Deaths like these in shows, though rarely seen, are the most realistic and heart-wrenching. Derek's reaction to the shot is very authentic, he could possibly have added a slight twitch or something, but this is a very memorable death. Quick, to the point, move on. Just gotta move on.
@fjccommish No, the Derek Reese we know still has a bullet in his head. Alternate Derek is not our Derek, he's almost our Derek, but he isn't. The future changes when one uses timetravel and people you used to know aren't the people you used to know anymore.
This scene still sticks out in my mind as one of the most memorable death scenes ever... a main character shot dead with no epic music, no heroic deed, no witness sobbing his name... just a quick pop in the head, and then back to the action with the other characters.
I remember chatting with a friend while watching this episode. Then suddenly stopping, looking at the tv... each other... the tv...
@krystalb2000 Exactly my reaction. I don't know if I've ever seen such an important character die so suddenly and unexpectedly before. But even though I was pretty shocked, I think it was a good decision by the writers. It was a soldier's death.
Looking back, I didn't want him to die. If he had prior to this episode, I thought he'd go down in a hero's death, like trying to save John, then Derek gets shot in the abdomen/chest wall and still firing, then taking the final blow to death as John watched, and feeling helpless. But seeing it again in a whole new perspective, it definitely made it real. No bullshit about it.
@Krypton88 well your 100% right how it was realistic, i do agree on that, but it is pretty boring if you ask me, oh well hes dead hes dead! what can i do
he should have died more epicly.... like blow himself up to defeat a terminator or die slo-mo and pull out his pistol. and i wouldve told cameron to bring the body :(
@dudejustponts I don't know... blow himself up... seen that... slo-mo drawing... seen that... I've seen too many cliché deaths. This one was fresh n new.
@dudejustponts I think that's why I liked his death...because it WASN'T done in an over the top, "epic" fashion like most shows/movies love to play it. It was done in the most realistic way possible.
Quick, sudden and completely unexpected. it happens so fast that you have the same reactions as the rest of the characters.
Derek had to die THE MOST PATHETIC death any hero has ever died. I can't believe he fought Terminators for a living. I mean damn. Even Kyle managed to blow a terminator half to hell before he died. Derek didn't even get a shot off.
One shot in the head. Boom. Dead.
Pathetic. No "I'll hold him, just run" or "I'll sacrifice myself for my friends".
One shot in the head. Boom. Dead. At least Charlie died a heroic death though. I was pissed when he died! I almost stopped watching the show
A hero's death is the kind of death no one hears about. Death is swift and waits for no one who wants a dramatic death. He didn't hold the metal, but he actually DID sacrifice himself for his friends. If you fail to see this, one could not expect too much from you.
@WeednBone That depends on how you look at it. At the time, he wasn't with the group. You could argue that he isn't fighting just for john, but not to relive that war. But, you have a point though.
@DarkfireSuperSonic No, it doesn't depend on how you look at it. It is like that. In fact, in one or even multiple episodes he would die for John Connor. The way he set up a safe house and everything before he entered the show, suggests he isn't trying to stop JD.
@WeednBone The safe house shows that they WERE trying to stop JD. They were hunting down leads for skynet. Hell, Derek killed the past version of Andy Goode because he confessed in the future he had helped to MAKE skynet. Then in the end of season one he says to John at the park watching while watching his past self, "you would do anything to keep from watching burn again." There was something before it though. It's true that he would die for Connor though. He even says so in season 2
@DarkfireSuperSonic That makes one of us-- I absolutely *DESPISED* Derek Reese, and actually cheered when the T888 shot him. I believe my exact words were "Good fucking riddance." He was an asshole (to friend and foe alike), and seemed to serve no purpose other than to show that humans can be just as ruthless, heartless, and evil as Terminators (except Derek, like you said, was pathetic and nowhere near as badass as ANY Terminator). Should've killed him off sooner than this.
It took me a while to process that he actually died lol. I was eating, saw him get shot and didn't think nothing of it because it was an action scene, about a minute later I was like "WTF, did they really just kill him like that?" Haha, it sucks that he died, specially like that but it had a huge impact on me because of it and I loved it.
When I saw this on tv I thought that it had to be a dream they were in, then two weeks later the show was over and then I understood. Please bring back the show!!!
@WeednBone And a lot of the deaths that I've seen, particularly in more serious sci-fi, show death as being quick, boring, and blunt.
The Body in Buffy the Vampire Slayers. 80% of all the deaths in Battlestar Galactica. Firefly, Weeds, and many shows over the past few years have decided to do away with dramatic deaths.
