There seems to be a correlation between lower boost automatics running MAF sensors and compressor flutter - the stock springs are always too strong...problems usually solved with a plumb back bypass valve. True with most sport compact automatics running light pressure turbos factory-stock.

Never heard an HKS SSQ behaving like that. Sure you installed it right and the valve is good? In my experience, my cars have always driven better, felt stronger, and been more streetable when I put HKS valves on them. Think yours is messed up or the install was botched

2) To the poster of this video your having stall problems after bov discharge due to not being recirculated, and the longer discharge means there is still pressure in the intake system. Better to let it out and keep air flowing towards throttle body for faster turbo spool.
for one lay off most professional drag racers use auto . one thing i wanted to no is what is your psi? and how big is you engine ? hks are known for the flutter there mainly ment for being around 20 psi or more for some reason there real stiff i have seen them on stock srt 4's and the run 14 psi and they run really well on them . most of the time when you have flutter is because the bov is set to high or not enough boost or both

Don't listen to the ricers talking about a manual conversion. It is easy to spot manual turbo cars at the drag races, they are the ones on the trailer with a DNQ.

For normal driving in an automatic, you shouldn't really even need a bov. There really isn't much reason you should be going from boost to an instantly closed throttle, at least not often enough that I would fear for the life of the turbo. It certainly isn't bad for the turbo, your MAF based ecu might not appreciate it, but I do wonder how you are driving this car that made you think the HKS wouldn't do the job, oh well. Glad you found a valve to fit your awkward driving style.
a blow off valve or wastegate is used with a vehicle that has a turbo, you dont need a BOV but basically what they do is release backpressure being created from the turbo to stop compressor surge from happening which is bad bad bad

the way you let off the throttle has a lot to do with it surging. I have a 35r on my dsm and at full throttle at 2k rmp itll start surging too. I can get my Tial to sound EXACTLY like that if i let off slow. Interesting none the less, id run one just to see the difference.
Lots of drag cars are automatic for more consistent lap times. And these supercars you speak of aren't switching to automatic gear boxes, they're using tritronic which is very different from a conventional automatic. Mainly because many of them are influenced by formula one cars.
Most peformance/super cars have automatic tranny's that allow manual control of the gears They still have torque converters though. So I'd still consider them automatic. A bit different from the one in a Scion obviously, but still within the same category. Double Clutch tranny's fall under that category as well IMO, like the one in the SL5 AMG .
EVERY video I see of the Synapse guys bashing HKS are sponsored or something. ALLWAYS show the HKS surging, and never the Synapse. I have the HKS, NO adjust screw (fell out) and it never surges. Seen the Synapse surge before tho. People need to know its PREFERENCE! Neither is better or worse. Tho I would not get a Synapse because they go out of their way to make the HKS seem like crap. There is a reason nearly every street high hp turbo car uses them.

This is in response to another comment. We never said that Chris was running a Synapse setup, but that his engine was less built than one of our test cars. It's a Black 5 speed 2006 tC.
Chris has stated repeatedly that his motor only has internals. In fact, a large amount of his car is relatively stock, including the tranny. Our tC's motor has a upgraded pistons, rods, cams, sleeves, etc. It's definitely more built than Chris' "Black Betty".
Up until a year ago, indeed, Chris' Black Betty was for the most part mainly internals...but that also wasn't the main motor he and Eric were planning on using when Jose and I were a main source for his "experimental" ideas lol. However, I lost contact with him when business decisions of moving to CA were contemplated...and again, I can't really talk though cause I don't know exactly what went into your TC's build either...so yeah my bad man lol.
I have a Synapse and it doesn't flutter even at low rpms and high load. You should probably go out and find someone with this BOV/BPV and take a listen for yourself (maybe even drive). The Synapse has a nice crisp, clean sound to it, holds boost very well and throttle response is awesome.
What all of these test are lacking is a very controlled environment, driving on the street sucks, this way all doubts are removed. I want to see the HKS/Greddy/TiAL/APS and whoever PROPERLY set up, then ran.
And show the dyno readout of boost pressure. If you really wanna show off the Synapse, it's what you're gonna have to do (along with proper setup of the competitions BOV/BPV).
Your tests did NOT put both the BOVs through the same conditions. I can LOAD UP ANY BOV at low RPMS and more than likely there will be SURGE if I lift off the throttle just enough to close the throttle body and build pressure between it and the compressor.
Here's the difference. When YOU had the HKS in there, YOU drove at lower RPMs with MORE load. More boost was made and not enough vacuum for the HKS to fully OPEN. The DRIVING you did with the Synapse was with WOT driving and HIGHER revs. When you LET OFF you get MORE vacuum at higher revs thus less surge. When testing the HKS on LOAD, you lifted slightly so the throttle will close thus the HKS not being able to open, therefore compressor surge. You DIDN'T do that with the Synapse.
Actually to tell you the truth the TC is Just not producing enough suction for the HKS SSQV to work fully to its potential. I Have one on my WRX STI and its loud as hell and it sounds great. granted i get backfire cause it makes the car run rich but i can deal with it.
You have no clue what your talking about do you?!?!? First off the reason why his HKS isnt very loud is either the turbo isnt moving as much air as your car either because of less boost or a smaller turbo. Secondly backfire is fuel combusting in your intake manifold. Afterfire is when unburnt fuel combusts in the exhaust side.
The HKS is able to hold very high boost pressure. What is the Synapse rated at/what were you testing it at? I'm looking for something that will hold around 30psi w/ no leaks.
The "flutter dump you are trying to get rid of is still there. The reson whay it is less noticeable on this BOV is 1 it has that redicouls ANTI stall thing added on. Remove the Insert on the HKS and guess what IT DOES THE SAME THING as this Miracle BOV.
For the guys that recirc their BOV, one of the great sidenotes that we've been hearing is that people are getting more vacuum from the engine. This is awesome for helping out their braking by increasing the vac to the brake booster.

