as a young irish man it annoys me that Phil and Rory gallagher arent alive alive imagine these guys playing in oxegen instead of the mediocre "rock" we are stuck with :(
Phil, I never thought you'd go till you did, believe me. I met the man once, in JC's (John Conteh) restaurant in London in about 1982. We were peeing at adjacent urinals. When we had both finished, I extended my hand to shake his and he accepted. Then, we had this awkward realization that we probably both had urine on our hands! I saw The Lizz in concert twice, once at the Hammersmith Odeon, once at Wembley Arena, both in the Lynott/Downey/Robertson/Gorham configuration, and they blew me away.
i wonder how difficult it is (if it is even possible) to write a song like this that so many people would just instantly love and couldnt stop listening to? Im thinkin forget that thought and stick with lizzy XD hah! think about it, the bands, groups or whatever we have today just cannot and will not ever make musical fucking art that will ever live up to thin lizzy ( or any other of the greats for that matter), bless them they try tho.........................PMSL!!!!!
why the hell would anybody in their right mind want to go to a thin lizzy concert without phil lynott fronting the band? to me it would just cheapen the memory. RIP phil.
@MickeyLynott brian robertson refused tovplay it :P he didnt do any of the gitar work on the track thats all scott and phill wouldnt let scott do keyboards#
This song is amazing! This entire album is top ten all time. From cover to cover, each song carries to the next perfectly. No mediocre songs at all- on this- thier best album.
i think that phil was a little too pop for robbo's taste. in the end, it's what made lizzy so interesting. i wish phil would have collaborated with van the man. that would have been incredible. phil could have worked with so many more artists, the versatility.
One of Lizzy's best songs ,showing a Van Morrison influence.Scott plays all the guitar on this song as Robbo didn't want to have anything to do with it !He originally wanted to play the keyboards but was unhappy when Phil drafted in a session guy .Robbo has described this song as "poxy" ! Scott's solo is typically tasty and joyous in my opinion.
Thin Lizzy are the ONLY band that can get me to actually like a song that features lyrics about being hopelessly in love with a girl! (99% of the time I say fuck that shit!)
At the time i didn't know it but this is one of the best albums put out by one of the best bands ever!!! I was lucky enough to see them in 78? at tThe Warfield Theatre in S.F.
Hi all, just wanted to post this, Gary Moore is a bit of a twat, but he is by far the best lead guitar player Lizzy ever had, if you dont believe me just check him out playin Black Rose at the point Dublin, dont get me wrong i love em all, well maybe not Snowy ( he was a bit boring),
@MrTinlizzy Well it all comes down to a matter of taste or opinion. You cannot say one or the other is the best, only who you think is the best ofcourse. Lots of others have different opinions and taste, and thank god we are entitled to to think otherwise... ;-)
jailbreak is the classic lizzy album... If you really enjoy them check out the song "sha la la" on the album "live and dangerous"... their best album by far
Saw Thin Lizzy at the Old Cleveland Stadium in 1979. World Series of Rock featuring The Scorpions, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Journey, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. GOOD TIMES GOOD TIMES !
@BigAlzer@loafbo@NotInTheCojones It's a shame that the vocalist of the band died on the year that I was born. Would've been great to watch a live performance of this.
I've known about ThinLizzy since I was either 11 or 12, because my dad kept playing it.
I agree with the oldster's, because I am obe. Iv'e been playin' over 40 yrs., and these are some of the sweetest, well timed duals ever laid down as solos. Not to mention Downey and Lynott.
@thinfloyd I think you mean the song "Ode to Liberty", that is with Mark Knopfler and had the sentence:
"This is a statement. Made by one who can not practice what he preaches" in it. This is Thin Lizzy, without Mark Knopfler. On the album Jailbreak there were: Phil Lynott - bass guitar, lead vocals, acoustic guitar Scott Gorham - lead guitar, guitars, Brian Robertson - lead guitar, guitars and Brian Downey - drums, percussion * Tim Hinkley - keyboards on "Running Back" (uncredited)
This is the greatest rock band ever and in my opinion the started heavy metal with their music and still they made som eof the best melodic music I have ever heard since then, just magic to my ears. Not to mention that they where the first ones with twin guitars. Excellent
I'm starting up a Lizzy tribute band just south of Boston....Anyone interested let me know jtnolan@comcast.net Give me a month or so to get goin' !! Thanks!
Friday night standing in the darkness, eyes straining towards the stage. A rumble of bass, and Phils unforgetable voice " are you ready". A thunderous power chord and flash pots go off launching us into the light...
Phils wearing a gold silk shirt, leather pants, and white moccasions, playing a cherry red bass with a mirrored scratch plate.. throwing the light back into our faces shaking his fist, while the boys trade solos to downeys solid beat, the crowd is going crazy. Awesome days.
I agree. I started listening to Lizzy shortly after hearing Metallica's Whiskey In The Jar, and I'm glad I looked the history of that one up. It's been a few years ago. I don't listen to Metallica as much anymore, but I'm still hearing new Thin Lizzie songs I love all the time. Their music is amazing, and there's a little something for everybody, from softer tunes like this one and Here I Go Again to rockers like Emerald, Jailbreak, etc. And don't forget Cowboy Song!
I saw Thin Lizzy at Seneca College in Toronto in Feb or March?,1977. Graham Parker and the Rumour opened the show. Thin Lizzy were unbelievable, Brian Robertson was playing a black Les Paul with white binding and he was as good as ANY of the hot guitarists of the 70's he was just beyond belief. wish they had video camera's back then .... sigh
I'd just like to say this song gave me back my faith in what songs are all about.Lyrics lyrics lyrics.I haven't heard it in a good number of years and nearly forgot about it until I saw it in the bread ad so nice one for getting it OUT THERE
There's a strong argument to support the suggestion that Jailbreak could be the best melodic rock album every recorded - perfect throughout. That Live and Dangerous is the best live album of all time - ther is no doubt. In a word - Awesome!
@ronanccurran hands down my all around favorite one. Very musical, catchy inflections throughout the whole thing. Jailbreak in my top 10 all time easily.
Fun Fact: Robbo doesn't play guitar on this one. Robbo wanted to play this as a slower, bluesy number including some slide guitar but Phil wanted this more pop sounding version, so Robbo refused to play on it!! I believe Robbo's upcoming solo album will have the slower version on it.
My band and i played this song a week ago in front of 34 people in a louzy bar in Holland, and some people, believe me or not, thought this juwel was a song of our own (we wish ;-)...what a shame Philip...that there are people who have forgotten your music......R.I.P. my man...
excellent comment. What a great tribute, to do this song out of any, I've loved this song from the very first time I heard it, you can hear the pain, it's just great. I give you props, my friend, thanks for continuing to turn people on with this great tune! Peace
To all you young guys, you have just started a journey of discovery.
TL are the greatest rock band that there has ever been. Dig deeper there is more to experience. Fifty one years on Lizzy are still my fave, and i was fortunate to catch them live 79,80,81,83.
Congratulate yourselves for your taste in the greatest rock music ever. Its good to hear a new generation listening to quality.

I'm 17 now and I've been enjoying these sublime classics for over a year, it's the best kind of music in my opinion!
