Its a culmination of Anglo-Saxon and Viking art. Celtic art is swirl based, like the Newgrange symbol. For some reason (probably because the Irish liked it) the Celts copied Knot-work art and claimed it as thier own. The so-called 'Celtic Cross', even comes from the Heathen symbol of Odin.
