  • look at them now!

  • be nice if u new the first thing about audio , like making the volume loud enough to hear!?

  • You are simply a meanie Lol Name a better camera out, go ahead?

  • bunkofurko, you really seem like the kind of person I used to dislike in The National Honor Society... I would walk in the room to a meeting and hear some "know-it-all" spouting off about how a photon has mass at relativistic speeds, well I had to break it to him that there was a third derivative called a "Jerk" (Like you) that explained how a photon simply does not have mass at the speed of light... Just saying, I don't really like you very much ;-)

  • I am currently editing a film that was shot on a RED Camera. And I must say, it is astounding how high the quality is. It looks just like film, and even surpasses it in some aspects. The shutter speed is perfect, and the colors are outstanding.

  • Last 8 episodes of "ER" were shot with RED ONE and "Southland" will be shot with the RED camera. "Leverage" is currently shot with RED ONE. A number of film were shot entirely with the RED camera, including "Knowing"

  • and che was shot on red.

    fuck yeah!

  • this might be a noob question but is 2k and 4k like beyond HD

  • 1K is 1080P, 2K is twice that, and 4K is twice that of 2K. So, yeah, the idea is that because current home theater capabilities are still limited to 1080P, When you shoot in 4x that of 1080P, it is downsized resulting even higher definition than normal... There is currently an experimental 6K camera being developed, Wikipedia has plenty of information about it. 6K is being deemed "Super Hi-Vision (SHV)".

  • alright thanks ill look it up

  • Will digital look like film any time soon?

e.g. will the 6k cameras be closer to film-quality, in terms of colours etc ?

  • Yes.

When latitude and rgb spectrum sensitivity is the same, it will look the same, sans grain.

Of course, you can "mimic" a film look today in post processing.

Look at movies like The French Connection or The Godfather for example. Shot on grainy 70's film and it doesn't look nearly as detailed as movies shot on 35mm Vision2 stock today, but they still look awesome. The DP is the key, not the tools.

Digital has come a long way and is an awesome medium. But it's not film. It's different.

  • Thanks for the answer. Really interesting and potentially helpful to me.

I still don't think digital looks as good as film though, do you agree temsi?

Also, I think the majority audience says they prefer film to digital: With one of the latest Scary Movie films, the audience complained about some good quality images and some bad quality. Scary Movie ( I think part 4) used some film and some digital.

So I think they were complaining about the digital being bad quality?

  • That's too subjective a question to answer.

I've seen film look worse than video and I've seen video look better than film. It's just the DP.

Film is wonderful - but digital is here to stay.

I just hope no more movies are made to look like Public Enemies. It's awful.

Digital isn't a total replacement for film, nothing is.

    It's a different process entirely.

You light and shoot it differently.

The end product CAN look the same, but should it?

    I think it's a choice, one I'm glad I have.

  • temsi -- what's your personal subjective opinion? That's what I meant to ask.

The best film looks better than the best video I've seen in my subjective opinion.

I'm renting Public Enemies when it comes out here. Haven't seen it.

Do you think the end product can look the same? Compared to the best film? I don't think so. Not yet. My opinion could change however.

  • My subjective opinion, is that digital still does not look "as good as" film. But that's my point. Digital still looks freakin' awesome when it's done right (most of Che looks stunning - and like film). But is it because we've been conditioned to think that's what a "good" film should look or is it because it's a beautiful frame?

Digital is still so young that it can't compete with film in that regard - there are so many choices of film. Also, DPs are still discovering how to use digital...

  • Also: Parts of Che did look good. I was more impressed with RED than I'd ever been, however I still don't think digital is as good as film **yet**.

  • Che was shot on two of the first RED cameras, using very early builds of their firmware and software.

Today they're on a new build (build 20) that completely re-invents the camera. They rewrote the color science (which includes the debayering) which eliminated most of the noise in the blue channel, and has dramatically altered what that camera is capable of doing. The best part is that the new science can be applied to older footage as well, and make it look even better than before.

