@maffewh1 That's a stupid reason. The reason you couldn't be selective is because you'd have to reload the film, not to mention buy more, now there's no reason for that. That was a limitation of old photography, and this photogunning method is actually useful. Just because you didn't have it back in the days doesn't mean it's bad, it's actually good. Oh and for the record, you can learn how the camera functions and adjust everything fine with digital cameras, despite losing a few things.
@maffewh1 With a 1200mm lens it would take a 1 mph wind to make your photos blurry. Even if it is a slight blur. Shooting "machine gunner," as you say, style is useful to make sure you have at least 1 good shot.
To give you an idea the "average user" can't take a 400mm lens and shoot slower then 1/160. Now go to 1200 and it gets much worse.
well i guess its only 1Ds series so its not that fast.
dont forget that those fast cameras are made for sports photographers who NEED that fast cameras to not miss THE moment when a football player gets tackled.
but i understand your concern, when a friend and i go out for a shooting. i bring my 5D II and he brings his analog Contax MF camera. you can see the different, i make like 50-100shots every time. and he does like 4-5shots
i simply delete the shots i dislike and shoot again.
Does anyone know if they sold this already?? I'm thinking about buying it... I just need something cheap for right now, school projects and side jobs, you know, nothing too drastic.
Now, if we are thinking in APS-C size Canon DSLR, this will equal to 38.4x zoom since entry and mid-level Canon DSLR have so called magnification ratio of 1.6x compared to full frame DSLRs. But if you look at it, cropping an image is not really equivalent to magnification. You're simply narrowing the viewing angle. All in all, I'd say that this lens is about 28x zoom, becasue it's a lens covring 24/36mm frame, and in that format, the focal lenght corresponding to human eye is about 43mm
It depens how you look at it. 50mm focal length is usually considered a normal lens on a 35mm film camera (or a full-frame DSLR with 24/36mm sensor). Normal focal length means, that it is approxiamately zero magnification, which is the way humay eye sees things. (A human eye supposedly has 43mm focal lenght). So 50mm is close to human eye focal length. In that case 1200mm will be 24x zoom, becasue 1200 divided by 50 is 24.
I was reading an article in a photography magazine about a guy who laughed hard at another guy who bought this lens. However, the lens paid for itself after only three shooting assignments. I think once you're a pro photographer of highest calliber, this lens would actually pay you a lot of money, instead of you paying for the lens. But there are only few photographers in the world who get that kind of photographic assignments. So, the first guy stopped laughing after he heard that.
This thing cost $200K back in 1984 when it was new, and it was shipped back to Canon to be refitted at their own expense- there were only three original lenses made.
I mean Dang..Id have Nasa Make me a Mockup Hubble Telescope with that Money then..shoot!!!!And make it Mountable with all the makes and models of digital SLRs, SLR,s and Micro 4/3's lol...I mean thats if i had that kinda money...

It depends on the camera you are using. He has a full-frame 5d from the looks of it, so that makes it 34x.
On a subframe camera like a 450d, it's 54x.
