  • very very very good photo

  • i like your hair man. it's really cool :D

  • How much would a book like that cost?

  • why don't you crop? i crop all the time for better composition, is that alright or is no cropping ever better?

  • Thank for sharing! Good information the way it should be. Continue the good work.

  • Jared,

What size are the verticals coming out to? It looks like there is an inch border on the top and bottom, which would bring them to 10x6.67 or so? It is hard to tell from the video.

  • @kmarriner that is pretty close, i do that because i do not crop my images and want to show them full frame.

  • @JaredPolin

I realize you don't crop, I don't either. I was just asking because in a 12x9 page I could drop them in at 8x12 but it wouldn't look goo with only the black showing on one edge, so I am trying to figure out how much border I should use.

  • Hi Jared,

I've applied for Photography for college next year and I have to make a portfolio for the recruiters next month but I have no idea how. I've been told I should stick to one theme, but the problem is that I don't have a particular theme nor I have enough pictures of one theme to fill the book. I do a little bit of still life, macro, landscape, etc. and I was wondering if you think its okay if I included all different themes in the portfolio.

Your reply will be much appreciated!

  • thanks for your sugestions. i made a video-folio of a collection from my digital photo work (Lightsteam). The idea is to use it as a presentation card to art gallerys. I'll post here the result. Feel free to comment... Best regards!

  • lol Jared i had one of those clocks , i think i still have it in my toybox

  • Agree iPad is the way forward, photos looked so much more alive than a book or album.

  • Ipad is definitely great for portfolios

  • what did u study in college?

  • okay so i had that clock too... and i still love it. no clue why that is..

thanks for the adoramapix info. i'm getting a book done by next week.

  • Hey Jared thanks for the great video, question for your photobooks ( you might have mentioned it in your video ) what size did you say yours was again? (for full frame that is so nothing gets cropped or compressed) Was it 12x9?

  • Great video, love the idea using adorama pix book as a portfolio (might try it my self for my first portfolio. I'm currently working on my first portfolio trying to spread my name out now and get my first few gigs in photography. Im only in high school so thanks for your advice love your videos mate.

  • hey thanks for your responses, i have another question which company do you pick for printing album like the second one you picked

  • JARED POLIN! I UPLOAD MY PICS ON A SITE CALLED TUMBLR. ITS MAINLY USED FOR BLOGGING, BUT I USE IT FOR HOST MY PHOTOS BECAUSE ITS REALLY CLEAN LOOKING. HOWEVER, I DON'T HAVE ANY HARD COPIES OF MY PICTURES LIKE YOU DO.

  • Hey Jared, I've seen a few similar comments but no response so I'll ask it as well. What do you think about electronic portfolios? Example: The iPad. I am starting a business in 2011... going to go legit!! And I've been thinking of using the iPad as the way of showing my work. I know some studios use a big flat screen on the wall to display and sell their work. Well this is just a mini portable version of that.... What do you think? Pros? Cons? Let me know!

Thanks again Jared for all you do!!

  • I've seen a few other comments addressing the same thing but no response so I'll ask about it as well.. What do you think about electronic portfolios? Example the iPad? I have an iPad and I carry it in a nice leather case and it looks very professional and I have all of my respectable photos on it. Going to start a business in 2011 and I am thinking of using it as my portfolio. Pros? Cons? Your thoughts?

Thanks again Jared for everything you do for us!!!

  • @xbrandonolsonx I have an ipad as well and it is good for showing work but there is still something to be said when you hand someone something physical in the book form that makes them go wow. When they open up to a two page spread and boom they get hit with a full frame full page print 12x18 that makes an impression. I have a whole gallery portfolio of work that is 30x45 and 40x60 real prints real freaking big.

  • iPad can be a good choice.

  • I have that Fisher-Price clock!!!!!

  • @mipmipmipmipmip sweet.

  • Hey Jared! Nice informative video on portfolios man! I'm currently in the process of getting my portfolio printed. I'm getting the same size book as yours at AdoramaPix (9x12). what is the actual size of the Vertical pictures in your book? i don't want to crop my vertical pictures..Thanks for your input bro! - Earl

  • @earliozz Honestly not sure, drop it in full frame scale it down than see what looks right without cropping.

  • Jared!!! I just broke the LCD screen of my camera( D90) i know i can send it back to Nikon and pay to get it fix. I know how to fix it but im sure that if i open the camera the warranty is not gonna be valid any longer. so, should i send it to repair and do it by myself and lose de warranty? (if i do it it is only gonna be 29 dlls) or i was thinking if i can sell it and get a d7000, well if i can sell my nikon d90 for 800 with the kit lens 18-105

  • @kuatemachu i doubt ur going to get 800 for a d90 w/ a broken screen..

  • @iDoodlie thanks for reply but yea i know i cant, im just saying xD well i can fix it for 29 dlls and then try to sell it, cuz i have it for like 2 months, the question is more that if i should fix it or send it :/

  • would you recommend building a digital portfolio, say like on an iPad or a laptop instead of going through the trouble of creating an actual book?

    THanks for the help.

  • @alzjcz Call me old school... But at least I think a printed photo sell better then on a screen.

  • @alzjcz i have that to but its not the same as physically seeing large size images and turning the pages of the book to see what is next.

  • when you shoot live concerts, do you think you bother the people watching the concert with your big FRO getting in the way?! :P

  • @nwarken nope usually not an issue.

  • Thanks for the tips on portfolios. I love those books..Im looking to build a portfolio myself..thanks for the tips Jared!

  • good job jared! :)

  • Fro, sorry talking about this again but, you will recommend a "cheap" semi-pro lens instead the 18-105mm that comes with D7000? I like taking portraits, so I`m gonna get the D7000 soon with 50mm f/1.8 but I guess i need a general-purpose lens too. Thanks, bro.

  • @xarte jared usually recommends an affordable f/2.8 lens, either sigma 18-50 or a tamron 17-50 as a general lens

  • I have a D3100 and i am trying to start up in photography. the biggest issue is finding things to photograph. Where do you usually find the best places to start? I found that sports photography is probably going to be one of my favorite things to shoot, so what should i get for a lens in this case? and how do you quickly lock one person into focus when running, jumping, etc.? thanks for the help!

  • @kharrison1095 your going to want a longer lens with a fast f stop like a 70-200 2.8 sigma which runs $800 US but will allow you to capture sports extremely well.

  • Fro may know photo, but Fro needs to study the apostrophe, which wasn't necessary here.

  • Nicely done!

  • Thanks for this tip Jared! The book idea is really neat.

  • Loving these Super secret project videos
