I ran Track in College. This argument is stupid. It seems like someone is confused here. I don't want Pancakes without Syrup or Peanut Butter and Jelly without the bread and I certainly do not want strength without technique. Being stronger will not make you faster, but learning technique will not maximize your speed if you are weak. WE NEED BOTH.
Dude, take a physics course. Both aspects are integral to running fast... strength is key for propulsion, but technique is key for all the other factors (I.E. maximizing energy expenditure, limiting drag, muscular coordination, etc...).
Anyone who only focuses on one aspect or the other is limiting themselves. Optimally, you want a nice balance between the two.
Remember that strength training is actually part muscular tissue development and part muscular coordination development.

@Mysonchanz i realise that, as a track athlete i do core exercises and olympic lifts but it doesnt make you faster, it just reduces injury, increases lactate tolerance and makes your stature better so that technique can be improved. I think Elliot has his words mixed up his principles are right but faster isnt the right word. no matter how many pull ups, press ups or squats i do i still wont get faster il get fitter and stonger but not faster.
for all you noobs the best way to run a faster 40 is to run a 40 yard dash. to run a faster 20, run a 20. on flat ground too. no sled dragging, no uphill, no bands, no ankle weights plz no ankle weights. jus freakin sprint, case closed. if u train slow then u will b slow
- I'll put my money on the highly skilled guy in the Pinto. The regular guy in the pimped out racecar will simply crash or run himself off the road. Having more strength or speed without having the coordination to properly utilize that energy will increase the likelihood of injury. Physical power, like money, can get you into trouble of you have a bunch of it without knowing how to properly manage it.
- Next, you are presenting a false dichotomy regarding strength/speed training vs. technique training, there is no reason why both cannot be trained simultaneously. You can bet that NFL players do specific technique training along with their strength training. Ideally the strength training exercises will also enhance coordination and flexibility at the same time.
i mean ..you can have some speed without strenght. Look at desean Jackson. He was on the fastest players in the league . and hes only 175. and probably couldnt bench press a bar.
Has anyone ever seen a weak looking or skinny sprinter? You don't because you don't generate that kind of power without muscle. You can train your body so it can develop more fast twitch or slow-twitch muscle fibers aka muscle remodeling. The body will adapt to the stresses placed upon it. If you don't stress it, then muscle will atrophy in response to disuse. That is why bone thickens when stress is placed upon it (aka Wolf's Law) or muscle grows when stressed (hypertrophy). Good points Elliot
Part 1: This is ridiculous. Strength is the wrong word. Being strong doesnt make you fast. instead having a good power to weight ratio helps via olympic lifts etc. MORE IMPORTANTLY Speed in human beings is natural you either have it or you dont e.g a sprinter will have 70%+ fast twitch muscle compared to 50% of the average human being. its very hard to make anyone considerably quicker thru weights specially if that peson is an ectomorph.
@normyg strenght is speed and explosiveness. Or i think explosiveness is speed and strenght IDK. But I see what ur saying its very hard to get faster by lifting weights. Alot of olympic sprinters dont even lift weights they do plyometrics. U either have speed or u dont.
@normyg he doen't mean....you have to be to lift heavy weights 'strong body', but having a 'strong body' as strenghtening the necessary muscles DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for generating speed, ie: fast twitch, core, etc.....
So I understand where you are coming from but lets flip it... lets say you are in that souped up stock car with little to no skills... what type of position would you be in if you were under performing to the skilled guy in a pento?
I ask because I'm probably in better athletic shape than 90% of the other DBs on my team but last year because of my skill (which I'm working on relentlessly) level I was benched all season. Do you still recommend lifting crazy at this point for me or skill stuff?
@Realkillaor sometimes being fast is good i know this because the varsity team in my school went up against this one guy that was fckn good and his forty was a 4.3
Speed Strength Coach here, I fully agree with you on this you have to have a foundation of strength in order to have speed. You look at some of the top sprinters in the world they are squating there body plus, ben jonhson could squat 500lbs. plus had the ability to run fast. You can do all the sprint mechanics in the world but it means nothing if you dont have the horse power or the strength to go with it.
ok im a freshman in a community college i ant to get my body and speed right i left high school 2009 but i need to get in shape for college ball im 225 6 ft even and i play middle linebacker AND SOME IN THE BACK FEILD RB
hey man, good stuff. but i have a question. im only 15 teen just finished my JV season and am now move up to varsity :) hah and well i noticed they are all hella fast. i am a half back (running back) lol and i run a 4.9- 5.0 $0 yard dash. i think this is way to slow. i am very big with my weight lifting. i mean i squat 340 and only weigh 155 :o crazy right? why am i not so fast. i think it might be cuz i have a kinda big belly? and ideas on how to rid the belly? or increase my speed? thanks
Hey bro im a sophmore in highchool playin JV football right now. Im 206 running a 5.1 40. I wanna stand out with speed. Please send me some advice and tips,.
I agree with you, u have to teach the body 2 do what you want it to do after you have built it because 4 1 example after strength training your stride would be changed as well as other things, good vid mate gunna look at your others..
Bad analogy. I agree strength is important for speed, but it is only the trainers who don't have the ability or knowledge to teach sprint technique who make your argument. Why choose between strength and skill. Both are important, and a good trainer can address both.
Thank you. You seem like the only one on here I agree with. He made a fantastic SALES pitch for the ignorant to sell himself. I know many fast people that just run and never lifted at all, many. Bo Jackson was a perfect example, he never lifted weights or ran, just played baseball. Now on that same note, imagine what he would have accomplished had he lifted efficiently. Thanks for having your own thoughts, it's refreshing to read.
Hulse you hit it right on the head brother! That is exactly the way I train my athletes. I argue everyday with "trainers" about this same concept. Keep up that good work!

what type of squatting do you advise? Where do you stand on the olympic lift variations?
TheRow2 1 year ago
In your Program it says keep the reps 3-5 in the early off season an up to 10 in the end of offseason.
Does it apply for Vertical Jumps and broad jumps ie. Superspeed
I mean like is it just 3-5 reps or is it like 3-5 reps for 3-5 sets?
