Imagine coming on deck just as that wave hits - you open the door and are hit by 46 million tonnes of sea water.

The footage was taken by a scientist inside the ship, looking out the porthole. I was on the deck when the calving began and had to run inside and hold tight. You could definitely feel the ship rock when the big waves hit! Stuff went flying in the ship's labs!

the seawater drained out the sides of the ship. There are portholes all along the side of the ship's deck, but with no glass in them, to allow for water to drain. However, we had a LOT of ice on the deck. Some of the pieces had to be broken up using sledgehammers! Others were thrown overboard. I kept a piece, melted it down, and bottled the water. :)
