  • ok so how did Ed Van Halen keep his tuning down or up like he does in summer nights it's obvious he goes down in tuning for the solo. and then back up for the intro and chorus

  • @Sean2592 he has a trans trem on his stripey GL

  • @hughjarrse ok man thank you very much

  • @Sean2592 The TransTrem has stops at certain pitches, so you can lock it in place a third up, whole step down, etc. It is demo'ed very quickly around 2:50 in this video.

  • @zzm00k that's what i was thinking he did i just wan't for sure.Thanks for your help

  • can someone please fill me in on this, on the steinberger zt3, can you play in downtunings? such a drop C?

  • i wonder how many people commenting on this video prefer their guitars to look like a weapon of some kind.

  • A DVD of this pleeeeeeezzzz...

  • BTW, I do own a "ugly" Klein. With regular S-trem, not this one. Most comfortable and best sounding gutiar I've ever owned. Main workhorse. And I do have owned quite a few. I timed my change of a full/all 6 string set the other day, double ball end. In a mere 3 minutes and 40 seconds, I was up and running with everything in tune. Try do that on a guitar with a Floyd Rose trem!

  • Find it funny that ppl here, think you have to 1) buy this "ugly" guitar just to get the Trem system. 2) Can use any other strings than double ball end. Not so my friends. There are more regular - not ugly - Steinbergers out there with this TT system on than this ugly Klein guitar. The most crucial thing about this whammy bar is that you just have to use calibrated double ball end strings. Using a head to use ordinary strings will render TT pretty useless. You can't bend it like that, then.

  • Thanks for sharing this time capsule.

Im not a guitar player but I do appreciate Torn's unique approach and understanding of space and sound in his playing.

ECM would have never gave him a recording contract had he no talent and he is American to boot!

  • Looks like a fuckin jellyfish

  • @ChainsawVsGod "Looks like a fuckin jellyfish" Yeah! and the guitars not much better.... :o)

  • @ChainsawVsGod

It may look weird, but it's ergonomically designed, like holding a woman close to your body, caressing your every curve. Feels a lot better than your average BC rich, I'll bet you that much.

  • ed roman no contesta mensajes ni tiene paypal es un capullo en ese aspecto

  • Ohhh that is absulety amazing! David is a true genius

  • i love the chord at 1:34 XD

  • That's a super neat trem system but its STILL not enough to get me to buy a steinburger.. Especially this one. Talk about HIDEOUS! lol Plus the double ball strings= deal breaker! David Torns has got some sweet chops though!

  • @brandon9271

First of all, this is a Klein guitar, it just has a Steinberger bridge system. Also, who cares if it's hideous? Function over form. If you really don't like the look of it, keep it in the studio. Save your 'Paul for the stage and have fun with the side digging into your ribs, trying in vain to comfortably reach the higher frets, plus breaking your back and so on and so forth

  • @WoWintosh functional I think its a sweet guitar.. but I'd prefer a steinberger style body or maybe a flying V.. This weird, asymmetrical melted lump of cheese body style isn't for me ;) but neither is a Les Paul.. I'm more of an Ibanez RG, JS, or Radius kinda guy :)

  • @brandon9271

    eeewww, Ibanez!

I'm a Charvel/Fender guy, but if I had a Klein Cheesy Melt-o-Matic Deluxe I would play it every day. Damn you, I want one now.

  • The country licks are very reminiscent of Danny gatton. Awesome- I want one!

  • Would be great if someone could enhance this Steinberger idea, if possible, and make one that can use regular length strings, I doubt it would be do-able. But its sweet.

  • @housemandoc23

There is an adapter for the bergers that enables one to use standard strings. Double balls are the way to go though. I've been using mine for 17 years and can barely stand "standard" guitars and strings. Bergers have zero string twist, fantastic tension, and can stay in perfect tune forever.

But, don't be fooled; steinberger "spirit" guitars are trash and just having "Steinberger" written anywhere on them is akin to blasphemy.

  • @wampaku2

I tried a Spirit recently, the small square bodied one. Absolute crap. Ugliest rosewood I've ever seen, terrible pickups, sounded like it was covered by a blanket, no clarity whatsoever, sticky uncomfortable neck, tuners frequently got stuck, it was just crap. I would get one STRICTLY for travel.

  • @WoWintosh yeah i dont know which one you played. the SPIRITS made now-a-days are worse than the musicyo ones, but theyre also $400 bucks or so. any of the steins worth their salt are around $1000 and mine was the best guitar i ever had.

