I listened to the lyrics cause i'm doing a project on it in humanities. My opinion is that this song is patriotic in a "appreciate what you have" kinda thing. Cause the song is giving a kind of comparison to what we have in America compared to other countries.

I see multiple kinds of Americans: Corporate (big business, economic guys, oil company, rich guys, etc.), Patriotic (The folks who try to keep to pastime American values), Urban/Technology (most middle-class students are an example of this, as well as people who often use some sort of technology), Political (self-explanitory), Religious (self-explanitory), and more.
I'm sure there's more kinds, but I can't really name them all off; just those five groups are whom I'm fully aware of.

Very good song, as all of Mellencamps songs are. They come from the heart. BUT....the flag is backwards. Stars are always in the upper left (viewers prospective), whether the flag is horizontal or vertical.
