I've never seen someone hold a brush like that before! In fact, I noticed that before realizing you were drawing with your left hand. :P I never really thought about using a brush for inking comics and other illustrations before, which is odd, considering the fact that I enjoy, amongst others, Octopus Pie and Gaston Lagaffe. It looks a lot more fun than filling whole areas with a lousy ballpoint pen.!
It's amazing how any problem can be fixed by using white ink. Botched lines, flat silhouettes, over-due bills, crappy relationships...or...w...wait...
And I was wondering if 'octopus pie' would give me any results on youtube...

Thanks for the tutorial, Mer. I feel a greater sense of camaraderie in seeing such a talented lefty. I've learned over the years that we southpaws should best draw right to left.
I think I need to take art classes myself. I can draw, but I think I need to learn some discipline and the same professional-grade techniques that you exemplify.
Seeing how much work goes into every panel is kind of stunning. Even at three times a week, that's a lot of drawing. Do you usually do it all in one sitting?
And how is it always so good??? I need to spend some money in your store.
I'm not, but I get asked pretty often and I take that as a good sign. :)
I don't specifically try to write Asian American characters, just realistic people. Sometimes I do research or ask friends; usually the characters write themselves.
That was really quite something. Awesome song choices, great style and it's nice to see another left-handed person creating some fantastic stuff. Been reading your comic since day one and it's one of my regular reads. Thank you for the laughs :)
So talented! What would you say to someone who just watched this video and is now afraid to draw anything ever again because of their newfound knowledge that there are very good artists in the world?

Depends on the comic, sometimes I get it all done at once, sometimes I take a break and do other things or draw it over the course of 2 days.

Good Jesus! Just another leftie to prove my theory about leftys - they're all way too talented:D
Seriously, I'm not saying that righties can't draw, but that at least every leftie I know is very-very talented .

HAY what is that crazy song playing while you ink?
zomb1eez 3 years ago
Remarkably, my favorite part that you could see the ink dry in the bigger blocks of black at this speed. :)
Given the way you hold your brush, I'm surprised you start with the top row and go down. Don't get end up with smudges? Or is the ink that fast?
Speaking of fast, how long did this take?
Good stuff!

Yes, I enjoy seeing the ink dry as well. heh.
I don't always start with the top row. Sometimes I jump around. The ink does dry very quickly, almost immediately if it's not a big fill area.

jesus, did you draw those straight lines without a ruler?
nice!
I love your work. these videos are so fun! makes me want to start doodling.
your work is really nice and clean! =) Keep at it.

I stenciled them with a ruler, then traced them freehand. I like the slight imperfection it gives them. :)
Thanks!

totally awesome. i gotta try brush-inking again. normally i'd do everything with microns. the brush gives it a more 'artsy' feel. keep it up!
