Geisha from elsewhere often dress like this. It's not unusual at all. That's what makes the Kyoto geiko so celebrated, the fact that their uniforms are SO traditional, with the katsura and shiro nuri.
In a book ive got it says that usually, after a year or so, geiko (geisha) do not wear the traditional make up all the time, perhaps only for a very special occasion. Unlike the maiko (apprentice geiko) who wear it all the time. Hope that helps!
Im actually living in halls at the mo so i dont have all my books and i cant for the life of me remember the name of it! Its a great book though with amazing photographs. As soon as i find out the name il tell you! ^.^
@awesomemlet Hi, sorry its been a while, if your still interested the book i was talking about is called - Geisha: A unique world of tradition, elegance, and art by John Gallagher. :)
This is one of those things that looks easy, but is probably a lot harder than it looks.

I'm trying to learn how to mimic a geisha's unique style of singing on guitar... It's so hard!

They're not geiko from Kyoto.

These ones a bit more casual.
