What I like about her is that she's a genuine, real, and good person. It was a really good move on Layton's part to place her on the ethics committee.
@PatrickRoss45 She won the election with legitimate votes. Two weirdos alleging their signatures were forged (under very strange circumstances. do you really think they're telling the whole story?) on nomination papers doesn't change the fact that the voters chose her. The point of the nomination process is to keep irrelevant people off the ballot, and she clearly wasn't that. The matter is settled.
@Rhuddlan I'm going to give you an opportunity to be clear about this. Are you calling Rene Young, who says his signature was falsified on Brosseau's nomination form, a liar? Are you calling those people who said they were asked to sign after being told the nomination forms were a petition, liars? I'd like you to be very clear about this.
@PatrickRoss45 Thanks for the opportunity? Are you pretending to be an interrogating lawyer? Take a deep breath please. These are youtube comments, not a grand jury trial.
What I said and am saying is that the accusations of forgery are very strange. Either way, someone is not telling the whole story. Are you happy blithely accepting the allegation that Brosseau's campaign committed forgery (a very serious allegation. I'll give you an opportunity to be clear!) without knowing the whole story?
@Rhuddlan In the case of René Young, it looks to me like he signed his wife's name to the papers without her knowledge. Then when she found out that her name was on the papers, he invented this whole story rather than admit to it. There's a reason it smells like Weiner's improbable "hacking" story.
Either way, it doesn't matter because a) they had enough signatures to validate the nomination even without these guys, and b) she won the election fairly, which counts for thousands of signatures.
@Rhuddlan Pardon me. Are you trying to say that you know for a fact that Rene Young signed his wife's name to the papers without her knowledge, or are you alleging this? Be very clear about this. Frankly, this story smells nothing like Weiner's "hacking" story. Not when one considers that the NDP also posted falsified educational credentials to the websites of various candidates (Including, as I recall, Brosseau's.)
@PatrickRoss45 You need to spend more characters thinking critically and less characters on paranoid accusations and commands for me to be very clear.
Obviously I am not trying to say I know that for a fact. No one knows anything for a fact about this situation, which is why I am telling you to calm down and stop making accusations. You don't like the NDP. We get it. You're allowed to not like the NDP. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't think critically before jumping on this crazy bandwagon.
@Rhuddlan So you do NOT know for a fact that Rene Young forged his wife's signature, and you're simply floating an unfounded allegation. Thank you.
BTW, it's not about anyone liking or not liking the NDP. The NDP is obligated to follow elections rules, just like everyone else. They didn't. Someone in the Brosseau campaign committed electoral fraud, and your only justification for that seems to be that they got away with it.
@PatrickRoss45 You're confused about how this works. Someone alleges the NDP committed fraud. That means either the NDP lied or the person making the allegations lied. I do not know for sure which it is. Neither do you. All I am saying is that based on what we know (which is clearly not the whole story), it seems more likely that René Young is the liar.
You think it's terrible to suggest Young might be lying but fine to suggest the NDP are. Why? Do you have any logic, or just hatred of the NDP?
@Rhuddlan We've already seen that the NDP lied about the educational credentials of its candidates, attributing degrees to them that they do not hold. Brosseau was one of those candidates. Not only have we already seen that the NDP lied, but the Brosseau campaign lied as well.
I'd say there's better reason to believe the NDP is lying than there is to suspect that Rene Young is lying The latter is a mere assumption. The former has been demonstrated.
@PatrickRoss45 We know that the website for REB said she graduated from a school when she actually left shortly before completing her degree. Those are the facts. We do not know that there is a systematic pattern of deception in the NDP ranks based on a single error on a single backwater webpage. That is a crazy extrapolation you are making, and it's no way supported by the facts.
It's looking more and more like you have some strange anti-NDP rage distorting your judgement here.
@Rhuddlan So you admit that the REB campaign lied about her education. Yet you would prefer that I assume that Rene Young -- someone who has given no indication that hehas lied -- is a liar, rather than reach the sound conclusion that an NDP campaign that conducts itself dishonestly -- even in the absense of their candidate -- would conduct itself dishonestly.
I think someone's logic IS distorted here, but we can both see it is not mine.
@PatrickRoss45 No one said anything about lying! There was a discrepancy on her webpage. That is all I know, and that is all you know. You don't know they lied, but you keep making the same mindless accusation.
I didn't vote NDP, and I wouldn't have voted for Brosseau. I don't know her campaign staff, and I don't know that they aren't all crooks and liars. All I'm asking for is evidence, and all you give is crazy accusations. A court can investigate, but you're clearly a waste of time.
@PatrickRoss45 Do you understand how this works? It's a discrepancy but not _necessarily_ a lie. There are a number of possible causes for a discrepancy, one of which is a lie. Based on the facts we have, we have no way to know what the true cause was.
So based on no facts, you claim to know for sure that the cause of the discrepancy was a deliberate lie. How do you know that? How are you so certain in ruling out the other options?
You're obviously picking the explanation you want to believe.
