@bigpoppaike6 It depends on the situation. Overall, I'd say yes. The .338 Lapua Magnum has great stopping power and excellent accuracy and range, and can serve as both an anti-personnel and anti-materiel round. However, the .50 BMG still tops it in anti-materiel capability and range (possibly accuracy). Another excellent round is the .408, having better accuracy and range than the .50 BMG, making it perfect for the longest of ranges; it is used in the Cheytac M-200.
@Mindwerkz Isn't the .338 Lapua a better choice than the .50 BMG? that round is literally just intened for anti-material and machine gun usage instead of anti-personnel.
@skari121 In a sense, yes. The .338 Lapua Magnum is like the best of everything in a long range rifle round. It packs a massive punch, much more than a 7.62x51 NATO, has much more range than the 7.62 (and accuracy at range), and acts like the BMG in the sense of the power it has when it hits; it is more effective at engaging personnel than a 7.62 and can still be used for anti-materiel as the .50 is, but has a smaller size than the .50. It's like a BMG, but with the size of a 7.62.
@Mindwerkz They went for the standard M98B, not the MRAD. The in-game weapon has the matte-black color, full length (something like a 27" if I'm not mistaken) barrel, and the skeleton stock. They did mess up one thing about the 98, though, that being the magazine capacity; 5 rounds instead of the actual 10 .338 Lapua Magnum, I suppose for balance in the game.
I have problem with m98b. My fireing pin hiting the primer but 40% of the shoots is missfire. Factory ammo. Sierra king 250 g, Horrnady 285g and Serbian 250g. I got 120 shots thru this rifle so far and over 30 was miss fire. I can see "dent" in the primer but maybe straiking pin do not hit primer strong. (it's new rifle just 120 shoots).
@vxAREKxv Does the round discharge if you run it through a second time? Have you or anyone else done any work on the firing pin or anything? Even Barrett is capable of having a defect. Have you contacted the factory? They would be happy to fix it for you I'm sure.
@Mindwerkz Yes I try to put same round two three times in to the chamber and nothing. I bring this rifle to my trusty gun store. They call barrett directly and barrett told them: do not tuch any think, just send it to as. That's was 2 weeks ago, I'm waiting now.
What is inside of that room that you shot in amde of? I imagine if it was metal there would be a high chance for ricochet and... Im jealous of you job :/
@malaista I believe it was reinforced concrete covered in places with soundproofing. The chamber being shot into was just concrete if I remember correctly. It had an enormous pile of shredded steel belted tires behind the targets. There were also divots along one wall where apparently a visiting group of special forces soldiers demonstrated that you can indeed skip a bullet along a wall like a rock along water. -D
@Manicwensday1 I'm sure it IS fun, but I'd say 'better' is subjective in this case. The M98 would be much better at taking down dangerous game on the safari, blowing out the chest of a hostage taker from half a mile away, disabling a truck or detonating a roadside bomb in a controlled manner. The water pistol is likely much better at shooting your friends without killing them though. =)
@elvishboyman it should, look at the bullet size compared to... say a Barrett 50 cal, its only 7/10 the thickness of the bullet so it shouldnt be too much off target because of wind comapred to the 50 cal
I thought a SAKO TRG 42 and a L96 AWSM shot smooth untill I shot one of those. The Barrett 98B's bolt is real nice and smooth, but the guy that had it thought he could shave another pound of the trigger pull and fucked it up and made it sloppy as shit. My philosohpy on that is if it works dont fix it.......
@lurch6stringsdown =( that's a sad story. Dude spent $5k on the gun but couldn't spend $100 to have a gunsmith or the factory armorers do a little professional polishing or maybe toss on some teflon? That right there is the definition of goonsmithing. I bet he used a dremel or a file on it am I right?
@Mindwerkz Used a diamond chainsaw file on it like a fuckard. I tried to get him just to use bolt lapping solution on it that what I used on my AR's to smooth them out.
@Mindwerkz No, I cannot imagine the awesome power of that rifle, but wouldn't that conversion kit make their experimental XM109 obsolete? I mean, why buy an entirely new "Payload" rifle if you can simply convert your old one?
@djpx49 If you want a semi-auto .338LM you could get a modern Browning BAR. Also, I was told that Barrett had a semi-auto bullpup in prototype when the wars broke out, but they had to put it on the back burner to concentrate on current military orders and such.
Dude, seriously, the BAR? They might have one chambered in .338 Federal. All that is is a necked up .308. They don't make anything in .338LM. You have no fucking clue what you're talking about man.
uuugghh, shutup and let him concentrate! btw, the rounds werent loaded correctly, and the rear leg on the butt of the rifle should be down and he should lay as close to the floor as possible... and what the hell is that whining sound?!? bloody hell, what type of factory is this!?!? ah... well at least he didnt reload quickly, he followed through... only thing he did right, and wheres the ear defenders?!?
@Micbo2k10 lol. I wasn't bothered with the talking. how do you figure the rounds were improperly loaded? The rear leg was right where I wanted it. The whining sound is the ventilation system. It's the most awesome factory I've ever seen. The hearing protection is in my ears.
@Mindwerkz ok, i was picky, sorry bout that, I looked closely, and the mag has a different slot, my mistake, the L98GP A2, which I use in cadets, has a piece of metal at the top, so we have to slide the rounds, then click them in. I suppose you were ok the way you lay down, as the most comfortable is the best, when i used the .22, that was uncomfortable, so yeah, you are correct in what you did
@mojosmadness2 yeah dude this gun is intended for military application, but for hunting you're looking at downing moose, cape buff, grizz, and elephant from very long ranges with this thing
I gotta admit, Barrett is the Calvin Klein of sniper rifles. They make quality, high caliber guns that are sexy to behold. If there was a playboy for guns, this would be on the cover, hopefully with me on it!
@codawsome Actually it's designed more for target shooters and SWAT. It would need some mods before going out to the sandbox. For instance the wickedly comfortable recoil pad would disintegrate in the first sandstorm.
@snipski0894 He means to someone who isnt in war its delightful!!!!!!in other words its not delightful to a solider but to a citzen it is!!!I for one citzen dont think so!!!
1.75" @ 100 meters is pretty damn good for someone who never gets a chance to practice and has had no training and has never fired this model before and is using a scope that hasn't been zeroed and is attempting a new stance. =P The police sniper that was present was familiar with the rifle and was putting them through the same hole with each shot.
The bolt looks like it woeks very smoothly, and the bullet looks VERY big.
