@56conn6h Hmm you make a fair point, however, her puffing of cheeks should not influence your opinion on her playing. I agree that you can't hear much melodic integrity and you never really know where she's actually going in her phrases, but many of the greats puff their cheeks. Concentrate on what she sounds like!
@56conn6h Please dont take this as a rude comment, but puffing cheeks shouldn't be a factor in determining if they are a good player or not, look at Dizzy Gillespie for example. ive never seen someones face get so big in my life!! yet to this day he is still one of the best. but other than that, your other arguments are pretty valid :D
The problem with YouTube--ridiculous and unkind comments sometimes. The song is called "Simone" by Frank Foster. John Betsch is a helluva drummer and a nice cat, too. And Sarah Morrow's ideas are her OWN--not J.J. Johnson's. Some folks among the general public still have a lot of growing up to do!!
@ohbopshbam No the problem is this, Sarah Morrow is getting acknowledgment and most of all, WORK, when there are players who have 1000 times the skill level of chops, lines, finess and musicianship who are almost starving. Forget about STYLE, Ms. Morrow is just plain and simple not on the same level as any of 1000 trombonists that SHOULD be playing this gig. That along with the shameless promotion she indulges in just leaves a sour taste in a lot of the pro's mouths.
Okay no offense , but the level of incompetence from this trombonist is embarrassing. I think its a shame that someone can be on this poor of a level for such a high profile gig.
@DaveWollenberg Me!!!! i think she's a good trombone player, but i don't like his playing! she sounds a bit sloppy, i have the same problem and that's the reason why i don't like my playing :) But i'm studying to improve my playing!
@DaveWollenberg Alot of people. The plain fact is that shes just not on the level of other professional players that have made names for themselves in jazz. She plays on a pretty mediocre level. Thats just simply listening.
she did a good job she murdered it actually probably one of the best fem jazz trombonist around & I play the so trust me she killed it

Well, errrrmm yes,,, But does she swing ?

Sorry, Sarah's playing doesn't do much for me. I agree, she is late on the head. She puffs her cheeks and her lines are not distinct or articulate.
Just my opinion.

Morrow has a fine back up band. Ricky Ford and Rhoda Scott are always great and John Betch is a top end drummer.

She's splitting notes all over the shop, and she's so laid back on the head that she's just late. Average.

Reminiscent of Wayne Henderson, Jazz Crusaders in sound and style.

Was she singin' while playin'? How else could Sarah make her 'bone growl like that?

Who on Earth would dislike Sarah's trombone playin'?

Sloppy? Perhaps around 4:29 to 4:45, but otherwise excellent and with great intonation-

4:28 to 4:38 is just rubbish.

@shoegazer666 Agreed, definitely. Was that some failed attempt at multiphonics? I hate multiphonics to begin with. JTS

Great ideas for soloing for Sarah Morrow, sound is a bit sloppy. But nice solo though.
