they both were getting hit with big shots- so ref stops in a little early, quarry looked beaten- these guys took to many head punches-it adds up later.
fight should have been stopped a round earlier, no wonder he suffered from dementia. most of Norton's loses came in the latter part of his career. Foreman knocked out almost everyone he fought
wow, did anyone else notice, at 1:47, that Norton is going down and the ref catches him?!?!? Looks very strange. Quarry lands a right, pause, then a second right bends Norton's legs and the following hook would've clinched it but the ref steps in for no reason and holds up Norton!!!!.... tough night for Quarry!
@dlebs - I've noticed that too; but in looking this over several times through the years, and taking into account the entire fight, I believe this was slippage on something wet in the ring. Also I would think that if one of Quarry's shots had staggered Norton twice, then Norton would have been easy to take out. Check out his fights against Shavers, Foreman and Cooney. Norton was easy prey once he was staggered.
Instead he kept fighting strong, and didn't "stagger" again. It was a slip.
@tylersfs Yep, Norton is off-balance, not hurt. I'm convinced the followup hook from Quarry would've been a flash knockdown, but the ref helps Norton get his balance back!!!
@dlebs - the "easy prey" was outside my main point, but if you study fights that Norton lost quickly, you'll notice once a big puncher staggered him he was fairly easy to finish off.
On the contrary, Shavers dropped Larry Holmes with one of the hardest rights probably in the history of boxing. Yet Holmes recovered and managed to stop Shavers via TKO. My point here is that if you stagger Norton early, you'll probably finish him off early. Try to box him and you're in for a tough fight.

Norton was an excellent fighter, in addition to being intelligent and articulate. Had a very difficult style for Ali, evidenced by fact that Norton really won the last fight, 1st fight Norton clearly beat Ali, 2d fight, though won by Ali, was very close.
@loyaldude10 Everytime he fought a hard hitter he was beat up Shavers, Foreman and Cooney. He had a difficult style for boxer types but didn't have the toughness to fight a brute.
@Richdanahuff ---he certainly did not fare well against the hard punchers---Foreman annihilated him, although he was aging when he fought Shavers and Cooney. May not have been able to beat them when he was younger, though, so your point is well taken.
@loyaldude10 He did not have a style to go backwards he shuffled forward with that wide stance and could never get away. He was a very difficult fighter for a boxer like an Ali or a Holmes.

@loyaldude10 Nortons only greatness was he had a style an old Ali struggled with he wasn't enough man to handle a prime IN SHAPE Quarry. Nortons people avoided every dangerous fighter they could they would never have fought Quarry had he been in shape and not taking the fight on short notice.
i read a ring magazinein about 1995 article with ken norton who said he hated jerry cause he thought he was racist. i never read any or heard any bigoted comments by jerry ever.he had many black and hispanic friends.great fighter.r.i.p jerry

quarry came in a bit heavier than usual, at 207. seems a bit sluggish.

@tylersfs ... I don't agree with your "easy prey" sentence though - those guys were huge powerhouses who put him away.
