Now I wish I played an instrument instead of being a vocalist. then I could play my tuba part and use my classical elitist powers sing the french horn part because they are always wrong.
I just heared this piece at a small concert in a cloister (o.O) where I sang, too. I'm sure a great part of the audience (about 60-80 years of age) expected pious church songs (like the one I had to contribute -.- ) and was a little bemused :-P. But especially some of the other young musicians, like me, were quite amazed, very courageous to play a piece like that there... But it rocked! :-)
if any one has hurd of mike forbs he was in the us navy band and i just got back from band camp and he teches their and he beatboxed on the tuba and played fnugg he is amazing.
Responses to this video show that a little less that 2% of people will dislike almost anything. (Probably sat on a sharp stick at some point in their lives.) Makes me want to re-establish my embouchure..
Lol, I learned how to sing while I was playing my instrument, someone poked me, and I screamed while I was playing. I ended up just screaming and playing at the same, and was able to slowly translate that into singing. Its not hard, you just need to take that first step.
Kline, sing from your throat, not with your mouth, just allow yourself to go on "auto pilot" with the actual buzzing of the lips and focus more on the throat singing, start on the same note you're playing on your tuba than work your way up to a 5th or an octive, or wherever you want to be on the scale :)
Hey everyone! If you are in the Sacramento area, May 15 and 16th Mr. Baadsvik will be performing at CSU Sacramento in the Down in the Valley Tuba Euphonium Festival. Check it out at the Down in the Valley Facebook page!
@943kline i play trombone, best bet is to angle your head down and push your lips forwards a bit, you'll feel the space in the back of your throat and soft pallet, aim to hit a perfect 5th it's the easiest to get
@943kline It's not that hard.. You at least if you play tuba or euphonium, of you're playing the trumpet or something it's harder to do it. But just try to play any tone you're comfortable with, (prefearaply a low one) then you sort of open up you throath and sing/talk/make whatever sound you like. And that should do it.. I've been abel to do it ever sins I was 12 years, and I'm not one of those insanly good players, so you should be abel to do it.
@943kline I just saw this video and I don't know if this question is already answered. Use the air that is being used to play to vibrate the vocal chords, and then it's just pitch control. That's hoe I do it.
Hum. Now do it without your mouth closed. Now make your Oempature. Now hum with your mouth open and blow at the same time. Now hum louder. Now louder. Now do the same and introduce your mouthpiece. Now introduce instrument.
@943kline buzz your lips like a horse and either growl or hum while doing that. and thats how you produce the sound into the instrument, it takes practice
you have to first make a sound with your voice then start to blow air at the same time and a lot of practice. I saw Oystein live in quebec city and this guy is amazing a lot of skills are needed to reach just 1/10 of what he make as a "tuba beat box" His a great musician.
@943kline for a while, just try buzzing and humming at the same time, then when you have gotten really good at that, go ahead and add your instrument, keep in mind that this won't work too well with woodwinds. Also, you will find it really easy to hum 3rds and 5ths. Then it is just practice.
@943kline what i did to learn how to do multiphonics, is buzz in the air, with no instrument, or mouthpeice, then try to hum, so you get a weird sounding vibration, so your vibrating your lips while holding out a pitch, and eventually you can do this, and get good to where you can through your instrument, i play tuba, and its a lil easier to do on it, than other brass instruments
@marrianeelizabeth I'm made some progress. Practice using your mouthpeice (talking or singing a song while buzzing) than slowly apply that to the tuba. IT WORKS
@943kline The way I learned is more or less think of it as a hum rather than singing and it happens, more than likely it's not correct, but it sounds almost exact
@943kline let your voice flow through as your playing. Open up your vocal cords at much as you can and start at a low note. given the fact most people play a bbb tuba, just start at a low g and work your way up.
@943kline After watching this video for the first time i promptly learned how to do some of that. You have to have the reference pitch your going to song first. Play any note below that note. IMPORTANT TO KNOW, you can't sing lower then your playing. then as Etagawesome said, its more of a hum then singing. Staying in the same partial is gonna be difficult while doing this for a little bit
@943kline Just do it...I know it's a shitty tip, but it is really how you do it...First, try to whistle while ''singing'', it will sounds like a vacuum, but it is the same way to play in your horn while singing. After, try to buzz while singing, and then put your mouthpiece on your horn, and just do it.
@943kline Its more like humming then anything else and it helps to sing the note that you're playing at first and then try to slowly raise you sung pitch, it'll battle the note your playing but eventually you'll get the fourth or fifth above that note and it's really easy to get then.
I am so going to order the solo. For a month or so, I've been practicing my multiphonics after I heard this. This freaking unbelievable. I'm actually pretty decent now. I can sing up to an octave above the note that I'm playing, but I can't do too much below the note I'm playing, I hope the piece doesn't have any singing below the note... if it does, oh well. A fun challenge.
Ehh, it depends on the instrument. Sometimes it's standard to memorize, sometimes it's not. Not all instruments have to memorize for recital format, but I think it's necessary for a concerto.
I personally find it kind of amusing that vocalists are nearly ALWAYS expected to have an entire program memorized, when we have words to worry about on top of music that an instrumentalist could get away with reading during performance. Not fair!
Olha, esse cara e demais....ja tinha visto algo parecido, mais nao assim!!!parabens!quem vai adorar esse video e o meu irmao renato, ele toca um tuba igual a esse!sera que ele faiz igual?sera um desafio!!!vamos ver...
My tuba performance major classmate just played this for a tuba showcase last year! It's way cool. I could swear that every single eye in the room was popping out of its socket. Nice to see and hear the composer himself playing it!
mr. baadsvik I would love to have a lesson with you if you are even around the Virginia, U.S. area. I am currently an above average college tubist most days and would love any help I can get. Some days i get frustrated that i can't play some of the things you can haha. please help haha
One of the coolest things that happened to me ever was sitting across from this man in a rib shack in Alabama sharing drinking stories over beer and barbecue. He's the coolest, most down to earth guy on the planet. Friggin' awesome.
I saw him live last night. The most amazing concert ever. Wasn't planning on buying anythin but I rushed back and bought a score of another one of his songs and had him sign it.
it pretty fun to play a little simple groove, really get going, then suddenly make strange noises in a flasetto voice. it sounds hilarious, and if you do it right will cause most people in a room crack up.
The best thing to play when starting out is the Funeral March, in fifths. Or that bit from Phantom of the Opera, with the descending/ascending semitone thing (also in fifths). So fun!
Well as one who frequents multiphonics, (singing and playing), I can tell you that a lot of these guys are right. A relaxed throat is necessary to achieve the desired result, but there is more to it. You need to spend time just buzzing and singing with the piano to really get it to relax. And when its called singing it is a little inaccurate, it's more of a hum. But hum and buzz sounds sexual.
My hero. I don't ever play tuba. And my mouth is on the floor. Tubas rock. He's my freaking hero. He's fantastic. He rocks my world. That's gotta be hard to do. But he's fantastic. I love him sooooo much.

it pretty fun to play a little simple groove, really get going, then suddenly make strange noises in a flasetto voice. it sounds hilarious, and if you do it right will cause most people in a room crack up.

The best thing to play when starting out is the Funeral March, in fifths. Or that bit from Phantom of the Opera, with the descending/ascending semitone thing (also in fifths). So fun!

its easier than you think, just sing and play.
Instead of just blowing sing. just need a bit O practice.

Thank you so much for posting the videos on You Tube, and letting people discover your wonderful art.
If you are ever in the Central Florida area preforming, I will make every effort to attend.
