This may be one of the greatest teams ever to not win an NBA Championship. The 1995-96 Sonics went 64-18, SWEPT the Defending Champs Houston Rockets (with Hakeem who may have been the best player on the planet at that time), won over an equally great Utah Jazz team---I mean that is an awesome season. They ran into a team that was 72-10 and was on a mission to get the Larry O'Brien Trophy back into Chicago.
@kklol7. Kevin Durant may not have cracked the starting lineup for the 1996 Sonics. Yes I know he is a scoring machine but the NBA Defenses in the 90s would not allow Durant to score like he does now. 2---Durant's Defense is very poor, I'll take McMillian, Hawkins, Schremp on Defense any day. 3---Durant is not physical at all, he would be pushed around.
@JZ2001JC You must be joking. No fan of Durant but to say that he wouldnt be in the starting 5 instead of Schrempf or Hawkins is either pure stupidity or you're just a superbiased soncis fan.
Thanks for the vid. Basketball was exciting back in those days. My Sonics should of had a championship back in the 90's. Kemp was a beast. MJ got all the bs calls.
oh, please, Jordan did not play that well that series. The refs won that series for them. The Sonics were the hungrier, younger team, and if they had a star that compared to Jordan on their team, they'd have gotten more calls.
man I remember when teams were SCARED to come play in Seattle. not just because of Payton/Kemp either, Key Arena was one of the rowdiest places to go play basketball in the league. I wish I had a time machine, and culd just go back and watch the nineties sonics, and maybe kick Clay Bennet square int he nuts.
I live in Portland, but was a sonics fan since early 90's. I remember driving up to Seattle during this series just to feel the vibe of the town...It was awesome. I just went to my first game at Key arena this year.
Well I just cried. A combination of watching Payton and Kemp, our crowd coming together like that (the real 6th man ala the Seahawk's 12th man, if you will), reading a bunch of nostalgic and hopefull (if not angry, enraged, and depressing) emails and letters from Sonic's fans, and maybe most of all Ladd's story, and I just lost it; tears actually ran down my face....and I don't feel a bit ashamed.
I remember watching this series and rooting steadfastly for the Sonic even though everyone knew Jordan and the Bulls were unbeatable. Bill Gates needs to get his rear in gear, pay off the Commish, and make Bennett get his own team for OKC. Or make him go buy the Grizzlies. Not the Sonics.
It's an affront to sports fans everywhere and much bigger deal than all the BS around Clemens. Let's have Congressional hearings about this. Prove Congress isn't in the billionaire's pockets.
As a Knicks fan on hiatus (not a fair weather fan, just hate being run by a couple of a**holes), I was a HUGE Sonics fan back in 96 (I still hate the Chicago Bullsh!ts), and I realized from watching this series how passionate Sonics fans are, and to this day, whenever I see the team on TV, the place looks full, and the passion is there...don't take the team from Seattle, send the Nets to OKC or something (just joking...)
I lost my sister in 1993, and when I read Ladd's post I thought of my sister. Me and my sister's bond was Nintendo's Super Mario Bros 3. What Bennett and his jackass crew are doing to the Sonics would be like someone coming to my house and stealing my Mario Bros 3. At what point do owners take a look in the mirror and ask themselves, "What the hell am I doing"? For David Stern to allow this is downright disgusting. To all the Seattle fans from a Bulls fan SAVE THE SONICS!!!!!!!!!!!
I made an audible noise of sadness at work with emotions building up from both mailbags, coming to Ladd's post. Seattle, make your stand. Save the Sonics.
I'm not a Sonics fan, but somebody needs to step up and save this team before Ladd's only memory of his sister is a youtube video. Nobody deserves that.
Shawn Kemp was a beast for real..... if Seattle didnt trade him he wouldve never collapsed his career away and would have been a possible hall of famer.
And as for GP, he was the best Pointguard in the NBA that year. And is a DEFINITE hall of famer, one of the all-time greats without a doubt.
Seattle would have won if McMillan was playing. He would have guarded Jordan instead of Payton. Payton was always tired in the fourth plus we had to play dang Vincent Askew way too much.
I remember this series almost like it was yesterday. After they won game 5 people were goin crazy in the streets. Seattle wounldnt be Seattle without the Sonics
This was an entertaining series. The Kemp dunk on Rodman's head was one of the most memorable dunks ever. Too bad it is not in this mix, but great job.
Thankyou Ladd for sharing this memory with us. As someone who has family members with CF I know I will have to go through what you went through one day. Keep on Keepin' on. Sonics Forever.
Ladd this is a great memory cherish it forever and this knicks fan will rooting for your Sonics this year and for them to stay in seattle where they belong

the kemp block on mj at 2:24 was sick. mj was hanging for like, ever, like he always did anyway, but damn, kemp too!! thanks for the memories, sonics. we'll miss you.
Ladd, thanks for the email. What a great story, I'm almost in tears right now. That sign says it all for everyone in Seattle. -Pistons fan cheering for the Sonics this year.
che spettacolo! I remember waking up in the middle of the night to watch those finals on Tv, it was a big show. I still love kemp and payton! Seattle rules! Grunge rules!
The Bulls that year were Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, and a bunch of stiffs. They had to have the worst bench of any title winner in the last 25-30 years. Jordan was the difference unfortunately.
I wish there was a place to download this video. I was 11 years old at this time and Gary Payton had been my favorite player since I can remember. I hated Jordan (mainly because EVERYONE was a frontrunner for him). Jordan had a LOT of trouble. Probably the most ever in his career in that series.
Screw the Bulls. Next time this series is featured on ESPN CL watch Payton D up Jordan and hold him to low scoring every game. hahahaha
well I was 4 at the time. we didn't realy get robed to much. what I should of said was
we were a realy good team and if there was a chance of us winning a title it should have been then. even though the bulls were having a "Record setting season"
but you watched the video. You saw gary pissing off jordan while drawing a foul
and kemp powering through and dunking the ball. plus schrempf was hella good at scoring 3s
Gary Payton was the best I was sad when he got traded
Yeah I get what you're saying. Yeah I was only 5 at the time. Go to the game Friday vs Nets. its on ESPN and there is going to be a Save our sonics rally at the fountain @ seattle center right by key arena. also the crowd will be chanting
IF ONLY KEMP AND PAYTON COULD HAVE GOT PAST THE FIRST ROUND WHEN JORDAN WAS OUT FOR 2 YEARS THEY WOULD HAVE BEAT THE ROCKETS I MEAN THEY BEAT THEM IN 1993 as well as 1996 when they got the chance! DAMN THOSE KINGS AND LAKERS
I miss shawn kemp's reverse dunk on dennis rodman, when he spinned around him and sat on his shoulders for a second. That was one of his best moves ever!
having been a trail blazers fan all my life and losing in 92, i HATED chicago. i rooted for the suns then the sonics to take the bulls down...its a shame
ah such good memories right there...any other year that sonics team would have won it all, they were deeper than most people remember and how sick was shawn kemp in his prime?
God damn.. Brings me back. We deserved a title so bad in the 90's. Hard to even belive we only made the dance once. GO SONICS! (Or should i say STAY SONICS?)
