I know everyone is saying how Angela will always be the best Mrs. Lovett and such but I really think it's just personal preference. I, for one, prefer Depp and Carter's version a lot more. People say they thought the movie was too dark but I don't think the story fits well with a comedic overtone, and that's just the way my taste is. I prefer dark and calculating, not dark and comedic. It's interesting how the characters compare between the movie and stage version.
@katherineisaballer69 In the movie, they made Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett look young and gorgeous, when they should be middle-aged and not perfectly good looking :D of course, Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp both did a good job, but they have heavily narroewd the vein of irony of the original musical, in my opinion. :)
@katherineisaballer69 yeah because i guess out there in the real world all the insane and very poor women of the 1800's are all smokin' supermodels, right?
i have been searching for the 93(?) version of "nothing 's gonna harm you" with Lansbury and NPH, any suggestions? it is one of the only songs i can remember without the music and i have been singing it to my son since i found out i was pregnant.
Angela Lansbury is Mrs. Lovett. I watched the 1982 filmed stage production the other night, and I would love to play the part, just because she did so well.
@tammyd963 Ok , so she's not a singer... she IS Mrs Lovett!!! I saw this show, and from the opening whistle (literally) . . . I was riveted, this was the best show I've seen on Broadway, and thanks to the 'tube' I get to see little glimpses from my past.
@tammyd963 She can so what a joke she won a tony for this she is acting as a poor women and she does it beautifully she is so good when Angela dies the lights will be dimmed for an hour and a theatre will be named after her. She is so good she is beyond human
omg Lansbury is the most entertaining Lovett! I have seen many stage productions of Sweeney and have found that the Lovett's arent nearly as good as Lansbury

Angela Landbury is absolutely my favorite actress of all time! Sondhiem actually wrote Lovett with Angela in mind to play her.

Most "singers" can't do Sondheim justice. He's really about character and subtext, subjects musicians are not trained to handle generally.

Mrs. Potts??? Why… where did you go wrong!

@MarkLatimerRussell She went wrong when she played Mrs. Potts -- because she originated this role
fifteen years before Beauty & the Beast was released.

You gotta admit, the girl as the original Johanna isn't bad looking. She's seen very well at 1:49. (Pause to see her)
