculous! I have been to soooooo many scifi and comic events, there is SO much potential for gamesworkshopto do some awesome things... yet they chose to do nothing :( event a talk on the new 8th ed would have been amazing!

It woud have been better had they left the models in their respective cabinets for public view and then allocated 45 minute slots purely for judging. This could have been easily done, if they had chosen a layout whereby the Golden Demon section was roped off. I think this would have negated the bias, some what.

The Forgeworld stand was like a freakin' hive! You got off lightly by the sounds of things; I came out feeling violated.

@jc55 you know, I thought the same thing about the minis. The judges never even saw most of the of the entries from the front due to the way the cabinets were set up. Was not a good way of doing it. I like your suggestion alot. Think they should really look into that!

as for the Forgeworld stand: It helps when you're a petite girl as everyone give you the sympathy vote and lets you go first and doesnt barge you as much ;)

I suggest you take a leaf out of Laverne Hooks' book (ref Police Academy). You're right about the potential for GD. I managed to get in on a talk or two, like the WH Fantasy Online prelaunch but there was so much going on at the pavillion end it was not always audible. It was a good day out but no tangible organisation imo - if it weren't for the LG Arena staff - well, probably doesn't pay to think about it.

As for your work Franny - very good. Just a matter of time I feel.

@Doomtiger1991 Thanks :) Am proud anyway. One of the 'eavy metal lot said I was "one to watch" if I was this good and only been painting for 18months! So THAT makes the trip worth while in itself I guess :)
