I played this first in it's original release for the BBC Model B. I had to have it for the Spectrum and it has been my yardstick for every Space sim since then. The only game that comes close is X3:TC
so I should buy this coz he said so? haha.. I thought it was nice, but not in my top 10. I used to like buggy blast by firebird more instead =).. pity the old developers aren't around any more and everything has 58749853453 people working on one game.. when back then it was 1-5 people at most.
That brings me some memories, when i get out running from school only to get to my Spectrum and play Elite for hours, yet i managed to do the rescue mission and getting the cloacking device from that 'stealth' ASP then my hobby was getting Thargoid ships in the witchspace...today games are very nice, but when we get to those days, the games were not so beautifull, but the gameplay was...
loved this game ,played in on specky amd 64 just mint! never became elite but i was deadly,my ship had all the extras, ecm system 4 way militaty lazers, extra energy bank, thargoid invasion no probs bring em on!
When I was at school, it seemed like everyone who liked computers played this and after seeing it on the BBC I couldn't imagine it getting onto the Spectrum.. When it came out it was pretty good. I'll never forget Lenslok!
The temptation is there to laugh at an old quaint commercial of an aged game...but Elite really was a spectacular game, both in it's time and for a decade afterwards. 3d wire graphics, several star systems to explore, randomised challenges/market values and incredibly challenging encounters.
The voiceover sounds like something off a Mitchell and Webb sketch!

i could never dock the thing!

@loontheklown1. The secret we found to docking was aim towards the docking bay at a slight distance, then give it full power without rotating.

Exactly. Docking at a Coriolis Space Station at that angle is just asking for "fwip fwip fwip fwip" Game Over.

These Firebird commercials weren't TV spots, surely? I'm guessing they were made for the computer shows.