@Rhuddlan When a campaign is preparing their website, it seems to any rational person that they have two choices: they can either submit the candidate's educational credentials truthfully, or they can do so untruthfully. I find it exceedingly difficult to believe what you're trying to sell me here: that the sigs weren't forged, that Rene Young is lying, or that the Brousseau education lie ismerely an "error". It ads up to a pattern of deceit you're willfully and deliberately ignoring.
@PatrickRoss45 Are you ignoring the nuance of what I'm saying on purpose, or are you just not able to grasp it?
I am not saying any of the things you're accusing me of saying. I'm saying, very simply, that we do not have enough information to make a for-sure accusation on either the website or the nomination papers. I am saying to you: hold on, calm down, and think. There are other, more probable possibilities. You don't have solid evidence for any of the serious accusations you're making.
@Rhuddlan I know the idea that you need to provide an argument based on facts and sound logic has never occurred to you, but sadly, this is what you'll have to do. Expecting people to simply accept your arguments when neither the facts nor anything resembling logic supports them is the sign of someone entirely too impressed with themselves.
Face it: you lost this argument. Flat-out lost. Cope.
@PatrickRoss45 I should add that you are utterly alone in insisting that the error on the website constituted a deliberate lie. No one else -- whether Conservative, Liberal, or BQ -- is trying to argue that case, because there is no evidence.
Errors on websites happen, especially on websites for candidates that are running as token representatives. You have to be both extremely paranoid and totally immune to reason to think there's good reason to treat this as anything but a sloppy error.
@Rhuddlan I'm not even REMOTELY the only one who believes that the Brousseau "error" is an error at all. Not even remotely.
I suppose you would like me to believe it's just a COINCIDENCE that the "error" on Brousseau's website makes her SEEM more qualified, as opposed to a college barmaid who lacked the commitment to even show up in her riding ONCE during the election?
@PatrickRoss45 I would also like you to name for me one other credible source who accuses the Brosseau campaign of deliberately falsifying her education. It can be an MP of any party, any major news source, or even her rivals in her riding. You won't find one, because there is no evidence. No one is going to humiliate themselves by making the sort of far-out, uncritical accusations you're slinging around here.
Brosseau was totally unqualified with or without her degree. You make no sense.
@Rhuddlan Quite frankly, it's become perfectly clear that there is no amount of evidence you are prepared to consider. The misrepresentation of her educational credentials and the testimony of Rene Young -- which, as I am not prepared to call him a liar (as you have) -- are enough.
Brousseau should step down and run in a by-election. That she has declined to do so speaks volumes about her unsuitability for Parliament, let alone the Ethics committee.
@PatrickRoss45 I didn't call him a liar. Again, you are unable to follow my point. I said that it's at least as likely he was lying as the NDP, and we have no evidence showing which are the real liars. You are the only one who has been throwing out accusations of lying.
The case is closed to you because you automatically believe anything that discredits the NDP and automatically ignore everything that doesn't. With people like you calling for a by-election, I'm not surprised she's ignoring it.
@Rhuddlan Come up with a point worth following, and I'll take it into consideration. You've certainly spared no effort whatsoever in suggesting that Rene Young forged his wife's signature himself and lied about it. You even suggested that was "more likely" than NDP dishonesty, and thus should be accepted under Occam's Razor.
I believe what the evidence tells me. If Rene Young says he didn't sign the nomination papers, I believe him...
@Rhuddlan ...if he says his wife's name, as it appears on the nomination form contains spelling errors (is he REALLY "likely" to misspell his wife's name?), I believe him.
When the NDP is caught dead to to rights posting falsified educational credentials on their candidates' websites, I stop believing them. I start to see this behaviour as what it clearly is: calculated deceit.
You can rage against the facts all you want, but facts are facts. Sorry they don't support your argument. (Not.)
@sgtcrab1 If you think a pulse is sufficient qualification to govern a G8 country, then, sure, she's fully qualified. But she has no experience that would in any way prepare her for the complex business of government.
But let's be very clear. She wasn't elected because of any of her personal qualities, good or bad. She was elected because of Jack Layton and the orange crush. A donkey could have been elected in that riding under the NDP banner.
@Rhuddlan Moreover, you seem to be avoiding the detail that it's illegal to submit falsified documents to Elections Canada. One falsified signature invalidates the entire nomination form. Brosseau should be able to repeat her election victory in a bi-election. If Elections Canada going to irresponsibly decline to hold her to this obligation, the NDP should have held her to it. They didn't, so now they wear this case of electoral fraud.
@PatrickRoss45 Apply Ockham's razor here. Which is more likely: that an NDP campaign committed massive fraud to obtain nomination signatures they didn't actually need, including at least one canvasser inexplicably forging the signature of a woman he had never met on a supposed "heart and stroke" petition he could have gotten anyone to sign? Or that a husband was a little sneaky behind his wife's back about which political party he supported?

@Rhuddlan Is she governing a G8 country ? That is news to me.
She might not have any experience, but she is certainly more intelligent than many conservative MPs.

Only a rabid partisan would think the first.
Rhuddlan 8 months ago
@Rhuddlan Only a rabid partisan would assume the latter when all the available evidence indicates the former.
