When I listen to this song I feel like a hash smoking janissary, swaggering and tweaking my moustache with squinty red eyes, riding in the capadocian wilderness
@cjwalsh91 Shut up, you nerd! You know about a thousand ways to say "please punch me, sir!" hehe. Anyhoo... I LOVE this song. I've heard a bit of Koray's stuff but this was a new one to me. AMAZING! Especially with the visual experience.
@Maleshevich You can use both, as Koray sings "Cemalım" like the standard pronounciation, but the folk-song is noted more correctly as "Cemalim" on the inlay of the LP. The most correct spelling would be "Cemâlim" with a long "a" and soft "l" as used in former times.
A view of the inlay: img189.imageshack.us/img189/3292/cemalim.jpg
Oh yeah, a good quality version finally! And thanks for the info as well, it's nice to know at least portions of the lyrics... A Turkish friend of mine told me that Cemalim means "my Cemal"...
The lyrics can be translated as this. Note, that this folk-song was originally written from the view of Şerife, the wife of Cemal, a member of a renowned family from the village of Karlık, near Ürgüp in the Cappadocian region. Cemal who was well-known and beloved was killed by an intrigue. The folk singer Refik Başaran made this song of Şerifes mourning.
Erkin Koray changes between first and third person, intending he is Cemal.
@cappuccino81 Be happy Ürgüp, there is no smoke above you. My horse is young, its stall doesn't hold it (Original: Your horse..., as all is written originally to Cemal). Your son is to small, doesn't take your place. My Cemal, my cemal, my weakened Cemal! Look, you are full of blood now, my Cemal! They saw that I left Ürgüp. They knew from the gallop of my white horse. They have decided to kill me. My Cemal, my cemal, my weakened Cemal! Look, you are full of blood now, my Cemal!
you know, it's always tricky when you listen to music in a language you don't understand, you kind of hesitate to find the translations of the lyrics, cause the music is so great and you don't wanna be disappointed if the lyrics turn out to be crappy...
So, it's great to know that Erkin Baba has great lyrics besides great music!
Bijelo Dugme's got really bad lyrics and most of their music is stolen from somewhere, but they did have some interesting moments in their career, i must admit...
you should check out Igra Staklenih Perli, though, a great band.

They did two studio albums in the late 70s, and people compared them to Can and Pink Floyd...
Now they've formed again, can't wait to see them live...
Wow. I had no idea that this video existed. This whole album (Elektronik Turkuler) rocks. Fell in love with it the second I heard it. Now I got to hunt down some of my other favorite Turkish garage rock. Thanks for uploading the video! Great quality too!
hell yeah!!! this is super trippy stuff!!! I love it!! footage looks very clear!! never heard of this dude so thanks for the upload!! im just curious as to why a lot of the turkish bands of this era had such long songs. Like 3 Hur el, and Edip Akbayram. was ther a particular reason or did these dudes just love to jam!!
@eektherigo Nice to see that you like it. :) Erkin Koray is one of the fathers of Turkish Rock music , and still active giving concerts.
There might be two reasons for the long songs: the impact groups like the Doors had, but much more important, Turkish music itself. Turkish music is very open to improvisation. This song e.g. is a old folk song.
@cappuccino81 that explains a lot!! The doors improvised a lot in there live shows and I have heard other traditional turkish artists that rock out and solo for like 10 minutes. Love the imporvisations because the instruments turkish musicians use are so unique!! One is a guitar with super long strings, then the other sounds like a very low pitch saxaphone. Excuse my ignorance for not knowing the names of the instruments ha ha ha ha.
@eektherigo No problem, it was well described. :)) The guitar you mean is called "saz" (or "bağlama"), as "saz" can refer to every instrument. The other instrument you mean is probably the "zurna".
Ya bu yabancılar Erkin Koray'ı bizden daha çok benimsemiş,bizden daha çok sevmiş,burada hiç türk yok mu

@Maleshevich You are welcome, I am happy to see another "Erkinist". ;) My best wishes to Serbia, too!
PS: Is there any good 60's/70's band from Serbia/Former Yugoslavia you can advice? I only know "Bijelo Dugme", and only their first album.
