The accident summary: The Pilot wasn't even supposed to land on that carrier. He was gonna do a touch and go but something went wrong with the hook. It went down and the plane snagged the wire. But the pilot still had the plane's engines on full power, causing his plane to slide off the carrier.
I was one of those men running after that pilot. This was on board the USS America CV66 in 1982. The pilot was Lt. Charlie Boh of the World Famous Bluehawks VA-72. I was a Plane Captain in that squadron from 1981-1984. I also worked in the Ready Room with the Pilots. Go Bluehawks!
Courage is the Name of this Guys. Each one a true hero, in spite of the war do not deserve such thing! War - a way to fill the pocket and valet of politicians and militars...
ok to ask when you don't know...thrust is pushed to full power when we land in case the wire is missed or skipped (bolter)....the hook failed...the power was coming off but he was unable to stop the aircraft in time. the aircraft dribbled off and the hot engine does not enjoy the cold water. once over the edge the ejection seat is out of the "envelope" or safe ejection criteria; therefore an ejection is required. the next thing coming at you is an aircraft carrier.
Why did it explode? If the throttle was stuck, wouldn't the plane just go forward into the drink since the pilot is no longer on the brake? --- Doesn't know anything about jets btw :P
@rabidcujo I suspect that is a Chance Vought A-5. At first I thought it was the old familiar F-8 but the cantilever wing was not deployed for landing as is required for an F-8.
Wondering : Wouldn't it be significantly less dangerous to let the plane just fall in the water and then just leave it the normal way (unstrap and open canopy) ; then it is to eject ?? (about 1 in 10 fatality chance)
@DCooninck Unlike passenger planes, they don't float, as soon as the plane hit the water it would be on a one way trip to the bottom, it would probably hit the water nose first too.
@DCooninck Think about it. The pilot has run the engine to military in case he misses a wire he has power to go around. So, the plane would be falling into the water, attitude not quaranteed, with a turbine engine spinning at gee whiz and going to in take cold, dense water immediately. Not a good alternative. Also, having been a Marine aircraft mechanic, I believe your stat on ejections to be faulty. In any event, this guy is lucky and needed a case of charmin at sick bay.
@DCooninck Not at all. There's no way to predict how the plane will hit the water or the ground. If you wait to find out, you're probably not going to make it out in time anyway.
the A7 caught the hook, went to mil power, than the arresting gear wire slacked up, before the pilot could go to idle, and the rest was history, that is what the ejection seat is for. good job to the flight deck crew and the pilot for know when to say when.
Massive props to the deck crew who were on that parachute so quickly. if the pilot would have been allowed to slip into the water/under the ship it could have been alot worse.
I was there when it happened. His throttle was stuck in full military thrust. The one injury he did get was a hip injury and nasty bruises. I was with VA-46 and VA-72 was our sister squadron.
No offence onethingiseek but you weren't sitting in the cockpit looking at nothing but water! Who knows, it might have been the guy's maiden carrier landing, in which case he was probably over tense just doing that let alone dealing with a life and death decision right on the bow of a fast moving mountain of metal. I have no idea if the cause was driver error or aircraft us but I hope I would have decided to do exactly as he did. Test pilots are the heroes...the rest of us?...mere mortals :-)
It depends - there will be a medical review of the pilot. Quite many have quite much damage after the first ejection. It's not uncommon either to have so much damage that you will never fly again....
And they are not grounded normalt if they otherwise are ok - just transferred to a another type of aircraft, without the possibility to eject....
Bet he broke all his toes pushing on those brakes. Made a good decision to punch out when he did in my opinion. Looks as if he gave it as long as he could while accessing the situation, then decided it was a bad one and getting worse and so took the action required to give the best chance of a positive outcome for himself i.e grabbed the handle and got the hell outa there!!
throttle got stuck, the plane acceled forward and it was going off the flight deck into the drink, so he was trying to stop it,and he saw that he couldnt, so he decided to eject at the last possible moment
Damn, that guy chucked a beautiful F-8 Crusader because of a stuck throttle. I would have shut the engine off but there was probably no time at all at the end of the ramp.
thats very easy to say when you are sitting at home with your dick in your hand watching spankwire on the other window. But its quite different when you are in the cockpit facing life or death. The engine has to be in full throttle just in case they miss the pass. They can't just turn it off.

You should be more informed before opening your yap.
At touching down pilots must push up to mil power just in case of a bolter. If they catch a wire the power setting won't matter.

hes got one more ejection, you can only eject twice before your grounded, because each time you eject it crushes your spine.
