Damn, whats up with those teeth? I guess Chicago didn't have a dental plan. Not to mention Terry's leisure suit! These guys were great back then though no doubt about it!
Is there a way this song could get released on a cd? From what I researched this show aired in the winter of 1973. I wish they could put all the music on this show on a record/cd. I know these were live recordings but like this song it is the only recording available..
@ABCGUITAR Rob Lamm (the keyboard player) and the 3 horn players: Lee Loughnane, Jim Pankow, and Walt Parazaider. Bass guarist Pete Cetera, lead guitarist Terry Kath and drummer Danny Seraphine are long gone...
America was once spoiled by great music everywhere you turned, and in 40 years, we have destryoed the culture by allowing Disney to take over and force feed us teeny boppers who wouldn't know music if their life depended on it!
hay when was this video from? the sonny and cher show? looks like around 77. chicago at thair best! to bad terry is gone and danny and pete wont reunite with robert and the horn section. such great music, as popular today as 30 years ago. thanks for the video!
My God! I haven't seen this clip for decades... decades! Not since 1972 when I was a student at Providence College. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this precious piece of video!
I can't really see what it matters how Skeletor sings (wtf is up with his chicklets in this vid??) TK just absolutely kicks it OUT on the Fender. He WAS Chicago. Go to CTA and listen to Liberation; Go to III and listen to The Approaching Storm. Go to VII and listen to Song of the Evergreens. They blew as soon as he was gone. Look how P. Cetera went Barry Manilow shortly thereafter. Sad, weak stuff . . .
Don't forget Oh, Thank You Great Spirit on VIII, Poem 58 on CTA, even Lowdown has killer licks, and then there is Sing A Mean Tune Kid on III, and Dialogue on V, it is a wah wah lesson (one more). and Uptown on XI, and most of the instrumental passages on IV. And waht about Byblos on VII, and South California Purples on CTA...I would sit Terry Kath at the same table with Jimi and a few others.
What a kickin' version of this Duke Ellington classic song! Bobby Lamm belts out an excellent vocal, Terry Kath rocks the house down with awsome blues with his Fender Stratocaster, and the rest of the guys played great, too!
A great 1973 memorable performance!!
Ladies & gents..... This was the awsome ORIGINAL band line up! Love it!!
Funny how you can tell the personality of each member by the way they are dressed. So different and yet so alike. No wonder CHICAGO has managed to stay together 40+ years.
Yes that's an apt observation...seems I read somewhere on youtube where the Core four and four newbies have become the Great Eight. Very true. Even when former members have left they have always been polite to one another. Always a Class Act.
Notice that WalT is wearing his "Loose Lips Sink Ships" T-shirt at some point during the movie?
This was one of the shirts he was wearing during the photo sessions for the LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL photo set that was included in the original 4 LP set back in 1971.
Now this is the real Chicago. One of my favorites because it's from the very early years. All the guys were rocking with Terry wailing away. Just terrific. Thanks for posting it.
Wow, what a fantastic performance! I've never seen or heard the band perform this song. Must've been a Duke Ellington tune since they performed it in the Duke's "We Love You Madly" TV special, but arranged Chicago-style. Did you listen to the horn section and Kath's rocking guitar solo? Utterly fantastic! Many thanks for this upload!
I heard Robert Lamm with Chicago a few days ago, and I think his voice has gotten better than it was a few years ago. Listen to him on Stone of Sisyphus in some of the recent concerts. I think his voice sounds wonderfully soulful.
I've been viewing a lot of old middle and newer Chicago clips. Wow how Cetera's bass style had impact. I also love to see them all close together stage wise. I do love Chicago in any year and any lineup, all the arguments/comparisons such a waste of time.
yesyes THAT´S chicago! this must have been 72 or 73 -- they were at their creative peak! listen to chicago V - that´s pure genius!!! robert lamm is one of 20th century´s greatest composers! and terry gave chicago the balls...
heey! Ja zenne: bij mijn filmpje zijn de volgende liedjes gebruikt: Schiffie en Co - De pinguindans ; Aprèsskihut - The A-Team ; Aprésski Zware Jongens - Jodeljump
"The only funny thing I can think about the whole incident," Cetera says, " is that, with my jaw wired together--I actually went on the road a lot sooner than I should have, just because of the economics of everything, -- and I was actually singing through my clenched jaw, singing backrounds, which to this day, is kind of the way I sing. I have a fairly closed mouth, just because of that."
"Four marines didn't like a long-haired rock 'n' roller in a baseball park," Cetera recounts, "and of course I was a Cub fan, and I was in Dodger Stadium, and that didn't do so well. I got in a fight and got a broken jaw in three places, and I was in intensive care for a couple of days."
Above and exerpt from Chicago's box set, 'Group Portrait' booklet.
My previous comment wasn't made in slander or hate towards Peter Cetera. I'm a big fan. It's just all observation. I don't deserve a 'thumbs down' for that. Jeez. I want nothing more than to have Pete do one more concert with Chicago. Just ONE more.
i used to think peter was chewing gum.. but now i think it has to do with his jaw. sometime in '71 or '72 he had teeth knocked out at Comiskey Park in Chicago by punks who thought he looked like a hippie. someone correct this story if it wrong.. thanks..
djtr58: he had his jaw broken @ Dodger Stadium either May 19th, 1969 or 1971. I seem to think it probably was 1969 as he was recovering at home w/jaw wired shut and heard Walter Cronkite say on TV w/reference to the Moon Landing-' Where do we go from here?' That's where he got the idea for the song of same name.
Thanks for the clarification flashpenguin86. ;-) I thought it was 1969 but not sure. Do you know who wrote this particular song? They did such a terrific performance here. Well they're always great. Am so glad to have had the chance to see them live in concert for 4 decades now. RL and the Horns just as awesome now as they've always been.
The writers were: Edward Ellington, Paul Webster, Sid Kuller. I see that Mr Ellington died in 74---not too long after this show. And about Peter's jaw, he once joked that at the same time Ernie Banks was getting a hit, so was he. Peter has a wicked sense of humour. :)
Yes it would sure seem that way. ;-) I understand Peter played the accordian before learning guitar. One can only imagine the one liners and sense of humour that emerged out of necessity from having to play the accordian! But hey: my uncle plays the accordian at family reunions and it comes in handy when everyone requests " their song." Thanks again for the info.
OMG!!! This is the first time for me to notice the teeth--bless his heart!! I noticed he had a HUGE smile in the 25 or 6 to 4 video at the Caribou Ranch!!
Boy that was nifty! i have never heard that song before. It kinda showcased most of the band.(Bob was cute with his shiny suite)Terry and the horns ROCKED!
What a great live performance. I'll bet Chicago's version did old Duke proud. Sad, though, to see Terry. Boy was he the most under rated and under appreciated guitarist in music history. Good thing we have him on video. This performance will never get old.

Chicago (original band) was simply phenomenal! ..if you're a fan..a must read is Danny Seraphine's "Street Player" book

No references at all.

Duke Ellington actually asked Chicago to appear on this show!
It seems he was a great fan of their music.
The Chicago horn section all went up to him at the end of the show, and said what an honour it was to play on the night.
The Duke replied "The honour was all mine!"