Hell, even T:SCC did this with Charlie's death, which happened completely off screen.
@RoyalGuard503 Firefly: Way up Wash' death to the Preachers' or even David Krumholtz' death... Battlestar doesn't count because it's Battlestar... Weeds and Buffy are utter crap, so I wouldn't know if my life depended on it.
Charlie wasn't really a main character. Not like Derek was.
@WeednBone How does BSG not count because it's BSG? It's a sci-fi show that treated itself as seriously as Terminator did. It MORE than counts.
Sci-fi lately has been doing away with dramatic deaths. Main character or no. Derek have a sudden, brief death that was made stronger BY the fact that he was a main character. It was harsh, and we had no chance to soak it in. It's better writing and directing.
@RoyalGuard503 BSG sucked at such a large degree that I refuse to see it as something else than a piece of crap that should be shot down like a dog with rabies.
People hated his death, but honestly, the brutal realism behind it, as well as the already buzzing anxiety from the growing situation, made his death extremely epic. The moment you saw the bullet go into his head, your heart sank, and you thought that the world was screwed. I think that's what they were trying to portray here.
Because of that, I think it's up to par with Kyle's death.
I wish I could get Derek Reese's awesome looking M65 field jacket. The ones in the surplus stores are only in either camo, olive green, or black. I haven't seen one that is grayish like the one he wears. And they are slightly different (no waist cord, doesn't have inside pockets, and no zipper on the left).
@BigTony86 yes i know it was a great show but it should of carryed on but they stoped it cos of some stuipd doll show . Have you seen prison break its a fantastic show if you have not plz watch it it drive u crazy
This scene blew my mind and broke my heart- but the stark cold realism behind it shocked me the most. Though I'd love to see a grand and befitting death to any major character passing- this is one of the most starkly realistic moments on the show. Sometimes death comes quickly, unannounced and with no remorse. It is a war they are fighting, and this is what war brings.
I really hated how Derek died. He was a war veteran and he died too sudden. No emotion, no last words, no epic ending, no nothing. Just a hollow point to the head. He was one of my favorites.
When I first saw this episode and that happen I had to rewind it lol I was like what the fuck, glad they didn't do some overly dramatic standoff, which seemed to give it more impact, and realism I guess thats how a machine would do it.
What the fuck...this is how they killed him off? No epic battle scene, no random last words or anything? Just straight shot in the head? Thats just freaking disappointing~!!!
biggest WTF!?!??!?!?! moment that I knew was coming in TV history for me. I knew it was coming when the show started and then it happened and i was still like "NO FUCK THAT THAT'S FUCKING GAY!"
@TheTrashVictim I have an idea! Why don't you guys go to an actual warzone... find some guy that just got shot in the head... and see how well he uses his "last words"... Grow up, please.
@WeednBone Woah, ease up dude. Real life warzones are completely different to television shows, usually in television shows the major characters tend to have a show-y ending. I don't need to grow up to know that in real life people don't get that so I don't need you to tell me to grow up thanks very much.
I know I'm not going to endear myself to anyone by saying this, but personally I shed no tears when the Water Delivery Guy shot Derek in the head; I never liked the idea of the character, never liked the character, never liked *HIM* (I thought he was an asshole); and I especially didn't like how he acted around Cameron. If others like him, fine, I just never did (I actually cheered when I saw this for the first time on TV).
I loved this scene. I mean, I hated that the Reese we knew died, but as far as unexpected turns goes, it was one of the best I've seen on TV. Just rounding a corner, BAM, main character dies like a third rate extra. Great stuff.
well if the show was given a 3rd season it would show that the reese in season 3 would have been a very different derek reese. Since connor stupidly removed himself from the time line derek and kyle would have been the leaders of a more less organized resistance. But after a few future episode he would time travel back in time with john. So it's derek but not the derek we knew.
refreshing to see a "hero" character just die randomly like this normally he would survive for some reason or go 10 rounds in H2H combat with teh terminator or some shit and amazingly win so this was a good death.
@LittleGooseWalking I agreed because just to shot him point bleak range doesn't cut it for me because he is a solider he wouldn't a little bit more kine in hearing metal sneaking up behide him.
Terminators are designed to INFILTRATE ie not making their footsteps sound like metal. Duh. And in case you don't know, people get shot from point blank ranged in wars all the time. This is realism at it's best.
