they did this by forcing a puppy on a dead turtle. and I am sure there are many many takes of it where the dog does not want to do this. Go look up the scene where Milo (the cat) falls off the cliff, The producers of this movie killed something like 17 kittens filming that one scene. If you dont believe me, google is your friend.

@TheWakturtle every source I have ever come across has been inconclusive. it's been rumored that X number of animals died during this film, but so far it's all been conjecture because no one has ever been able to come up with any evidence. I just don't know.
