Your claim would be more accurate had at the turn of the last century, as you could make a good argument that the Palestinians had no real nationalist sentiments at that time. However, as time passed they did begin to develop a national movement. In any case, they certainly have one now. Claiming the "Palestinian nation doens't exist" strikes me as a difficult position to defend.

I have read that his father was an American citizen of Palestinian origin, a former American soldier, even, of Anglican Palestinian background, thus Palestinian. His mother was born in Nazareth. His mother was half Egyptian. He did have Lebanese relatives, which was not unusual. He was born in Jerusalem. Thus, his ties to Palestine on both sides are clear. In most countries, it would make you a citizen or tie to the land.

There were between 400,000 and 700,000 refugees, not a million as the Arabs love to exaggerate. My family is from Aleppo. My grandfather remembers neighbours were friendly, Sunni, Christian and Jewish. But people would come, other groups and government, and to kill members of the Jewish community without having reciprocation. We are indigenous to Israel. In Ottoman times the families moved north to Aleppo for business and safety. But Israel is always our home as it also is for Edward Said (a person who as an Israeli I also admire).

Finkelstein's mother was a survivor of Majdanek; and he draws a clear distinction between the actual Holocaust/Final Solution, as opposed to the political interpretations and misrepresentations of it. The fact that Harvard exonerated Dershowitz is to their deep discredit - the plagiarism charge was valid and supported by evidence; and yet Finkelstein lost his tenure as a result. What a sorry mess.
