hi....i play keyboard....but dont like the way i play it....i really love jazz music..and thats what i want to learn. can u please help me please.....
This is great and i will try and employ some of this. I play by ear but want to learn how to read. Keep these videos coming, pay no attention to the haters!! Carry on young man!
Thank you for your brilliant and concise comments, Mr. Obama. Since you need considerably more musical expertise to address me, I'll just consider the source.
Have a really wonderful life, dickweed. Love to all, Johnny
You have GOT to be kidding. As a professional pianist, I can tell you with certainty that this poor slob can't play his way out of a paper bag. He should be teaching anything but music. This is the WORST.
i agree with you completely. but being a pianist who has NEVER had any piano lessons before and learned by ear and can only read chords.. videos like this help - where there's a visual and it's simple and quick.
@TheLusers Upon what do base that comment ? What does being a decent human being have to do with offering some constructive criticism? You obviously know nothing about music, otherwise you'd realize that this totally non-talented dude should DEFINITELY NOT quit his day job!! The LAST thing he should be doing is teaching music!
I completely agree with you about melody. Playing ump-teen thousand notes at 200 bmp is all well and fine, but you don't leave enough room for the instrument to speak clearly. When I play out or even when I'm listening that is something I keep in my mind.
he's actually good! PLEASE stick with piano and do not wander off in to percussion. it makes you look like think you know what you're doing when you really don't. where as in piano you DO know what you're doing soooo... yeah. stick to piano
Yeah, Jazz is soething that requires TONS of theory. Its one of the last genre's of music I've yet to venture into because it can be so abstract. You can't learn real jazz by trying to mimic. You have to feel it.
When your left hand is on a chord, does your right hand mess with the scale that goes with that chord? Ex: when performing D minor chord, is your right hand limited to the D minor scale or is it free to mess around with notes that aren't in the D minor scale?
@Brandon18valensi yes, see for example: "Sticking within the scale’s note range is known as Diatonic harmony. As you advance, you’ll learn that it’s possible to add in notes outside the Diatonic scale, but for beginning it’s best to get very comfortable with just staying in the Diatonic Key."
I like this idea of space between notes and musical pharses. The spacing between phrases allows the listener to digest what they are hearing and to appreciate it to a higher level.
beginners: theory is very important and when i was ready to learn about it, i did. and that, of course, made sense out of the things i discovered by playing along with records and other musicians. but, i wouldn't approach music (especially jazz!) from such a dry, academic standpoint. USE YOUR EARS. play along. your ears will tell you what works and what doesn't. and, in time, the underlying theory will make sense. because, sadly, if you don't have "big ears", you will never be any good at jazz.
@jaimepaullamb what do you mean? if you don't know the notes, how are you supposed to do that? I'm not questioning you, I'm just trying to understand how it works
@jaimepaullamb do you mean to actually have every major third, minor third, 7 chord, and major scale memorized? I mean, I know how to figure major scales out, but I don't have them all memorized.
this is a really good intro to jazz piano. for some of the beginners i think you should try to get a little more experience with piano before you try jazz. although i think that jazz i easier to play than classical piano i think that to discuss and learnin jazz especial online teaching i much harder.
I agree with Beginnerkeys, I think you play very well but I had to ask myself what did I learn from this video and I did not have an answer. Please take in consideration who your audience is and what you want to leave them with
When you demonstrate, could you be more exact in what chords and keys you play. For example, you say 1,6,2,5.What chords and keys are you playing? Also, you say something about pentatonic, what is that and what keys are they? While you play, inform your listeners what you are playing. I am a beginner and need clarifying. Thanks.
By 1-6-2-5 he means the chords starting on the different steps of the C Major scale. Ex. A is the sixth note therefore A is 6. So 1-6-2-5 means C Major, A minor, D minor, G major.
The C major triad has C E G. If you count the half steps from C to E, there are four. If you lower that 3rd (so it is 3 half steps from C) to E flat, that makes it minor. So now if you play a Dm triad (D F A) and count the half steps from D to F it is 3 half steps. Raise that F to an F# giving you 4 half steps from D to F# you will have yourself a D Major Chord. Try it with the rest of the scale. 4 half steps for the 3rd for major, 3 for minor. The 5th will always be 7 half steps from the root
@NapSeason but do we follow the modes rigorously in this case? maybe not because he uses notes that are apart from C natural scale? i don't know much i'm asking so things can beat right in my head!..thanks!
