First of all, the title is misleading. He never says "Hey, take a pill", and he isn't even speaking to her. He's talking about efficiency in health care. The last bit is an example, saying sometimes there are cheaper alternatives to surgeries if they are proven to not always work, which is pretty accurate. There are alot of unnecessary procedures doctors order because the patients will concent. It isn't a "death panel", that's ridiculous. It's just an attempt to optimize how it works.
i thought this was one of the reasons that the libs wanted government run healthcare. they always complain that insurance companies have too much say regarding health care choices! now it will be the government denying care! and i guess republicans were correct in warning about "death panels"! sounds pretty much like that to me!

I have elderly family members two have had multiple heart surgeries, on a huge amount of meds, and one's been in the hospital often for long periods. Hip replacement, knee replacement, infections, chemo, malignant tumors they've had just about everything it seems I asked how much they've had in hospital bills that medicare has paid over the past 20 years. I added up around 9,000,000 dollars. 9,000,000 FRICKIN MILLION DOLLARS for 3 people!

I live in Australia. My grandparents both get the same amount of FREE healthcare as my little sisters. It is no different to the healthcare I get either, and it makes no difference to our budgets each year.
Think about it this way, if your population of almost 310 million people pay only five dollars in taxes each, per year, you make around 1.5 BILLION dollars per year in revenue for hospitals to administer medicine for free! Amazing!

I am a health science major and can tell you that giving a 100 year old women a pacemaker is never any Dr's first choice. It'd would be an extremely difficult procedure for any 100 year old to go through. In situations like this medical evidence may suggest that managing the symptoms is more cost effective and has the same effect on improving quality of life.

First of all, the title is misleading. He never says "Hey, take a pill", and he isn't even speaking to her. He's talking about efficiency in health care. The last bit is an example, saying sometimes there are cheaper alternatives to surgeries if they are proven to not always work, which is pretty accurate. There are alot of unnecessary procedures doctors order because the patients will concent. It isn't a "death panel", that's ridiculous. It's just an attempt to optimize how it works.

I have elderly family members two have had multiple heart surgeries, on a huge amount of meds, and one's been in the hospital often for long periods. Hip replacement, knee replacement, infections, chemo, malignant tumors they've had just about everything it seems I asked how much they've had in hospital bills that medicare has paid over the past 20 years. I added up around 9,000,000 dollars. 9,000,000 FRICKIN MILLION DOLLARS for 3 people!

I live in Australia. My grandparents both get the same amount of FREE healthcare as my little sisters. It is no different to the healthcare I get either, and it makes no difference to our budgets each year.
Think about it this way, if your population of almost 310 million people pay only five dollars in taxes each, per year, you make around 1.5 BILLION dollars per year in revenue for hospitals to administer medicine for free! Amazing!

i have relative who work in nursing homes AND almost all non-possibly-fatal surgeries are always performed.

Anyone who says that he's saying take a pill rather than get life saving surgery is a total idiot. What Obama is advocating here is called Evidence Based Medicine. He said very clearly that if evidence shows that a treatment isn't effective then there is no point in wasting money to perform it. So if evidence shows that giving a 100 year old woman a pace maker doesn't significantly increase quality of life then it's a waste if a pain killer could perhaps have a greater benefit and cheaper one.

I am a health science major and can tell you that giving a 100 year old women a pacemaker is never any Dr's first choice. It'd would be an extremely difficult procedure for any 100 year old to go through. In situations like this medical evidence may suggest that managing the symptoms is more cost effective and has the same effect on improving quality of life.

Come on after 105 years of life, sometimes you can't spend a million dollars to get three more years. I would not even ask and just say life has to end at some point!