When I say metal I was refered to the slang term for the terminator, and Derek was a solider and any if he was good solider he sould more kine with his sense like hearing the foot steps coming so he could dodge that bullet. For I am a son of a former Army Ranger telling you this a good solider was kine his or her senses to survied years in combat .This isn't realism for only novice solider would be shot point blank range in the head so it doesn't cut for me to see a trainted solider die that way.
@strangerinwhite u dont dodge bullets you move and they already were ging to miss, as for being a good soldier, doesnt mean youll survive any longer then a rookie if u get a bad run of cards, derek was a good soldier but still only human, and humans make fatal mistakes somtimes
I liked the character, but the show, had it been continued, could have gone on without him. Having said that it was great to see a realistic death like this. Most any other show would have dragged this out for several episodes.
The heroic, dragged out, overly dramatic, self-sacrificing death has become a cliche. Derek's death was realistic. Even veterans get killed this way.
He never even knew whether his killer was human or machine. There were mistakes, he was split up with everyone else-probably thinking the guy was human.
Sarah acted like a bitch, didn't even close his eyes.
T-idk: *goes past corner - fluke shots derek without aiming. lol a very superstitious noscope - lol i kno noscope is for snipers but imaging a 50.cal noscope to the head, brain everywhere lol :)*
I still can't believe this show (and Reaper, and Life on Mars) was cancelled.......... but 90210 and 1 tree hill and gossip girl and melrose place and vampire diaries and other crap are still alive and kicking.
I know only a few good ones are still out there like The Unit,24 but most are shit out there. I ageed with I can't belive this show cancelled I hope they don't cancelled V because I be piss as hell if they do.
His first death is like when your first pet died, at first you didn't realize he was dead, but when he was buried in the cometary, you finally realized he wasn't coming back it was just a major shock factor.
Everyone should tell the SYFY channel to get off there A** and buy this show this is the perfect show to be in there lineup. Now that battlestar Galactica is done this could be there new golden egg. Come on SYFY terminator fans will love your butts forever if you do this an we are many.
This death was an insult they killed him like he was an extra on set. Derek deserved a heroes death. Fox was high they ment to cancel dollhouse and wrote the wrong show to get canceled. Screw you FOX you are a studio with out honor nor respect to shows or fans who watch your sorry channels.
The death was so shocking and memorable precisely because of how "BAM!" it was. Highly realistic too. It'll be remembered in a good way for a very long time.
Eh I guess we just have different opinions of it but it still was a great episode cause it made viewers remember that. None of there favorite characters were safe in the world of terminator. It would be nice to see a channel do a spin off of the Reese brothers they made them into one of the most interesting characters you want to know more about. there is allot to tell from them.
probably, "fun dose not compute" ever notice that they never say terminator during the show, aside from the previously-on and opening sequence...oh, and the finale
I would have had him checking out the nanny, then get shot in the head after looking up at the terminator. It would have said something about how much he really does care about people, which is ultimately why he hates the machines as much as he does.
What the hell was that. Derick was awesome in the series why they take himout.First Cromartie and now Derick, no wonder why the show was canceling because they took out the main stars in TSCC.
i guess people are complaining because of the way it was done the scene. he just gets killed like a fuckin extra playing a cop in the way sort of thing. but in one way very realistic and quite cold. but on the other such a well established character in my opinion deserved a bit more emotion.
i dont see why everone's bitching 'bout the way he got blown off. fosh fiedmen said that it was going to happen, albeit more than i expected it to, but then he said/hinted that through time-travel any one could be brought back, though he died once, and that ver of him is gone his soul lives on in each rendition of him which is brought about through altering time. so i was extatic when he came back!
i was at my friends watching this on a 50inch HD tv (his tv is f-ing awesome). he changed channels during the first commercial. when he turned it back on i see Derek laying on the floor with a bullet in his head. i was like WTF. thats some BS. and i missed it. thank god for dvr recorders. went home and watched it over and over and over.
Thanks for the upload!
WE MUST HAVE SEASON 3. hearing rumors on here they might not have one.
ahhhh the reese brothers were my favorite characters in the whole movie how could derek die like that make derek die more heroic not some average cop guy who gets shot defending something
Derek Reese clearly states he hasn't seen John Connor in a while, which means he won't get many scenes with John, thus he can be reduced to a mere extra.
Ahahaha that ending zoom and subtitle was so unnecessary.