  • the guitarist reminds me of allan holdsworth

similar looking guitar, chord shapes and the volume swells

  • @crazyedd123 I am pretty sure he uses a Steinberger :)

  • Is this the only part where he talks about the Transtrem?

  • I'll have a quick look at the DVD tomorrow and let you know

  • ok thanks!

  • @WeHelpHorses Did you get a chance to look at the DVD?

  • Oops, I used my pc while someone else was signed in to you tube, yeah that's pretty much all he has to say on the trans-trem, assuming your right handed gibson now offer the TT3 on some of their steinberger guitars so they might be worth checking, I have a gl4ta with a lefty TT and it's been murder getting a replacement arm, if you have a PO box I'm happy to send you a copy of the Torn disk

  • Very ugly guitar

  • Hey, Great tremolo system but what the heck does that bent up chord at 1:58 (Exactly 1:58) Remind me of? I've started to think it is something from Vegas Vacation or some scene from a movie where a woman was wearing a coconut bra...? (Sorry, It is driving me up the wall!)

  • steel guitar or slide guitar or somethin like that :P

  • No, It isn't from any songs I've heard. It could have been done with a slide but I'm pretty sure I heard it in a movie.

  • spongebob? xD I´m sry i have no idea

  • I'm sure it can't be that. It wasn't a song, Just a sound effect that was used for one part even though it was on a guitar.

  • david torn and bill frisell. awesome guitarists

  • Has this video ever been issued on DVD? I remember when it came out, it seemed really expensive, something like 50 bucks for two VHS tapes. Anyway, I never got around to getting it, even though Torn is one of my favorite guitarists.

  • Awesome! What guage strings are you using?

  • i still cant find the tt3

  • "i still cant find the tt3"

google Steinberger zt3 and click images, you'll see the new guitar with the tt3 on it

  • @towardstheshadows Search the ZT3, you've probably already seen that though.

  • Amazing. Your playing and the guitar, too. I'm curious, at about 2:00 in you get that perfect tele-like twang. What pickup is that?

    Thank you for posting it!

  • I think David is using Joe Barden pickups, the guitar is a Steinberger/Kiein

  • Thank you very much. For some reason I thought David posted it himself, lol. I'm sorry, and thanks again!

  • anyone know where can get just the bridge

  • "anyone know where can get just the bridge"

They turn up on ebay from time to time, and Steinberger/Gibson have devloped an TT3 that's used on some ne Steinbergers

  • is the tt3 the same thing

  • The TT3 only goes two half steps up and two half steps down, meaning 1 full step and 1 full step down. The TT2s range is 1 1/2 steps up and 3 full steps down so the TT2 is more flexible in that regard.

    Kramer Kommander

  • what the fuck?

  • Politically correct Guatemalan rosewood?

No, but he is a great player.

  • I wish homespun would get off their lazy asses and put this on DVD. And a nice big FU to homespun for siting Copyright Infringement on all the parts of this video that was on here.

  • Comment removed

  • sounds nice buts its the ungliest thing ive ever seen

  • Tripping Over God is one of my favorite CDs. Wish I knew where the hell it was.

    Cool vid. thanks.

  • It;s not any kind of synthesizer guitar, dispite it's unusual looks it's basically a "normal" guitar with magnetic pick ups

  • ive had the ZT3 for 3 days and i already have the TT so fucked up i cant even begin to get it back to factory

  • holy shit! thats amazing!

  • I've got a GL2TA and the trem has been broken for years. I'd love to find a replacement at less than half the price I paid for this guitar. That said, shouldn't the patent be running out soon? Maybe we'll find these made cheaply in china in a few years ;-)

  • I have a lefty GL4TA and hve been trying to get just a replacement arm for over a year (totally differnt to the righty arms) the new TT3 is out now, you can get TT2's from musicyo, and it looks like the Chinese TT3's are comming fairly soon

  • Transtrem 3? Didn't even know. I'll look into it. Thanks!

  • if you type "steinberger zt3" into google the first hit should be a video demo for the new steinberger with tt3

  • Just watched it! Amazing!

