  • For calcium use crumbeled up egg shells.ny grandmother used to have a huge water bin in our garden. In it thousand of egg shells, tea bags, and a german weed that burns when you fall in.let the mixture sit for a while then water with it.

  • @AngelikavonDeutschla Thank you! Sounds like a great idea!

  • If you wanna kill them organically. Deep dish filled up with beer.als a bottle mixture of dish soap, water, vinegar.mix it in and spray the leaves.i m late with our cucumbers this year,we had just a wet spring.i m enjoying your videos.where about in he usa?

  • You can still eat the cucumber and any other veggie that is bad. Just cut off the bad part. It won't hurt you.

  • I know I'm a year late but: Donna, tomato blossoms will drop off above about 90-92 degrees. If you are in FL, you need to start everything a little earlier to beat the heat! When daytime temps drop below 90, your tomato blossoms will produce again.

You can pick your tomatoes before they are fully ripe and ripen them indoors on the COUNTER (NOT windowsill--the fruits don't need sunlight. Ripening indoors prevents birds getting them as well as prevents cracking from storms.

  • @matermark Thank you!! great tips!

  • I am surprised that you have not used companion planting to protect your vegetables, especially after all the hard work of establishing such a large square foot gardening area! For cucumbers, nasturtium and marigolds work great.

  • @lgcamp One year later...I am checking this video!! HA I am totally into companion planting now. check out my latest video. thank so much for the tip!!

  • I think you may be having a cucumber beetle problem. They bore holes in the cucumbers and spread wilt disease. I am surprised that you have gone through so much trouble to build such a large square foot gardening area without using the companion planting method. For cucumbers, nasturtium and marigolds would protect your cucumbers. Try companion planting next year. It works great for me every year!

  • HOLY WOW on the watermelon!

  • if you want some good organic insecticide ,i have had alot of luck with this, it is called Diatomaceous Earth, check it out if your interested ,i wish you luck on ur endevor.nice garden

  • I'm trying to find what eats pickle worms so you can introduce them. Deffinately release lady bugs.

  • Thanks for the Sevin tip! I need it! Something is eating my peppers all up! It is making me mad!!

  • The name of the product is "Sevin" (not "Seven") and is made by GardenTech.

  • i hate those tomato catapillars, they are nocturnal and if u go out there at night with a flashlight u will catch them working away on ur tomatoes. I saw on a video that if u spray your gardent with hot pepper sauce and a little soap the bugs wont eat your plants. Im gonna try it with my SFG.

  • How do use the powdered milk? Do you sprinkle it in the dirt then water it in? Or do you mix it up like you would drink it and then water the plants with that? I have never heard of this, but i'll give it a try. Also Do you know how to get rid of Southern Armyworm? They are going after my tomatos and soon my bell peppers and egplant. I keep taking the eggs off the leaves. Florida has horrible with garden pests.

    Thanks...;)

  • Harvest your watermelon 10 days after the tendril, the one closest to where the melon is attached to the vine, is dry and shriveled. Also the rind should turn dull and be resistant to you fingernail.

  • Thank you so much! Just the info I need! I'll give it another try this season.

  • idk if your trying them again this year but i had that same problem get seven ill get you a picture link and trust me you will have a lot of cucumbers i love them and got o 20 out of two plants great stuff heres the link

it wont let me put the link on but if you go to lowes website and search seven trust me they will be gone

    great stuff

  • Seven is another cause to issues we are having with honey bees. Use a garlic / pepper tea on them or plant radishes with the cucumbers to deter the beetles.

  • Thanks so much! I am always looking for natural alternatives.

  • Try a cuke called county fair hybrid it's pretty bug and disease resistant.

  • To handle the pickleworm :

Open the infested stem by making a slit and remove the borer. If the stem is not too far damaged, heap soil over the damaged area to encourage rooting.

  • Donna,

Hang in there. Apparently the moths home in Florida in the summer and can be a real problem. I have an Orlando SFG and found the same worms eating my cucumber leaves. Fortunately my plants climb a 6" trestle which made it easier for me to spot their droppings. I picked them one by one for 3 days, finally eliminating them. I also thinned out the leaves so I could see the bugs better. Now I know what to look for. The plant is now thriving with cukes.

  • It's nice to see a garden update again. I've read that leaf curl and bloosom drop on tomatoes is caused by high heat and there's not much that can be done about it here in Florida. They sell a product called Bt at feed and farm stores that kills caterpillars. It's a Bascillus bacteria so its natural. I also recommend you look at the site gardensalive dot c o m. They have lots of nice products there.

  • Thank you so much. The blossom drop makes sense, there is such a fluctuation in temps where I live. I will get some Bt...thanks!

  • use seven its a white power in a pringle like can adn just sprinkile it on it it works gud

  • what kind of soil are you using? my garden is doing well, though i am just digging in the oklahoma red clay and have success with some and squash and zucchini are not so hot this year. wanting to build planter boxes like you have, just dont want to have lower my backyard by a foot or so to get all the dirt i need...looking good though, enjoying watching your videos.

  • The book "Square Foot Gardening" is the resource I used to make my garden. The soil is a very specific mix of compost, vermeculite, and peat moss. It helps the plants thrive by adding nutrients and proper drainage. I highly reccommend the book.

  • BT (Bacillus thuringiensis)Organic apply every 5 to 7 days when fruits are a couple of inches long. This should help control the pickle worm.

  • Thank you...I am going to try it.

  • darn...pickleworm is bad, I checked my organic handbook and it reccomends planting a trap crop of summer squash. mabey you can leave a squash laying by the plant and they will go to it instead. it also says to destroy the plant after harvest they can have up to 5 generations per year. I'm sure a powder like DE would kill them also.

  • Thank you. I will try some things when I return next week.

  • Hi Donna,long time on see !!
