"Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day..." my favourite verse. If I may say this myself, the Hallé Youth Choir, of which I am a member, sing this one very well at Christmas :)
It's a bit of a shame that each verse has practically the same arrangement, as it makes things a bit boring. But that's just me, and, in a way, this version reflects the simplicity of it all.
@lunaticonthegrass111 I agree with you, but in such instances, it is the responsibility of the choral director to create nuance through dynamics and tempo changes. It wouldn't matter as much That each verse is arranged the same if the verses were at least presented differently.
I too first came across this hymn way back, but for me it was in the mid fifties, when I was about six or seven, I was at Rainow C of E primary school in Cheshire in the UK. My little school of just three classrooms has now been converted into a house and I now live in Australia. This hymn however still takes my back to that little school with the joys of winter and snow that can only be appreciated by the very young
Beautiful! I watch these young boys and young men sing. So beautifully devoted to the carol and hymn. The Lord bless their hearts with the faith of which they sing, and bless them with such devotion to this Gospel that their lives become a living carol to our Lord.
I first came across this hymn way back in the mid sixties, when I was about six or seven, singing my little head off at Windle Pilk school.I knew it was a special song even then and it still touches me as much now as it did all those years ago. I'm not at all religious, but it's such a beatiful song that paints a picture.
n the Bleak Mid-Winter Words: Christina Rosetti Music: CRANHAM (Gustav Holst) In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. (continued next post)
Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; But His mother only, in her maiden bliss, Worshipped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can give Him: give my heart.
beautiful as always, though the gentleman right at the end looked either bored or tired couldn't quite work out which. Played this whilst we were having the first big big snow of 2010 (and I do mean as well as what happened earlier in the year).
i love King's Colledge Choir, but someimtes if they went just a very very tiny bit slower with some pieces, it would be even better. for other pieces i mean, this is perfect the way it is.
If you visit Cambridge, how ever long the queue, DO NOT miss an opportunity to be in this famous chapel to hear their choir sing. It is a transforming event which you will not forget.
@Borzoi86 hello, i have always wanted to go and have planned with 3 friends to go this xmas 2010. what time do we have to be there to guarantee a place.?
@2504marcus - I would think you'll need to be in the queue an hour before the service. We were not there in the Christmas season; your queue might be even longer so modify my recommendation accordingly. However long the wait ,you'll be rewarded by the experience. If you know someone who is on staff at King's College that may help you jump the queue (this is just a guess on my part.) Carry your camera quietly and make very sure you have absolutely disabled the flash before you shoot. Blessings!
This is a beautiful hymn which embodies what Jesus really taught us, that it is more important what is in our hearts than how many possessions we have.
@kapitanmcduff Not true, if you listen to the song, that's what it says! You can choose to believe the message or not, but that is the message of the song.

One of the great emotive carols. Anyone not moved by this is far from themselves and needs to return home.