  • I wonder if I can fit it on my old one

  • I don't think so, but apart from that you would be knackering a classic guitar, maybe you should consider selling your old guitar and putting some of the money into a new steinie with TT3, I'm not hustling you, I'm lefty ... :o)

  • If you want replacement part for your original transtrem, and if you're in U.S.A . I know a guy who make them by himself from quality metal and he do lot of other kind of stuff for other Tremolo, a kind of tremolo fan hahaha , now i'm in China i don't have his adress in my bookmark but as soon as i come back at home please leave a PM in youtube and i'll send you to him, he will do the job for a good price and maybe it's just a little part he already made in series .

  • No, he's a fucking genius.

  • Ed Roman is a stupid red headed troll. He was an asshole when he owned EastCoast Music Mall in Danbury, CT. and he's an asshole in Las Vegas.

  • I second that! He also lost his store in Vegas, and now has an online store. He even got his guitars booted off of ebay- he was masquerading his Bergers made from various PARTS pieced together as 100% original-NOT! What a crook!

  • hahahahaha hes like the don king of guitars

  • Ha didn't realize Eastcoast Music was owned by him. I seem to recall he was advertising both Ed Roman and Eastcoast Music for an overlapping period. Not sure maybe he was out of Eastcoast music before I saw the Ed Roman web site, originally tagged as being in Fairfield, CT. which is just north of the Danbury Prison. Had been going there on and off, mostly off, for years never had anything I was looking for...

  • @JoeRnCT you have to pay 100 dollar down pament just to go in and you can bring 1 person. fucking douchey red headed troll/leprechaun fuck

  • cool function that trem, too bad the guitar is butt ugly

  • It's actually a totally ergonomically designed guitar, the aesthetics were the last consideration Klein doesn't make them any more, and Lorenzo is in poor health, you couldn't get one for much under $6,000 these days

  • Maybe- but it can do things that your Musicman CANT do!

  • then why aren't ppl using them

  • Klein dosent make them anymore. The Transtrem is still around though. EVH even had some Wolfgangs with TT's installed. Alan Holdsworth has TT's on his Delaps.

  • The TransTrem is one of the best & most versatile trems ever designed! The LOOKS of the guitar its on dosent change that.

  • Because Ed Roman bought up all the NY factory stock and has a monopoly on original Steinberger parts. He wants something like $3000 for a transtrem.. just the trem. So his shop tells me. Nobody else is making transtrems.. so it's either find one second hand or buy from Roman and pay stupid money. Or... if MusicYo ever gets the their long awaited stock shipment, buy a top of the line "USA model" (Assembled in the US from Asian parts) and pilfer the transtrem for use on another guitar.

  • Yeah, ER is a major crook and I think he got what he deserved!(His store going under.) Some of his "original" parts were actually "seconds" or not as promised, so the buyers got stiffed. As for MusicYo, some of their USA line bodies are made in North America. The necks WERE made by Moses Graphite USA. Pickups by EMG or Seymour Duncan, the T and S trems by Zen-On Japan. However, they apparently are using different necks, and wont be using Zen-On much longer.

  • oh thanx so much for this~~ if Jeff Beck weren't around DT would be my #1

  • VH!

  • "VH!"

    Yeah!.. summer nights I beleive

  • that pedal steel stuff was insane!

  • can i have much more

  • Technically that guitar was made by Klein, not Steinberger.

  • Quite correct, but the general guitar playing public would construe it a a Steinberger, the Lorenzo made guitars are also mistaken for Steinbergers, I think for the purposes of youtube a generic "Steinberger" heading is appropriate

  • Also I specifically made the heading "Steinberger Trans-Trem with David Torn" which is exactly right!

  • I agree the heading is appropriate, especially since the important hardware was made by Steinberger, and the rest of the guitar was a short lived Steinberger model. I thought i would mention that Klein made it incase anyone wanted to search for more info on that particular guitar. thanks for posting the clip.

  • Cool. Ever since I heard "Point B" by Michael Hedges I've been wanting to see how this things work...

  • Wonderful, I've never seen how he makes those sounds. Being that this series is *impossible* to find, I would love more too!!

  • I have been waiting years to see video of Torn. Please post more!

  • I'll certainly try, I'm having a bit of a problem with the PAL/NTSC thing, my DVD recorder won't let me copy to disc,

  • dvdshrink?

  • Sorry mate I just realised what you meant (I thought you were someone pushing DVD shrink) the VHS tapes are NSTC when I copied them onto my HD of my DVD recorder everything seemed ok, but when I tried to copy from the HD to a disk it wouldn't let me, so I can't get a disk to put in my laptop to upload (I think that makes sense)

  • oh, sounds like copy protection.

then just a TV in card, like hauppage, to record it.