  • Read..

  • (cont'd)

Most of the best ones have spent decades working in film and film is their medium. Does that mean digital won't have its Connie Hall or Janusz Kaminski? Of course not. I'm sure someone out there right now will utilize RED (which IMHO is the best digital camera you can get) to a point where it becomes the look to beat.

I believe in the digital acquisition model - it makes post processing more flexible. So if RED can bridge the gap between Vision2 and a sensor, more power to them.

  • It's interesting that we agree on film vs digital. Though your technical talk is way above my head. I'm not a DP amateur or professional. Just a fan and I study film sometimes.

  • Wrong.

    Flat out wrong.

In digital cinema, K refers to the pixels of width.

1080p refers to the pixels in height.

1080p is actually 1920x1080, and therefore it's _almost_ 2k, but not quite.

    2k is ~2000 pixels wide.

    4k is ~4000 pixels wide.

Pixels of height, is determined by the aspect ratio of the image, within the confines of the sensor's maximum vertical resolution.

  • It is interesting to watch this old video and hear the specs mentioned (the slide in drives for example) and seeing the renders/prototypes and comparing that to the final RedOne. I see the little LCD got the chop.

  • red scarlet... time to seperate the men from the boys

  • amazing camera with one major problem: OVERHEATING :( hopefully this issue will be solved in newer models, but all in all, the best camera out there.

  • designed to be used and handled!

  • you have to be a millionaire in able to buy this insane camera without hesitation. Or just a regular joe who really wants this camera badly, who will work overtime, sell some drugs and any kind of mischief and then buy this one in a contempt satisfaction.

  • The RED Camera doesn't cost a lot only £17,000

  • thankyou!

  • wait for the red scarlet, gives you 3k and is supposed to be under 3 grand. it will change everything about film.

  • Sweet how did you hear about the product?

  • popular science had an ad at one point, and i have been following their camera news ever since. Unfortunelty a change in plans has changed the camera and it has jumped out of my price range, but one day i will own one ; )

  • Ya I heard about the change in plans but from what I can SEE it looks like RED is appealing to people like me. Im seriously thinking of buying this product once its out.

  • When is Red Scarlet's release date?

  • targeted for fall 2009, but they change all the time

  • Thanks magnifyingpictures. Do you know if the overheating problem was eliminated as had happened with it's older siblings?

  • no idea, they only just announced the new specs on the 15th of nov, i havnt even seen any test footage or real pics of it, only renders. but im sure it will be worth every penny, as soon as i can afford it im getting one.

  • That's amazing... It's bloody high tech, totally upgradeable/adaptable, state of the art and BEAUTIFUL! In my opinion, digital may never overtake ULF (Ultra Large Format) still photography for resolution, DoF and colour saturation, but cameras like this and others like the Arriflex D-20, etc. spell the end of film in the movie industry.

  • It's ugly.

  • i shot on this puppy today. i gotta say, it is pretty awesome. Times...they are a changing!

  • I use mine to spy on the dog when it tries to snag a skooby-snack from the catbox. This RAD baby ports out via a super-accelerated octi-chipped wi-fi to a state-of-the-art super-duper UltraHi-Def 6880p 128" flat screen gold-coated 150 degree Celsius Magma-Plasma with super-custom Lucas THX surround-sound (whatever that meant)! 17K? More like 100K! There's a sucker (read tech-geek) born every minute!

  • 17,000 only gets you the camera, no lenses, nothing. When you pile on your lenses, and filters, and that 'bad ass cinematography tool' you're up to the 100K level. Then, you need all your other stuff, monitors, batteries, etc. When that's all said and done, you need a tripod that can handle a 50 LB rig, because when it's all assembled, it weighs over 45 LBS. how bout a Steadicam, and a dolly, and you need a bombing 1st AC, because your depth of field at F5.8 is in the millimeters, good luck AC.