the way you let off the throttle has a lot to do with it surging. I have a 35r on my dsm and at full throttle at 2k rmp itll start surging too. I can get my Tial to sound EXACTLY like that if i let off slow. Interesting none the less, id run one just to see the difference.

Lots of drag cars are automatic for more consistent lap times. And these supercars you speak of aren't switching to automatic gear boxes, they're using tritronic which is very different from a conventional automatic. Mainly because many of them are influenced by formula one cars.

Most peformance/super cars have automatic tranny's that allow manual control of the gears They still have torque converters though. So I'd still consider them automatic. A bit different from the one in a Scion obviously, but still within the same category. Double Clutch tranny's fall under that category as well IMO, like the one in the SL5 AMG .

EVERY video I see of the Synapse guys bashing HKS are sponsored or something. ALLWAYS show the HKS surging, and never the Synapse. I have the HKS, NO adjust screw (fell out) and it never surges. Seen the Synapse surge before tho. People need to know its PREFERENCE! Neither is better or worse. Tho I would not get a Synapse because they go out of their way to make the HKS seem like crap. There is a reason nearly every street high hp turbo car uses them.

One of our tC's had a Turbinetics kit and was able to consistently take Evo's from a line. Wait till you see a video of the tC we've been working on ;)

This is in response to another comment. We never said that Chris was running a Synapse setup, but that his engine was less built than one of our test cars. It's a Black 5 speed 2006 tC.
Chris has stated repeatedly that his motor only has internals. In fact, a large amount of his car is relatively stock, including the tranny. Our tC's motor has a upgraded pistons, rods, cams, sleeves, etc. It's definitely more built than Chris' "Black Betty".

Up until a year ago, indeed, Chris' Black Betty was for the most part mainly internals...but that also wasn't the main motor he and Eric were planning on using when Jose and I were a main source for his "experimental" ideas lol. However, I lost contact with him when business decisions of moving to CA were contemplated...and again, I can't really talk though cause I don't know exactly what went into your TC's build either...so yeah my bad man lol.

I have a Synapse and it doesn't flutter even at low rpms and high load. You should probably go out and find someone with this BOV/BPV and take a listen for yourself (maybe even drive). The Synapse has a nice crisp, clean sound to it, holds boost very well and throttle response is awesome.
What all of these test are lacking is a very controlled environment, driving on the street sucks, this way all doubts are removed. I want to see the HKS/Greddy/TiAL/APS and whoever PROPERLY set up, then ran.

And show the dyno readout of boost pressure. If you really wanna show off the Synapse, it's what you're gonna have to do (along with proper setup of the competitions BOV/BPV).

Your tests did NOT put both the BOVs through the same conditions. I can LOAD UP ANY BOV at low RPMS and more than likely there will be SURGE if I lift off the throttle just enough to close the throttle body and build pressure between it and the compressor.

Here's the difference. When YOU had the HKS in there, YOU drove at lower RPMs with MORE load. More boost was made and not enough vacuum for the HKS to fully OPEN. The DRIVING you did with the Synapse was with WOT driving and HIGHER revs. When you LET OFF you get MORE vacuum at higher revs thus less surge. When testing the HKS on LOAD, you lifted slightly so the throttle will close thus the HKS not being able to open, therefore compressor surge. You DIDN'T do that with the Synapse.

Actually to tell you the truth the TC is Just not producing enough suction for the HKS SSQV to work fully to its potential. I Have one on my WRX STI and its loud as hell and it sounds great. granted i get backfire cause it makes the car run rich but i can deal with it.

You have no clue what your talking about do you?!?!? First off the reason why his HKS isnt very loud is either the turbo isnt moving as much air as your car either because of less boost or a smaller turbo. Secondly backfire is fuel combusting in your intake manifold. Afterfire is when unburnt fuel combusts in the exhaust side.

There are quite a few boosted automatic tC's. The threshold seems to be about 250whp though.
That having been said, just wait until you see what we've down with our signature series kit on a manual...;)

The HKS is able to hold very high boost pressure. What is the Synapse rated at/what were you testing it at? I'm looking for something that will hold around 30psi w/ no leaks.

The "flutter dump you are trying to get rid of is still there. The reson whay it is less noticeable on this BOV is 1 it has that redicouls ANTI stall thing added on. Remove the Insert on the HKS and guess what IT DOES THE SAME THING as this Miracle BOV.

For the guys that recirc their BOV, one of the great sidenotes that we've been hearing is that people are getting more vacuum from the engine. This is awesome for helping out their braking by increasing the vac to the brake booster.