DorianMichaelsIII 1 year ago
I loved this scene. I mean, I hated that the Reese we knew died, but as far as unexpected turns goes, it was one of the best I've seen on TV. Just rounding a corner, BAM, main character dies like a third rate extra. Great stuff.

spider394 2 years ago
well he was seen alive in the last episode so he is not dead.
crocop4life 2 years ago
Well, that's because that was in a possible past of Derek. Doesn't change the fact that he will die in that mansion.
WeednBone 2 years ago
well if the show was given a 3rd season it would show that the reese in season 3 would have been a very different derek reese.

ElensarFFXI 2 years ago
They just keep killing everyone off. Charlie, His Wife, Riley, Jesse and now Derek!
They could have at least have him go down in a firefight - it would have been more heroic :)
LittleGooseWalking 2 years ago
@LittleGooseWalking I agreed because just to shot him point bleak range doesn't cut it for me because he is a solider he wouldn't a little bit more kine in hearing metal sneaking up behide him.
strangerinwhite 2 years ago
Terminators are designed to INFILTRATE ie not making their footsteps sound like metal. Duh. And in case you don't know, people get shot from point blank ranged in wars all the time. This is realism at it's best.
WeednBone 2 years ago
When I say metal I was refered to the slang term for the terminator, and Derek was a solider and any if he was good solider he sould more kine with his sense like hearing the foot steps coming so he could dodge that bullet. For I am a son of a former Army Ranger telling you this a good solider was kine his or her senses to survied years in combat .This isn't realism for only novice solider would be shot point blank range in the head so it doesn't cut for me to see a trainted solider die that way.
strangerinwhite 2 years ago
@strangerinwhite u dont dodge bullets you move and they already were ging to miss, as for being a good soldier, doesnt mean youll survive any longer then a rookie if u get a bad run of cards, derek was a good soldier but still only human, and humans make fatal mistakes somtimes
rayne7echo 1 year ago
@strangerinwhite infiltrators sounds like us, hes a good soldier but only human

wow. derek did'nt have a chance against that terminator.

AustriaDictator 2 years ago
I liked the character, but the show, had it been continued, could have gone on without him. Having said that it was great to see a realistic death like this. Most any other show would have dragged this out for several episodes.
vaguy78 2 years ago
What'd you expect? Of course one shot kills him.
FortitudeOfHeaven 2 years ago 2
That's what happens when you get shot in the head.

derek: *swat sidestep*
T-idk: *goes past corner - fluke shots derek without aiming. lol a very superstitious noscope - lol i kno noscope is for snipers but imaging a 50.cal noscope to the head, brain everywhere lol :)*

I still can't believe this show (and Reaper, and Life on Mars) was cancelled.......... but 90210 and 1 tree hill and gossip girl and melrose place and vampire diaries and other crap are still alive and kicking.
this is bullcrap.

His first death is like when your first pet died, at first you didn't realize he was dead, but when he was buried in the cometary, you finally realized he wasn't coming back it was just a major shock factor.
MPizzal 2 years ago
Everyone should tell the SYFY channel to get off there A** and buy this show this is the perfect show to be in there lineup. Now that battlestar Galactica is done this could be there new golden egg. Come on SYFY terminator fans will love your butts forever if you do this an we are many.
greyfox129 2 years ago 2
This death was an insult they killed him like he was an extra on set. Derek deserved a heroes death. Fox was high they ment to cancel dollhouse and wrote the wrong show to get canceled. Screw you FOX you are a studio with out honor nor respect to shows or fans who watch your sorry channels.
greyfox129 2 years ago
The death was so shocking and memorable precisely because of how "BAM!" it was. Highly realistic too. It'll be remembered in a good way for a very long time.
TheSecondQuest 2 years ago 2
Eh I guess we just have different opinions of it but it still was a great episode cause it made viewers remember that. None of there favorite characters were safe in the world of terminator. It would be nice to see a channel do a spin off of the Reese brothers they made them into one of the most interesting characters you want to know more about. there is allot to tell from them.
greyfox129 2 years ago
I think it was a huge SHOCK-factor, no heroic slomo bullshit, really had an impact on me!

I would have had him checking out the nanny, then get shot in the head after looking up at the terminator. It would have said something about how much he really does care about people, which is ultimately why he hates the machines as much as he does.

Awsome episode.. Why did fox cancell this show?. it was one of the best shows out there.
Red89111 2 years ago 2
i guess people are complaining because of the way it was done the scene. he just gets killed like a fuckin extra playing a cop in the way sort of thing. but in one way very realistic and quite cold. but on the other such a well established character in my opinion deserved a bit more emotion.
1988martin 2 years ago 8
@1988martin I think the scene is great because no one hast expected it :)
For about 5 minutes ago I watched the scene... Most emotional in the series I think... I just thought "What da hell?"

Derek is just walking down the hall and BAM!!... he is dead!!!
Aargh! It's soo realistic and yet completely pisses me off!! AAAAARRRRGH!!!
FastestFalcon 2 years ago
i dont see why everone's bitching 'bout the way he got blown off. fosh fiedmen said that it was going to happen, albeit more than i expected it to, but then he said/hinted that through time-travel any one could be brought back, though he died once, and that ver of him is gone his soul lives on in each rendition of him which is brought about through altering time. so i was extatic when he came back!
halfbreed1426 2 years ago
I was pissed when Derek died, but at least he died in a realistic fashion.
TitaniusAquarius202 2 years ago
i was at my friends watching this on a 50inch HD tv (his tv is f-ing awesome). he changed channels during the first commercial. when he turned it back on i see Derek laying on the floor with a bullet in his head. i was like WTF. thats some BS. and i missed it. thank god for dvr recorders. went home and watched it over and over and over.
Thanks for the upload!

Derek Reese clearly states he hasn't seen John Connor in a while, which means he won't get many scenes with John, thus he can be reduced to a mere extra.
